Taylor Hicks toned down his dance moves and maintained a down-to-earth demeanor Sunday. On Sunday night, as his opening act the Greyhounds played its bluesy set at Nokia Theatre at Grand Prairie, Mr. Hicks ambled onstage, shyly waved to the crowd and offered a little backup help on the harmonica. After the song was over, he said, "See y'all in a few!" and walked back behind the curtain. We don't often see a Kelly Clarkson type do this. A few minutes later, Mr. Hicks popped out again, this time armed with his bandmates and several cans of Silly String. They deposited the contents on the Austin-based Greyhounds – who were ending their gig on the tour – and ran off with glee. If this guy is caught up in a star trip, he's keeping it well under wraps. The Idol victory, in fact, seems more of an afterthought than a badge of honor. These days, touring with a six-piece band and one backup singer, he focuses on a sound and style that is old-school R&B and blues – not exactly tailor-made for pop radio. Starting off with "Gonna Move," from his debut album, he displayed that strong, clear voice that any Idol fan would recognize but tapered down his herky-jerky dance moves for something, well, cooler. It could be that he possesses far more rhythm than we ever saw on the show. He also occasionally grabbed an instrument for a song, but not always; just before doing Van Morrison's "Naked in the Jungle," he was handed a guitar. "I've got a guitar player, I don't need this," he said, handing it back. Many performers would have kept it for show. In a set mixed with original songs and covers, one of the biggest crowd-pleasers was Sheryl Crow's "Run, Baby, Run," for which Mr. Hicks bent over to belt out. The Soul Patrol voiced its hearty approval. "When it came to the Idols tour, this was one of my favorite places," he said of Nokia Theatre. "It feels good in here for some reason." Back then, the auditorium was sold out; this time, half the seats were filled. Much has recently been made of the fact that he's the "least successful Idol" in terms of record sales. But on Sunday night, as Mr. Hicks performed his own music in his own style, occasionally breaking out into dancing fits of joy, he didn't seem too broken up about it. Joyful and leaner, cooler demeanor By ERIN WHITE STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER Taylor Hicks performed at Nokia Theatre at Grand Prairie on Sunday. Blue-eyed soul singer Taylor Hicks earned a reputation as an enthusiastic, energetic performer on his run that led to last season's American Idol win. Sunday night's concert at Nokia Theatre at Grand Prairie cemented that image. A leaner Hicks, looking suave in nicely fitting jeans, a black button-up and a slim-cut black blazer, boogied, jumped and twirled his way through a 1 1/2 -hour set. And though his energy hasn't tapered since Idol, he has lost some of the tics that so irritated judge Simon Cowell. Gone, for example, is the signature head-toss-Whoo! combo that critics loved to imitate, and his dance moves are more fluid and less awkward. The Soul Patrol -- Hicks' self-named band of followers -- didn't manage to pack the theater, but they certainly provided vocal support. The female-heavy crowd, which skewed 45 and older, were yelling and clapping before Hicks reached the stage and continued to cheer after every song. The crowd often remained enthusiastic and on its feet through entire numbers. Hicks has a great voice for the brand of soul he sings, and he's best when belting out an ad-lib. Notably, he did not perform his first single, Do I Make You Proud. That's just as well. The singer, who kept up an admirable groove through most of the set, wilted on his second single, Just to Feel That Way. The clichéd ballad didn't jibe with the mood. He looked happier singing the songs he had a hand in penning. He also peppered the show with pleasantly unexpected covers. Hicks performed stellar versions of Sheryl Crow's Run, Baby, Run and Bryan Adams' The Right Place. Late in the show, he did Supertramp's Goodbye Stranger. The audience didn't seem to know the song. But Hicks was having so much fun, they enjoyed it anyway. GRADE: B+ Erin White SOUL PATROL MEMORIES: courtesy of historia1. What else can be said that hasn't already been said ? This is an excellent show with a variety of songs performed for the viewer with eclectic tastes. A great combination of Soul/Blues/Soft-rock/funk/ballads and gospel tinged musc. This guy can do it all -- touch you and entertain you. It is very clear that Hicks loves his music and gives 100% back to the audience. This is a musical experience not to be missed. courtesy of smk13792. Nokia theatre is a great theatre - good accoustics. Taylor's voice and dancing were just primo. All the nuances that I really like about Taylor were out in force. He even whistled in one song. His band is awsome, and seem to be able to be directed by Taylor with just a small gesture. I hope you see him live. courtesy of smk1379
