Verizon Center hosts about 200 events each year, including concerts, family entertainment and athletic games by the NHL's Washington Capitals, the NBA's Washington Wizards, the WNBA's Washington Mystics and the Georgetown Hoyas Men's Basketball Team.
The arena opened as the MCI Center on December 2, 1997 in downtown Washington's Chinatown. When Verizon bought out MCI in 2006, the arena's name was changed accordingly. The building replaced the US Air Arena, which was located on the Capital Beltway in Landover, Maryland. Some complained that the building's construction, by closing off a block of G St, corrupted the historic L'Enfant layout of the Washington city streets.

Others were concerned it would lead to the displacement of Chinese businesses in Chinatown. While largely considered a commercial success, the Verizon Center was the catalyst that led to gentrification of Washington's Chinatown, with rent increases after construction of the Arena forcing many small Chinese businesses to close. On the other hand, the Arena is not only a popular venue for sports and concerts, but helped to turned "Gallery Place/Chinatown" neighborhood into one of the prime sites for commercial development in Washington. Virtually all Chinese residents in the D.C. area already live in the suburbs, and displacement that occurred over the years has been mostly commercial rather than residential.

From Nick R.
It feels a little like a high school gym to me sometimes, not the urban professional sport stadium I think it should feel like, that being said I LOVE that it is downtown, I LOVE that it is surrounded by bars, I LOVE that its metro accessible, and I LOVE that I can walk there. If you do a little searching, you can usually find free street parking, maybe a little far away, but its still free. I've sat in every section except for 100 (so the 200's, the boxes, and 400s) any have always been very happy with my view, especially from the front row of the 400s. I've only ever been to basket ball games, though I am looking forward to seeing a concert and a hockey game here.

ps. the Green Turtle ( sports bar and grill ) in the same building is a HUGE plus for this place.

'American Idol' finalists headed to the White House

1. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — President Bush is about to come face-to-face with the one man who has his voting record beat.
Bush plans to host American Idol Taylor Hicks and the other Top 10 finalists next Friday in the Oval Office. It will be the first time contestants from the hit television show have been invited to meet the president.

Hicks won the most recent season's contest May 24 after 63 million votes were cast for him in the season finale. That's more than the 59 million that Bush got in 2004, a record in any U.S. presidential election. Although, to be fair, voters can cast more than one ballot on American Idol.

The White House announced the Idols' upcoming visit Friday as Bush traveled to Colorado for a Republican fundraiser.

The meeting is scheduled for July 28, when the performers were scheduled to be in Washington for their American Idols Live show at the Verizon Center. Hicks has a personal connection inside the White House: Susan Whitson, Laura Bush's press secretary, taught him 9th grade English at Hoover High School in Birmingham, Ala.

The finalists will get a tour of the White House before their audience with the president. It was unclear if runner-up Katharine McPhee would be among the group since she missed recent tour stops due to bronchitis and laryngitis.

2.
American Idol" contestant Elliott Yamin almost missed U.S. President George Bush's White House meeting with the TV show's finalists, claiming he overslept.
"I had press to do this morning," Yamin said, the New York Post reported. "My sleep was interrupted, and I was trying to make up for it. The tour manager called me at the last minute (Friday) and said, 'We'll have a taxi to take you there for the photo.' And that's what I did."

People.com said Yamin showed up sprinting to the Oval Office about five minutes after nine other "Idol"...

SOUL PATROL MEMORIES:

This date marked the first appearance of Katherine McPhee for the tour as she was recuperating from an illness.
