One could measure it by the fact that Hick's grandmother, Joni Hicks of Gulf Shores, was greeted with an ovation as she made her way to her front-row-center seat Tuesday night at the Mobile Civic Center Theater. Or by the procession of dozens of fans making their way down the aisles of the venue to pose with her for photos. Or one could measure it by the fact that when Hicks made the routine mid-show announcement that CDs and other merchandise were available in the lobby, a significant portion of the capacity audience actually cheered. By any measure, the enthusiasm was off the charts. Many an artist with more critical acclaim struggles to generate as much fervor in an audience. Hicks has drawn his share of criticism since Fox's "American Idol" launched him to national stardom, in particular for his herky-jerky dancing and for a soul-music affinity that strikes some as derivative. Still, millions voted for him in the televised talent program. And as he performed Tuesday, it was easy to see why: The man seems to have found a way to bottle exuberance. If his stage moves lack the fluid grace of a Mick Jagger or a David Bowie, they somehow seem to convey passion bursting out of an average Joe. And that in turn seems to connect with fans looking to bond with a kindred soul rather than an aloof superstar. The show, part of a theater tour promoting his self-titled debut album, was his first appearance in Mobile since winning the fifth season of "Idol" in May 2006. Before entering the contest, the Birmingham native regularly appeared at clubs and restaurants in the area. He didn't comment directly on his rise in status during the first part of the show, limiting himself to brief comments such as "Hey, Mobile" and "This place is special to me." But in the music, he let himself go. The staging was minimal and the sound quality was no better than average, but on sheer personal energy Hicks kept many of his 1,900-plus listeners on their feet throughout. Highlights included the night's second song, a lavishly extended take on "Heaven Knows," one of the songs from the album he released last fall. The far-ranging tune took Hicks from bright, sunny passages to choruses driven by a powerful, insistent push from the bass, which often was the loudest instrument in a loud band. A few songs later, Hicks showed his eight-piece ensemble could rock even harder, with a song he said the group had learned just for the occasion: A credible cover of The Who's "Going Mobile." In between, Hicks mixed things up, working in ballads such as "Dream Myself Awake," a song written for him by Matchbox 20 vocalist Rob Thomas. He followed "Going Mobile" with "Just to Feel That Way," another song from the album. Interestingly, he referred to it as his "first single." Actually, Hicks' first charting single was "Do I Make You Proud." That was a song he sang during "Idol," but which was widely criticized for its blandness. It was not included on his subsequent disc. More to the point, perhaps, was the way Hicks delivered "Just to Feel That Way": face anguished, body straining, at times standing on tiptoes on the edge of the stage. For an audience of avid fans who indeed just wanted to feel that way, Hicks was just the man to take them there. Source: The Mobile Register Date Published: February 28, 2007 ------------------------------------------------- fox10tv.com Feb 28th 07 MOBILE - It was a steamy night last summer when Taylor Hicks performed before a packed house at the WorkPlay Complex in Birmingham. That was a big show in a small, more intimate venue. The way his family says he likes it. It should be similar to what "Soul Patrollers" will see in Mobile Tuesday night. Tickets for that show sold out in less than two hours over the holidays. In August, while Taylor was still on the American Idol tour circuit, he took a few moments to speak with Fox10. During that interview Taylor talked about his success on Season 5 of FOX's hit TV show, American Idol. He also talked about his close connections to the Gulf Coast. "Ten years on the road. Ten years at the Flora-Bama, you know? And now it's come to this. It's just amazing you know. It's an amazing journey," Hicks said. It's an amazing journey that's far from over. Fans flocked by the thousands on Idol's May finale night to watch him win. Now basically a star herself, his grandmother Joni Hicks of Gulf Shores, had a lot to celebrate that night. "She really didn't have any idea of where it was going to go," Taylor said in August. She apparently also had a lot of influence on Alabama's "Soul Man". "She's a marketing guru. Still is. That's helped. I've learned a lot from her," Taylor added. Now he'll have the chance to teach her something as Taylor shows Joni and the rest of his Gulf Coast fans why he is an American Idol. Doors at the Mobile Civic Center Theatre will open Tuesday night at 7. The "Grassroots" will play from the 8-8:30. Taylor should take the stage around 9. By Phantom from Seattle, WA on 3/2/2007 Pros: Crowd Was In To It, Engaging Stage Presence, Great Encores, Perfect Set List Best For: Everyone I saw the Taylor Hicks tour in Jacksonville, FL and Mobile, AL. It was so good that I've bought tickets to several more shows in the NW. Whether or not you liked Hicks on Idol, or even watched it, I'd recommend this show. A non-Idol-watching friend who went with me agreed with my assessment -- this guy is the best live performer we've ever seen. I really like that he doesn't just sing a song "straight" but often improvs in the middle of it. For example, while singing "Hell of a Day" he sidetracked into "Tupelo Honey" and later he did an intriguing bit with "Night Shift" that had the crowd going crazy. He was very engaging with the audience and there was a lot of call-and-response during the show. The crowd was on its feet the entire time. Nice mix of classic rock and ballads. His voice was terrific, but his stage presence is really out of this world. Do yourself a favor and see this performer in person. You'll be very surprised! courtesy of MSSoulPatrol2. The man has unbelievable energy and musicianship. His vocals are spot on and his chemistry with his band is amazing. He is the best entertainer I have seen in many years. He owns the stage and leaves the audience wanting more after 90 minutes of nonstop growling, prowling, and harp-playing. When he slows it down to sing with just a guitar accompanying him, he takes the audience to an entirely new level. He is truly a joy to see. posted by steaminginbama courtesy of MSSoulPatrolJust To Feel That Way : credit to Kris10's Harmonica solo : credit to Kris10 |
