On the road again, Goin' places that I've never been. Seein' things that I may never see again, And I can't wait to get on the road again.() THE ORPHEUM THEATRE 528 S. Pierce Street Sioux City, IA SEATING CAPACITY: 2650 / SOLD OUT! ![]() THE ORPHEUM THEATRE WHOMP AND SWAMP MUSIC IN SIOUX CITY The Sioux City Orpheum Theatre will host Taylor Hicks and Whomp and Swamp music on March 24. This once “opulent vaudeville and moving picture house boasted a large 2,650 seat, three story auditorium complete with Wurlitzer pipe organ, half circle boxes, hand carved detailing, gilded ornamentation, several crystal chandeliers and a hand painted ceiling.” After the Orpheum was turned into a one-story movie theatre in the 1970s and 80s, an extensive renovation began in 1999. Original features were restored with meticulous detail. “The aluminum entrance doors were replaced with historically appropriate African mahogany doors. All of the terrazzo baseboards and mahogany handrails were stripped and their finishes restored. The original drapes and fabric wall coverings were reproduced in both the grand lobby and the auditorium.” The Grand Lobby was returned to its former splendor. ![]() For beautiful pictures and more details about the Orpheum Theatre, visit: http://www.orpheumlive.com/history/index. OPENING ACT MICHAEL WARREN WILL “CHASE THIS DREAM” ![]() “Whether performing live or emanating from a CD, Michael Warren grabs his listeners not only by the quality of his music but by a deeper quality heard in his music – the truth of being himself above all else. Backed by friends and fans alike, Michael will – in his own words – ‘chase this dream until it’s mine.’” Michael will open for Taylor when the Solo Tour plays Little Rock, Sioux City, Prior Lake, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Chicago, Cleveland, and Greensburg, PA. “Originally from Hoover, AL, Michael wasted no time working towards his musical dream. Recently he was honored with an invitation to perform in a nationally televised UNCF fundraising concert. He has performed major music festivals in Alabama, including Birmingham City Stages, Montgomery's JubileeCityfest, Huntsville Big Spring Jam, Mobile Bayfest, and Orlando Florida's Red White & Boom. He has opened for Robert Cray, B.B.King, Live, Gladys Knight, Will Hoge, Marc Broussard, FogHat, Howie Day, Master P.,Ryan Caberra, Taylor Hicks, Dave Barnes and Michael Tolcher. Michael and his band went to Germany in March 2006 where they played a USO concert for our troops on leave from Iraq. There is a familiarity that is found in the universal themes of Michael's lyrics and a refreshing uniqueness in the music under them. By blending R&B, rock, pop and funk, Michael has created his own distinct sound that continues to win new fans. “At a tender age, his voice is filled with the deep soul of legendary singers twice his age. On his debut album, Michael runs the gamut of life's experiences. He portrays the emotional depths of finding love in "From the Moment" and the hurtful anger of losing it in "Go Back." The album gracefully moves on to the self-affirming "Won't Stay Down" and "Big City" - chronicling the struggles of moving on in life and realizing a dream.” Read more at: wally@houseofwally.comManagement:: (Source: wally@houseofwally.comManagement: FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WOULD LIKE TO PATRONIZE MICHAEL WARREN, PLEASE GO TO THE FOLLOWING LINKS FOR TOUR DATES . http://www.michaelwarrenmusic.com/web/ http://www.myspace.com/michaelwarren SETLIST Soul Thing Give Me Tonight Gonna Move Wherever I Lay My Hat - Nightshift ( the Commordores ) Dream Myself Awake The Deal Hell of a Day Just to Feel That Way Compared to What - Goin’ Up the Country ( Canned Heat ) Heart and Soul - Want Ads ( Honey Cone ) - Can’t Trust Your Neighbor ( Freddie King ) She’s Gone ( Hall and Oates ) The Right Place Heaven Knows The Maze - Rough God Goes Riding ( Van Morrison ) - Let’s Get It On ( Marvin Gaye ) Encore: The Runaround REVIEW From the Sioux City Journal, March 25, 2007 Hicks proves he's the 'real deal' By Bruce R. Miller Journal staff writer You could put Taylor Hicks up against this year's crop of "American Idol" contestants and he'd probably win again. He has more energy than all of them combined. At his Orpheum Theatre concert Saturday night, he bounced like Tigger, twirled like a top and danced like a Southern preacher. Oh, yeah ... and he sang pretty good, too. Because he just released his first post-"Idol" album, Hicks doesn't have a string of "remember these?" hits. As a result, he's forced to sell the unknown songs with the same passion. It worked, but the 30-year-old Alabama native really got a reaction when he covered Hall and Oates' "She's Gone" and sang a tribute to Ray Charles. It was real "Idol" time with both -- a chance to show what he's able to do with classic material. His own stuff doesn't have the same complexity. A song like "Gonna Move" lets him strut his stuff, but its lyrics are pretty simple. Similarly, "Dream Myself Awake" has a hook ("I can't get enough of you baby") that should be surrounded by much more. A seven-piece band gave Hicks a fairly big sound but he could do just as much with less. Interestingly, he didn't have an acoustic set stuck in the middle. Most of his R&B cuts are fairly up-tempo. As a result, he never stood still. Just watching him was enough to make you sweat. Then, too, Hicks played a pretty mean tambourine (pounding it on his chest -- are there marks?), a powerful cowbell (on "Just to Feel That Way," his single) and harmonica. He threw in some guitar work here and there and looked like he would do a drum solo if someone had asked. Dressed in jeans, sneakers, a black shirt and a black blazer, Hicks made a couple of "Idol" references ("Thank you all for voting for me ... I was voting, too"), sang songs from an earlier album and showed glimpses of so many other singers you kind of understand what it takes to win the Fox talent show. Throughout the evening, he resembled everyone from Michael McDonald to Simon Cowell -- yup, even Simon. He danced more than the contestants on "Dancing With the Stars" and had a sense of gratitude that didn't seem insincere. Indeed, if any message came through, it was this: Taylor Hicks is not going to waste the opportunity he has been given. Michael Warren, another Alabama resident, opened the two-hour-plus show with a handful of songs that had a mellow, John Mayer feel. He had some nice messages to convey and a good voice. The Soul Patrol, however, was primed for Hicks. They stood up from the start and, like their man, didn't let down throughout his show. Given the right songs, Hicks could be unstoppable. Now, he's forced to work a little harder and play a lot smarter. Thankfully, he's not afraid to do it. SOUL PATROL MEMORIES: courtesy of iowa's#1hicksfanTaylor Hicks proved at this concert why he won AI. It's a feeling you get when you are in the same room with him. He grabs the crowd and takes them on a musical journey with him. He's not just a singer, he's a musician and an incredible entertainer. You get the feeling he is creating it custom made just for you right in front of your eyes. He's the kind of artist that is hard to show how good he is on a recording, because the magic we love happens in front of a live audience. I hope his next recording is a live concert, because it's so fun to watch him love his music so much! courtesy of iowa's#1hicksfan courtesy of mandyNETaylorfan We loved his dark jacket, and the lights played off his hair beautifully. The blue lighting made his hair look very ethereal at times. It definitely set the mood! Taylor would move around in a variety of ways (not sure how he does that!) and groove with various band members, even shaking the hand of the drummer mid beat. He really loves his band, and they seem to adore him too. ....Taylor seems to love that instrument that looks like a tambourine……or is it one? Whatever it was, he shook the dickens out of it! And we all clapped and clapped to the rhythm of many songs. It was quite a show! I didn’t want it to end and was begging for more. “Heaven Knows” and “The Maze” blended into each other, which was so cool, as they are favorites of mine. For those wondering, this is what I had been planning on writing about yesterday. It's now official. I'm gonna go see the One And Only Taylor Hicks in concert on March 24th in Sioux City, IA. Sweetie and I had been looking at possibly going to one of the Kansas City concerts, but the tickets (BEFORE taxes and Ticketmaster's portion of your arm and leg) were $55...which we just couldn't financially justify. The Sioux City tix are only $36.50, though...as it is, my parents (I love you, Mom and Dad!) sponsored the cost of one ticket as an early birthday present and Sweetie (I love you, Sweetie!) sponsored the cost of the other again as an early birthday present to me. So look for us at the Orpheum in Sioux City, Main Floor Left Center, Row E. I'll be the one with the goofy, dopey grin on my face, and Sweetie will be the slightly embarrassed one trying to act as though she's kind of there with the idiot next to her (which would be me), but not really all that much. I know, dear readers, that there are a number of you right now shaking your heads and thinking "Oh, poor sweet misguided LutheranHusker, why oh why did you give in to the American Idol machine?" Well, let me tell you, if you are uninitiated with the musical phenomenon that is Taylor Hicks, you're in for a surprise, because ladies and gents, this guy is the Anti-Idol. The man eats, sleeps, breathes, and probably even poops music (don't ask me how that last one would work). He grew up playing his harmonica and singing in smoky bars from age 16 on, and his influences are along the lines of Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, and Joe Cocker...not your typical teeny-bopper Idol. He's said from the beginning that his dream is to basically live on a tourbus, play a bunch of shows, stopping occasionally to record more stuff, then to hop back on the bus again...he's backing it up so far on his first post-Idol solo tour, with 55 concert dates scheduled so far over the course of the next 90 days. God created the man with a gift for live concerts. Suffice it to say that March 24th can't come soon enough. During the American Idol tour last summer, Taylor had a habit of playing the AI concert, then leaving the arena and heading to a local club to do a "real" concert with "real" music. His old "pre-Idol" band, Little Memphis Blues Orchestra, followed him to a few cities and he'd play with them...I can't even imagine doing the Idol concert from say 7 until 10 then heading to a club and playing from 11 until 1 or 2...then crawling on to a bus and doing it all again. But when you've got it in your blood, instead of sapping your energy, it's what gives you life. The church has a semi-fancy word for it that we're as the church beginning to rediscover...it's called vocation. From the Latin vocatio, it means your calling. What is your calling? It's not just to describe pastor-type folks in the church, and it's also not just to describe what you do from 9 to 5. You wanna see someone who's living out their vocation, their calling, as a musician? Check out this clip of Taylor and Little Memphis Blues Orchestra covering Joe Cocker's Feelin' Alright. Great stuff... http://lutheranhusker.blogspot.com/search?q=taylor+hicks Mandy . Several of us tried to stand near the door to Taylor’s bus, but security moved us back behind the ‘blue’ bus. Our wait was soon rewarded. A number of ladies (well most were ladies there) got autographs. I stood back just taking pictures. It was magical and then it was over credit to RagsQueen
