THE WACHOVIA ARENA :

Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza is owned by the Luzerne County Convention Center Authority, a government body appointed by the Luzerne County Commissioners.

The arena is managed by SMG, the world leader in entertainment and sports facilities management.

The arena opened on November 13, 1999 when the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League made their debut.

Originally called the Northeastern Pennsylvania Civic Arena, the facility became First Union Arena at Casey Plaza when First Union bank purchased the naming rights. The name changed to Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza in 2002 after a corporate merger.

The arena’s primary tenants are the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League, affiliated with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers of the af2 Arena Football league.

With over 8,000 permanent seats and a capacity of nearly 10,000 for concerts, the arena has played host to some of the biggest names in entertainment, including Elton John, Cher, Neil Diamond, Janet Jackson, The Eagles, and Simon & Garfunkel.

'Idol' singers label tour amazing,awesome
By Geri Anne Kaikowski

Last year at this time, Taylor Hicks would have been setting up for an acoustic gig during the dining hour at a local restaurant in his home town of Birmingham, Ala., playing covers of Harry Nilsson tunes. "It's been an amazing year," said the 2006 American Idol winner, just four hours before show time when he and his fellow contestants of the hit Fox TV show would perform before a sold-out crowd at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.

The king of the "Soul Patrol" reflected briefly about a year in which he won the coveted Idol title, signed a record deal and was named People magazine's "Sexiest Bachelor." He was one of four American Idols at a special meet-and-greet session at the Wachovia Arena on Tuesday afternoon prior to the show. A limited amount of tickets are still available for the Idols return engagement Sunday, Sept. 24.

While Hicks has a lot of pressure and a lot of offers from his Idol win, he is making the American Idols Live tour his first priority. "You have to really perform the task at hand," he said. "And this is it."

He is putting together an album of original material for his first solo CD on music mogul Clive Davis' label. But Hicks says he is in the collecting phase first as opposed to the writing phase. The Idol does get some inspiration from the road while touring and will occasionally pull out a pen and some paper "when the muses visit every now and then."

Hicks, dressed in a button-down shirt over jeans, downplayed his sex symbol status from the People magazine label. "I was in New York and when I got the phone call and they told me that, I really freaked out," he said, laughing. When asked about the gray locks, Hicks promises he will never dye his hair.

"The gray will stay," he said, gesturing to perhaps the most famous locks of hair in "American Idol" history. Even Hicks can't turn on the TV set without seeing himself on that ubiquitous Ford commercial. But, he isn't letting fame get to his head. "I just want to stay humble and be a musician and writer," he said. During the show, he dedicates his single "Do I Make You Proud?" to the American troops in Iraq. "It was really important for me to do that acknowledgement for their sacrifice," he said. Hicks is happy the Idols tour, unlike the TV show, allows him to be an instrumentalist, too. "The key part for me musically is being able to play the harmonica and guitar," he said. Next year at this time, the American Idol hopes to be on stage performing all original material rather than covers of the Doobie Brothers and Elvis Presley.
