The Arena opened in 1990 under its original name, the Knickerbocker Arena, and was christened by none other than the first performer, Frank Sinatra, on January 30, 1990. In 1997 it was renamed the Pepsi Arena, and ten years later it became the Times Union Center in January 2007. Through the years, the facility has consistently drawn top notch entertainment and sporting events, and nearly 7 million patrons have walked through its doors. It was recently. CENTER TRIVIA WWW.TIMESUNION.COM Frank Sinatra was the first artist to perform in the Times Union Center when he christened the building on January 30, 1990. Bill Cosby was the second performer at the Center after Frank Sinatra. The first sporting event EVER at Times Union Center was an Albany Patroons game on February 4, 1990. The Knickerbocker Arena was officially renamed the Pepsi Arena on January 8, 1997. Two days later, the Albany River Rats played the Worcester Ice Cats for the first event in the newly named arena. It would take 228 Pepsi cans, stacked end to end, to reach the highest point of The Center ceiling. There are 78 different doors leading into and out of The Center, and 19 public telephones. The Center has 674 lighting units and 432 panes of glass of all different sizes in the front atrium. 2,500 tons of structural steel and 30,000 cubic yards of pre-cast concrete were used to build The Center. It takes 8,000 gallons of water to create a 3/4-inch-thick layer of ice used for the hockey playing surface. The center hung scoreboard weighs 8-1/2 tons, which is equal to the size of three adult circus elephants. Our unique curtaining system, installed in 1993, allows The Center capacity to change in minutes from 17,000 to 6,000. (James Goolsby / Times Union) Not too much love from Mr. Barnes : http://blog.timesunion.com/reviews/american-idols-fill-pepsi-arena-with-fans/3/#more-3 SOUL PATROL MEMORIES: ![]() Donna The Idols took on the Pepsi Arena in Albany last night, and from everything I've heard, the crowd loved 'em. Chris Daughtry, who finally got his record deal with 19 Recordings/RCA Records this week, was a big hit. Elliott's mom was on-hand for the event, the first time she's seen the show. But it was Taylor Hicks who dominated the second half of the show with his seven song set that includes, "Livin' for the City," "Hollywood Nights," and "Do I Make You Proud." The Idols arrived in Albany on Monday, and were able to get out and about a bit, enjoying some local restaurants and meeting fans. There was some speculation that Katharine was in town (a poster on the Idol message boards reported actually speaking to her). But apparently, if she was there, she didn't show up at the concert. This leads me to my rant of the day! If Katharine can't sing, and isn't even supposed to be talking, why can't they just bring her out on the stage, let her wave to the crowd and then leave? This would certainly shut up all of these people who are crazy with conspiracy theories. The organizers and PR people are really blowing it big time here. The problem is, these kids are paid per show, and they aren't going to pay her just to show up. She has to sing. All these conspiracy people seem to think that she should be on the road with them anyway, despite not being able to speak. Why would she do that if she isn't getting paid? Again, I'll say it. Katharine will most certainly be back. There's no way she can get out of this contract, and the tour is part of the package. Period. End of discussion. She will return, she will sing, and that's that! courtesy of taylor4Livin' For the City |
