The Tabernacle in Atlanta is the former Luckie Street Church and, during the 1996 Olympics, The House of Blues. When House of Blues left town, the venue stood empty for a while until it was taken over by Concert Southern. When full, the place is an amazing venue to see a band.
The experience of a concert at The Tabernacle is unrivaled. This historical landmark is Atlanta's must see entertainment complex. Comparable to a great palace, the walls and ceiling are as colorful as the works of art that adorn them. Guests of The Tabernacle are first greeted by the "Preachers of Rock and Roll," an extensive collection of black and white photography taken of the most seminal musical artists of the twentieth century.

The Tabernacle, an old Baptist Church, is considered “one of Atlanta's historical landmarks. This outstanding venue is greeted by some of the biggest names on the music charts. Just a few of the many artists that graced the stage were Lenny Kravitz, The Smashing Pumkins, and Stone Temple Pilots. The Tabernacle has been acknowledged as the best concert venue by rock magazine Rolling stone.“

Taylor and the Tour Band takes us to church in Atlanta at the Tabernacle on March 9.

“Just steps from Centennial Olympic Park and downtown hotels, this former Baptist church isn't much to behold from the street, but the interior is a marvel of architectural restoration. Constructed in 1911, the building features three levels of seating facing the stage, plus numerous lounges, billiards areas, bars and secluded alcoves. The facility hosts a full schedule of top-flight entertainment throughout the year and is a spectacular place to enjoy a concert. A more intimate venue is located below in the aptly named Cellar, where smaller acts are booked.”

REVIEWS:

Taylor at the Tabernacle
By Rodney Ho
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I got a few seconds with Taylor at a meet and greet a couple hours before the concert. My editors wanted me to ask Taylor about the male “Idol” contestants this year and he told me truthfully he hasn’t had a chance to follow the show closely enough to provide an opinion because, well, he’s been on tour. He said he wishes he had time to sit back at 8 p.m. and watch but he’s working 15 hours a day.

He also complained of the air inside the Tabernacle. (Indeed, I felt something, too, and got a bottle of water.) His road manager Tim said he has worked with the likes of the Wallflowers, Moby and Macy Gray. Mentioning those three acts in a row feels so… 1999!

The opening act is up right now, some bluesy group appropriately named the Greyhounds. It’s a packed house. The audience is mostly in their 30s to 50s and a few are quite a bit older than that. There are far more women than men, probably a two-to-one ratio. There are also a few really young kids here, reflecting the broad demos of “American Idol.” The meet and greet crowd earlier was almost exclusively women in their 30s and 40s. Mike S. just introduced himself to me! (He recognized the guy with the laptop blogging of course…)

UPDATE:

I’m at the office, 30 minutes removed from the concert. It was classic, uncompromised Taylor Hicks. Vocally, he wasn’t 100% (as noted earlier during the meet and greet), struggling a bit through songs like his single “Just To Feel That Way.” But he gutted it out and the crowd appreciated him as much as he appreciated them. “Thank you for voting for me,” he said, in his one acknowledgment of “Idol.” And he yelped out “Soul Patrol” several times, referencing his fan base.

Dressed in signature jeans and sneakers, plus a slate jacket over a simple off-black shirt that played off his grey hair, Hicks twirled about, leaped and danced in timeless Taylorized fashion, playing off the energy of a seven-piece backup band which included two keyboard players and a sax player.

Part of the reason why he’s not pulling in Daughtry-level sales is the fact he’s happily stuck in the 1970s. There’s no real place for his old-soul music on contemporary radio.

In fact, listening to his tunes, you’d think music stopped in 1980. His covers included a tribute to Marvin Gaye (“Let’s Get It On” and the Commodores’ “Nightshift”) and Supertramp’s 1979 hit “Goodbye Stranger.”

About three-quarters through, while Hicks was going through an extended bluesy instrumental portion, some of the older audience members snuck out, possibly more used to seeing him sing two-minute truncated versions of Elvis Presley and the Doobie Brothers.

One bonus: he did not sing the “Idol” victory song “Did I Make You Proud?” Rather, he ended with “Georgia On My Mind,” a slightly more mainstream, upbeat version than he did at Smith’s Olde Bar last fall.

Ultimately, HIcks has clearly opted on the side of his musical integrity and identity versus trying to being something he’s not. And if that doesn’t make him RCA Records’ best bud, he’ll earn his keep touring for the next 40 years long after other “Idol” winners have fully faded into obscurity.

I’m looking forward to hearing your review, Mike S!
