OPENING ACT: The Greyhounds

Concert goers may be dancing in the aisles as The Greyhounds open for Taylor in eight venues throughout the South—Jacksonville, Tampa, Myrtle Beach, Knoxville, Asheville, Nashville, Atlanta, and New Orleans.

“As tight breakdowns and relentless vibes ricochet off the walls, both wallflowers’ and groove connoisseurs alike will find themselves heading towards the floor to get their boogie on,” according to Intrepid Artists International website.

Intrepid describes a “presence that goes far beyond mere musicianship”:

“Greyhounds are turning heads by combining raw grooves and fresh melodies with elements of classic funk, oldschool blues, and straightup soul. Not just your average funk band, Greyhounds infuse some much needed levity into the proceedings with a dynamic presence that goes far beyond mere musicianship. They enjoy what they’re doing, and it’s more than evident in their highly energetic shows.” More energy!

The Greyhounds have the same passion for touring as Taylor. From Intrepid:

“Greyhounds have performed in 45 US states, across the border in Canada, and had 223 dates under their belt in 2002. Their dedication to touring is respected and envied by their peers and their fans. Greyhounds have appeared at: the prestigious High Sierra Music Festival, East Texas Blues Festival, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, SXSW Music Conference, 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games, and hundreds of the nations finest venues including: Tipitina’s (NOLA), Knitting Factory (NY and LA), Gypsy Tea Room (Dallas), Fox Theater (Boulder), Work Play Theater (Birmingham), Boom Boom Room (San Fran), Roxy Theatre (Atlanta), Zephyr (Salt Lake), and Numbers (Houston).

“Originally formed in L.A., Greyhounds hit the road in 2000 and began building quite a reputation for themselves as road dogs, no pun intended….”

Taylor Hicks Excited About Chris Daughtry's Success, 'Obscure Covers''Idol' winner kicks off tour February 21, drops 'official' single.By Corey Moss
Views 311

Here's something you probably never thought you'd hear from an "American Idol" winner: "I'm learning a bunch of obscure covers, and I'm having a blast."

Yes, eight months after he was crowned, Taylor Hicks is still a breath of fresh air to the franchise that has focused on, well, not-so-obscure covers. And, while Chris Daughtry is the one dominating the albums chart (see ), Hicks is slowly making his move.

Although he'd previously called dance-floor-friendly "The Runaround" his first single (see "Taylor Hicks Hopes 'Traveling Circus Of Fans' Follows Him On Tour"), Hicks is now releasing the ballad "Just to Feel That Way" as what his record label is calling the first "official" single.

"Usually you have the single and then the album, but we did it the opposite way and that allowed it to get out there to the fans, who could say what they thought the best song was," Hicks explained. "And that's really cool."

Taylor didn't write the song (that'd be Jess Cates, Emanuel Kiriakou and Lindy Robbins, who have penned tunes for Clay Aiken and Nick Lachey), but he felt immediately that it fit him. "The song is about taking your chance with that particular someone," Hicks said. "You have to travel down that road with someone to get to the promised land, so to speak. The lyrics are what gravitated me to the song, and the melody is wonderful."

A video for "Just to Feel That Way" is in the early stages, but Taylor couldn't confirm any details.

Meanwhile, his first tour begins February 21 in Jacksonville, Florida, and wraps up April 27 in Kansas City, Missouri. "I'm gonna have an eight-piece soul band on the road with me," Hicks said giddily. "I've handpicked all the players. Touring is in my blood, and I'm excited about the music I'm gonna perform."

Taylor is keeping those obscure covers under wraps but said fans can expect songs from all three of his solo albums, as well as some of their favorites from his run on "Idol." "It's gonna be loose," he said of the set list. "I've been the same performer regionally for 10 years, and now I'm that same performer nationally."

Also in the pipeline is Hicks' book, "Heartful of Soul," due this spring. The book will chronicle Taylor's struggles as a touring performer before "Idol" and include some juicy details from the show.

Hicks hasn't seen a lot of his fellow finalists since their tour wrapped, but he just caught up with Daughtry in Los Angeles. "I'm excited about Chris," Taylor said. "He's a good songwriter. I think it shows that there are artists within the contest."

Hicks hits the road

By DAN MACDONALD, The Times-Union

American Idol provided the launching pad. It's now up to Taylor Hicks to become a star.

Fueled by his Soul Patrol, the season five American Idol winner's solo career blasted off before a packed Florida Theatre crowd. Hicks' fans, many of them with hair just as gray as his but about 15 to 20 years older, stood and cheered throughout the 75-minute show Wednesday night.

Hicks is known as a blue-eye soul singer. He's unashamed of his love for the music. It is this genuine quality that makes his performance endearing and entertaining. Without a major hit to speak of, Hicks enthralled the crowd as if this was his 1,000th major solo performance, not his first.

Dressed in blue jeans, a black sport coat and an untucked, collared shirt, Hicks was totally at ease. He was a performer, not some contest winner. On this night these people invested more than a couple phone calls to vote for Hicks. This time they spent real money to buy tickets. He answered the call.

On stage, Hicks is in constant motion. At times he dances like the awkward guy at the party who doesn't know his moves are lame. Then he becomes overcome with the grinding and spastic gyrations of a young Joe Cocker only to become possessed like a tent preacher full of the holy spirit. Dancing like this could easily be mocked, but they work for Hicks because he is all about the music.

He rarely strayed from his R&B roots. He set the mood with Soul Thing from his self-titled album. Later, Hell of a Day, which he said was "an original from my second album" (as if casual fans knew there was such an album), had an uptempo Van Morrison feel. Hicks strapped on a guitar, but it served more as a prop rather than as a tool to help out his seven-member band.

The Soul Patrol stood until he sang the latest single, Just Feel That Way midway through the set. The song took Hicks and his fans out of the comfortable R&B pocket and pushed him into the vocal contortions that AI judges Randy, Paula and Simon drool over. It didn't play to this crowd and Hicks knew it. He quickly got back into his groove with a little help from Rod Stewart's Young Turks and The Doobie Brothers' Takin' It to the Street.

Knowing when he has good thing going, he relied on the Doobie Brothers again for a rousing version of Without Love for his encore.

Hicks will always carry that American Idol baggage -- for better or worse -- but of all the winners, he may be the performer who stays true to his own musical muse. Hicks sings from his soul.

I attended his first concert in Jacksonville and I had a blast. I drug my kids (in their mid to late 20's) with me and even they had a good time. My son, even gave it a rousing "it was fine"...considering they were both embarrassed to say they were going to an American Idol concert, that's high praise. He even clapped at some of the songs, especially when Taylor played the harmonica. This was entertainment pure and simple. The Greyhouds who opened for him were awesome, too. Well worth the bucks I spend for a great night of music. If there are tickets left in your area - go!
