July 27, 2006 Mellon Arena 66 Mario Lemieux Pl Pittsburgh, PA 15219 (412) 642-1800 SEATING CAPACITY: 18,039 ![]() THE MELLON ARENA: ![]() Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena, formerly known as the Civic Arena, was completed and opened on September 19, 1961 at a cost of $22 million. Originally built to house the Civic Light Opera, the Mellon Arena is now home to the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins and a variety of family shows and has hosted such music legends as Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Garth Brooks and The Grateful Dead. The Mellon Arena is famous for its revolutionary architectural design which features the largest retractable dome roof in the world - 170,000 square feet and 2,950 tons of Pittsburgh steel. Despite its size, the dome can open or close in an amazing two minutes! Rock legend Alice Cooper brought his 1971 "Killer" tour to the Civic Arena on December 27th, 1971. The concert spectacle set a new record attendance of 14,400 and grossed $91,000. On December 31, 1976, Elvis Presley performed at the Civic Arena; it would be his last New Year's Eve, as he died eight months later. English rock band Led Zeppelin performed at the venue three times: once in 1970 and twice during its 1975 tour. On March 25, 1995, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page attracted a record attendance of 17,764 at the arena until January 30, 1999 when 18,150 fans packed the arena for a WWF house show. Genesis performed at Mellon Arena on September 9, 2007; as part of their reunion tour: Turn It On Again: The Tour; which was the first tour for Genesis since 1992 and included Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Michael Rutherford with their touring members Chester Thompson and Darryl Steurmer. The arena has previously hosted NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament games, six Atlantic Ten Conference men's basketball tournaments (1978–1983), and, until the construction of the Petersen Events Center, was the alternate home court of the University of Pittsburgh men's basketball team. From its inception, it has been an alternate home court for the Duquesne University men's basketball team and was the team's primary home from 1965 to 1988. Since November 2005, the Pittsburgh Xplosion basketball team has played at both arenas. Mellon Arena's roof has rarely been opened in recent years. The arena was the setting for the 1995 Jean Claude Van Damme action film Sudden Death, which was set during a fictional Game 7 Stanley Cup Final, and the climax featured the roof being opened during the game (surprisingly, without the fans noticing). The roof also was opened during a performance of area high school chourus groups (called "The Night Of 1000 Stars") during the climax of "Ode To Joy" as fireworks were set off above the darkened arena, and was opened again during part of ArenaBowl I, marking the only time in AFL history that a game was played in an open-air environment. Another movie filmed at Mellon Arena was the 1979 basketball movie, The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh. In addition, it was used to film the movie Best in Show for both interior and exterior shots, though the movie was supposed to be in Philadelphia. Also on March, 28, 2008, during a game against the Islanders, several shots were filmed for the Dreamworks SKG studio film “She’s Out of My League.” SETLIST: "Jailhouse Rock" (Entrance) ( Elvis Presley ) "Hollywood Nights" ( Bob Seager ) "Livin' For The City" ( Stevie Wonder ) "Do I Make You Proud" "Takin' It To The Streets" (Encore) ( Doobie Brothers MEDIA AND REVIEWS: SOUL PATROL MEMORIES: courtesy of moliebaby201. molliebaby20 finally, taylor came down the line and we got stuff signed by him and my friend alyssa almost died because he's her absolute favorite person on the planet. she started crying and he just looked at her like she was crazy and he was like "what ya crying for?" and she was like "you're taylor hicks!!!! omg!!!" and he just laughed and rubber her shoulder and she almost had a heart attack. so we both got our arms rubber by our favorite idols and nearly died. but oh man was it good 2. .AnthonyFan16 Then, the crowd went crazy as Taylor made his grand entrence on one of the sides of the arena, and it was crazy. Made his way down and sang the rest of his first song............afterwards, he sang Takin’ It To The Street. After that, sang Do I Make You Proud and dedicated it to the troops and that was sweet You know, after seeing Taylor live, I've grown to love him more than I ever have. As usual, he sang and did his dancing and one point, during one of the songs, pulled out the harmonica and wow............ AMAZING job on that. Then, he left the stage...... And came back...... courtesy of molliebaby203. Devoted2AJs TAYLOR finally came out, and as he was walking over, he saw and pointed to my SOUL PATROL sign. When he got over to us I, again, started crying. I asked for a picture, and he reacher over and put his arms around me, the whole time telling me "Don't cry, don't cry! You're gonna make me cry!". I then went to take a picture of him and my sister, and I was like "I'm not tall enough" (my hands shaking terribly). So for their whole picture, too, he was saying to me "It's okay! It's okay!". He was really a sweet guy, and I am at a loss as to why earlier reviews mark him to be cold and distant. The guy with him kept saying "Taylor, we need to go NOW!" But Taylor turned to him and said "I still have to get the other half of the fence first." He then signed at the speed of light anyone elses stuff that they wanted autographs. TAYLOR then came out, in the middle of the crowd in the back. I ran to the front row in front of the steps and I was the last to have grabbed his hand. I got it on video too. His set.. WOW. Just like I'd imagined it. Full of energy. Everyone around me was dancing like crazy. I don't even know where the moves were coming from. Hah, it was a really fun couple of songs, and when he grabbed the harmonica.. I think everyone went crazy. Then at one point he had the harmonica going while also using the tamborine, and dancing. It was awesome. Completely the definition of American Idol. |
