Yes, we lived our little drama
We kissed on the dunes so white

OPENING ACT: The Wayne Mills Band

THE WAYNE MILLS BAND BRINGS ATTITUDE!

“Yes. They have an attitude. Yes. They have legions of fans. Yes. They are breaking attendance records all over the Southeast. Yes. They are good-looking, young, talented, and – Did we mention? – They have an attitude plus personality, wit and charm. It’s all good.”

"I know I can’t be an original outlaw of the 70’s no matter how much I would have liked to have been; but if I have to go against the grain to make it happen for Wayne Mills Band, then that's just the way it'll have to be. As far as I’m concerned, we are making it happen because we’ve got the greatest fans in the world who come to our shows and buy our music. As long as we’ve got that and a roof over our head, I figure we're doin' just fine." –Wayne Mills

”The Wayne Mills Band has started what seems to be the first sign of a southern music uprising since the days of outlaw country and southern rock bands such as Charlie Daniels, Waylon Jennings, the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd... Wayne’s original music relates to their loyal followers because it is about life in the south. The Wayne Mills Band draws their strength from thousands of devoted fans that sing along to every word of their original music.”

The Band was originally formed on the University of Campus of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. They have toured extensively throughout the South and have opened for Charlie Daniels, Marty Stuart, Willie Nelson, Montgomery-Gentry and many other established country music artists.

With attitude, personality, wit, and charm, these self-proclaimed “outlaws” known as the Wayne Mills Band open for Taylor in Huntsville on March 6.

Hicks Review
By Chris Welch

A sellout crowd of 2,100 fans came out to the Von Braun Center’s Concert Hall Tuesday night to see if the Birmingham singer they pulled and voted for in last year’s "American Idol" was just as fun and entertaining in person as he was on television.

Taylor Hicks didn’t disappoint the Soul Patrol ... or anybody else in the house.

Hicks took the stage in a sports jacket and jeans to a loud standing ovation and many in the crowd - including everything from 10-year-olds wearing "Chicks for Hicks" T-shirts to old ladies with walkers - never sat down. Hicks sang, danced, played a little guitar, blew on his harmonica and never stopped moving during his nearly 90-minute soul/blues/R&B/rock set.

He was a little James Brown, Joe Cocker and Taylor Hicks all thrown into one - often goofy-looking-but-still-entertaining - singing, dancing machine.

"Hey there Huntsville," Hicks said, trying to shout over the loud ovation. "Thanks for voting for me."

The 30-year-old who some call Gray Charles for his salt-and-pepper hair opened with "Soul Thing" and performed other songs from his Dec. 12 debut album, including "Heaven Knows," "The Maze" and the Marvin Gaye tune, "Wherever I Lay My Hat," where he dropped in a few lyrics from the Commodores’ "Night Shift" and Sam Cooke’s "Chain Gang. He performed the first single from his debut, "Just to Feel That Way," and then picked up his guitar for the first time for "Heart and Soul."

Hicks was good up to that point, but he threw it into another gear - and might have thrown out his hips in the process - when he launched into "Compared to What" and went into full "Idol" mode. It was the classic Taylor we all know and loved from the show, the dancing fool that irritated Simon Cowell and won over the hearts of all us dance-challenged folks.

He continued with Rob Thomas’ "Dream Myself Awake," Rod Stewart’s "Young Turks," Bryan Adams’ "The Right Place" and pulled out his harmonica for "The Runaround." Other highlights included "The Deal" and "Hold Onto Your Love."

He returned for an encore and sang "Long Train Running" with Wayne Mills of the Wayne Mills Band from Arab, who opened the show. Some might have wondered about getting a country band to open for a soul/blues guy, but that became apparent in the encore when Hicks invited Mills on stage. "I’ve known Wayne Mills since I was 17," Hicks said. "I remember going to a bar in Tuscaloosa and he let me play my harmonica."

Some might have hoped for "Dance to the Music" and/or "I Want to Take You Higher" in the encore, but nobody seemed to complain when Hicks exited.

"I thought it was great," said Bonita Houser, who won tickets from Go: Your good Times magazine and took her daughter, Lyndsie. Did her daughter have fun? "What do you think?" Houser said, watching her daughter enjoy the show.

Christy Lee Worsham also enjoyed the show with her husband Ben and got to meet Hicks before the show. Worsham gained national attention when People published an article last year that said Worsham was Hicks’ first crush when he lived briefly in Huntsville.

Taylor Hicks works up a sweat in Huntsville performance
By Mary Colurso

Two major sweat stains made an appearance Tuesday night during Taylor Hicks' show at the Von Braun Center Concert Hall in Huntsville.

But that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's seen Hicks perform live in bars and nightclubs around Birmingham. His energy level always has been high, turning shirts into sticky puddles and causing suit jackets to cling to his back and shoulders.

Even as an unknown, Hicks was a real showman -- dancing those crazy-leg steps, playing the harmonica, banging a tambourine against his chest and singing with passion. Earnest facial contortions? Check. Herky-jerky bounce? Check. Head-bobbing goose walk? Also check.

Charismatic body language is partly why Hicks, 30, won on "American Idol" last year, spazz-dancing and soul-dipping his way to the TV crown and a contract with Arista Records.

Now, on his national solo tour, Hicks has amped it up a notch and is performing with even wilder abandon. No wonder he was perspiring like a sprinkler during his 9 p.m. concert at the Von Braun Center.

Hicks' 80-minute set with a seven-member band was entertaining from start to finish, from the first notes of "Soul Thing" to the final licks of "Call Me the Breeze." Even when the sound mix lacked subtlety -- as it often did -- or his voice lacked oomph, Hicks compensated by relying on the other gifts at his disposal.

They are many: they are visual; they are emotional. They prompted adrenaline-fueled applause from ticketholders in the sold-out house of about 2,150 people. Hicks lived in Huntsville briefly during his youth, and he was welcomed back to the Rocket City as a hometown hero.

Chances are, the response will be even greater in Birmingham this weekend, when Hicks does two shows at the 2,176-seat Alabama Theatre. These, too, are sold out, and have been for several weeks.

Hicks, a Hoover native, says crowds here will get special treatment at the Saturday and Sunday concerts, from his decision to structure the dates as "evenings with" (translation: no opening act) to extra songs he'll inject into the set list.

Hicks wouldn't list the additional tunes, saying he wanted to keep the surprise factor high. "Sweet Home Alabama"? Maybe, but don't count on it. During a Feb. 27 concert in Mobile, Hicks stayed away from the Lynyrd Skynyrd anthem and opted for a cover of the Who's "Going Mobile."

Although Elton John's "Rocket Man" might have been appropriate for Huntsville, Hicks mostly stuck to the music he's been performing in other cities on the tour.

Tuesday's set list was heavy on tracks from his self-titled debut disc for Arista, including "The Runaround," "The Right Place," "Gonna Move," "Heaven Knows," "Give Me Tonight," "Dream Myself Awake," "The Deal," "The Maze," "Wherever I Lay My Hat" and "Just to Feel That Way."

A cup of hot tea at Hicks' feet got kicked over early in the show, before he could drink it. Still, a little TLC wouldn't hurt. A careful listener couldn't help but notice a few rough spots, a few bum notes and a few moments when Hicks seemed to lack the necessary windpower.

Frankly, this wasn't the best singing Hicks has done in recent memory, although he obviously gave it his all.

With a rasp and a wink, Hicks covered Rod Stewart's "Young Turks." Here and there, he engaged in mini-medleys, blending his own material with blues-funk-soul classics. "Wherever I Lay My Hat," for example, morphed into snippets of "Night Shift" and "Chain Gang." "The Maze" was combined with "Let's Get it On."

Hicks' band (which includes Birmingham's Brian Less on organ) seems tight enough, after just a few weeks together on tour. On Tuesday, they formed a calm backdrop to Hicks' whirling dervish, which probably was a good thing. It wouldn't do to have eight crazies on stage, competing for the crowd's attention.

One technical issue at the Huntsville show as hard to ignore: Sound controls appeared to be on a universal "let's blare" setting. Except for solos, it was difficult to distinguish the separate instruments, and that was a bit disheartening. A loud band isn't necessarily bad, but let's have more modulation, please.

WHNT.com Extra: Interview with Taylor Hicks
Taylor Hicks

NewsChannel 19 Sits Down With Taylor Hicks

So the interview started out o.k. until I saw Taylor Hicks' shoes. I almost freaked.

I said, "Where are your boots?" Taylor said, "These are stage shoes now," referring to his pair of black New Balance tennis shoes. I said, "No, you were supposed to wear your boots!"

Taylor, being the Southern born-and-raised gentleman that he is, immediately changed into some green crocodile boots.

"Is that better?" he asked.

Well, I didn't want to disappoint you, the viewers, who know Taylor for wearing cowboy boots. He says he believes he has about 10 pairs now.

"It's getting on up there," said Taylor. "I guess the more shows I do, the more singing I do, the more I get to buy boots."

Taylor spent some of his childhood years growing up here in Huntsville.

"I went to Whitesburg Elementary School and lived here in Huntsville and loved it," said Hicks. "I just remember it snowing a few times."

Huntsville can take a little credit for the "Soul Patrol."

"I remember being some kind of singer in some kind of glee club at Whitesburg," said Taylor. "Kind of the beginnings of the singing career."

For now, though, Alabama is not home for Taylor.

"Right now, I live on my tour bus," he said. "I have no return address right now. As a musician that's a good thing, to be a working musician, to be in demand and have the phone ring is a good thing. So I don't know when I'm gonna settle down, but hopefully soon."

Taylor Hicks is known for his spunk and soulfulness, so what can you expect at his concerts?

"A lot of it is very muscial. I've been doing this since I was about 18," he said. "I know how to direct a band and I know how to entertain people," said Taylor. "I think it's a musical show and it's very close to high-impact aerobics," he said with a chuckle.

"Really, you? High impact aerobics?" Amber asked.

"Yea," he replied. "The Soul Patrol does high-impact aerobics when they go to concerts. That's what it's like."

And there's one more thing.

"Amber said, "Can we get a woo-hoo? Taylor said, "Woo-hoo! Good stuff!"

What's next for the Silver Fox?

He has a book coming out in July called Heart Full of Soul. He says there will lots of juicy gossip in it. "Like if you have a girlfriend?" we asked.

He said nope, no girlfriend.

Taylor Hicks is Amazing! This concert was electrifying!!!! He has so much energy, he can't be stopped, and it is contagious. He starts one song, and then flows into another and another. His band is following him as he goes on a musical trip, which is different every night, like a huge jam session. What a joy to experience!!! No wonder he captivated the voters on American Idol. You must experience him LIVE! Incredible!

4. Faith

Taylor really knows how to command the stage and keep the attention of the audience. Seeing him live is the best way to experience Taylor Hicks.
He put a lot of himself in the cd but it just can't convey the level of powerful emotion. Plus he is more than a singer, he is a performer and you just can't take you eyes off him ( and the band ) as you never know what is coming
