Now two and two is four, six and two is eight.
Come on baby, don't you make me late.
I'm cryin' hey, baby, don't you want to go,
To the same old place, sweet home Chicago.

In 1992, a historic colonial house in Cambridge, Massachusetts was converted into the original House of Blues, a home for live music and southern-inspired cuisine in an environment celebrating the African American cultural contributions of blues music and folk art. Honoring this mission, Dan Aykroyd, James Belushi, Aerosmith, Harvard University, River Phoenix, Paul Schaffer and many others financed the original House of Blues. The original House of Blues opened its doors to the public after serving a group of homeless people on Thanksgiving Day, 1992.

House of Blues Entertainment, Inc., a Los Angeles-based global entertainment company, is the definitive live music brand. This dynamic company with soul, spirit and vision is comprised of several unique businesses, including:

House of Blues Clubs, which operate 1,000 - 2,300 capacity venues located in New Orleans, Los Angeles, Chicago, Myrtle Beach, Orlando, Las Vegas, Anaheim, Cleveland, San Diego and Atlantic City and coming soon to Dallas, Houston and Philadelphia.
House of Blues Concerts, Inc., which owns, operates or exclusively books 19 arena and amphitheatre venues throughout North America, including Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver, Dallas, Seattle (The Gorge), Atlanta, Cleveland, Toronto and Vancouver.

From the Beacon News Online:

Little bit of soul goes a long way for Hicks
'Idol' winner an onstage dynamo who makes most of gifts

March 31, 2007
BY BOBBY REED

Showmanship counts. During his sold-out concert Thursday night at the House of Blues, Taylor Hicks demonstrated that he isn't gifted with a dynamic vocal range, nor is he a virtuoso musician. He is, however, a powder keg who uses copious energy to compensate for his shortcomings.

p> Hicks, 30, was the winner of the fifth season of the TV juggernaut "American Idol.'' More than 36 million TV viewers watched the Alabama native get crowned during last season's May finale.
Like an episode of "Idol,'' Thursday's concert featured plenty of classic pop songs, as Hicks sprinkled covers and musical snippets into a 90-minute show that included 10 tunes from his self-titled album, released in December.

Taylor Hicks did not display great vocal range Thursday night at the House of Blues, but his showmanship was enough to satisfy his devoted "soul patrol."
(Scott Stewart/Sun-Times)
Hicks' vocal style emphasizes volume over nuance, exuberance over melody. He was hamstrung on the slower numbers, bellowing to ill effect on "The Right Place'' and sliding into histrionics on the bombastic adult contemporary ballad "Just to Feel That Way.''
Backed by a competent sextet, Hicks fared far better on uptempo material, like his potent version of "Heaven Knows,'' which included a taste of Marvin Gaye's hit "Ain't That Peculiar.'' Hicks peaked with a sizzling cover of "Compared to What.'' This muscular workout exemplified what the singer does best: dust off musical gems and inject them with an enthusiastically rendered dose of blue-eyed soul.

Hicks acknowledged he is standing on the shoulders of giants by dropping in segments or lyrics from songs popularized by Chuck Berry, the Commodores, Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett and Sly & the Family Stone.

Hicks' abilities as a guitarist were overshadowed by the silver letters on his guitar strap, which spelled out Soul Patrol, the name he has given to his devoted fan base. He offered rudimentary noodling on the organ during one number, and his harmonica runs throughout the night were generally unbridled, occasionally getting screechy on the high end.

The singer has called his onstage antics "high-impact soul aerobics,'' which is an apt description for what fans witnessed at the House of Blues. The gray-haired dynamo hopped up and down while thwacking a cowbell with a drumstick, ran in place while huffing into a harmonica, completed a few airborne twirls and dramatically wagged and snapped his fingers. None of it was particularly graceful, but all of it enhanced the performance, unlike his distracting habit of battering his chest with a tambourine.

A key aspect of Hicks' appeal is that he exudes confidence without cockiness. He clearly believes in his retro-influenced artistry, whether he's singing about "squares'' or delivering old-school lyrics (such as "sock it to me'') without irony. Hicks spoke very little onstage and when he did, it was a mundane comment like, "Thank you, guys, for voting for me.''

Hicks likes to tailor his set list to fit the city where he's playing, so this audience was subjected to a rote reading of "Born in Chicago,'' a '60s blues number composed by Chicagoan Nick Gravenites. Hicks invited blues guitarist Keb' Mo' to join him during the encore for a wooden version of our town's most overplayed anthem, "Sweet Home Chicago.''

Hicks continued his Windy City blues theme after the show. According to GrayCharles.com, the official Taylor Hicks blog, the singer went to Buddy Guy's Legends afterward and joined the musicians onstage.

Bobby Reed is a local free-lance writer.

SOUL PATROL MEMORIES:

1. More than I expected. Gritty, down and dirty, bluesy, funky big-time soul show. The whole band was on fire, crowd really loud and totally into it! When Taylor introduced his "mentor," Keb Mo, for the encore, Sweet Home Chicago, the whole place erupted. Great jammin with him and Josh (band's lead guitarist). Lots of bass solo time (Al rocks!), Hicks was unbelievably intense. Great show. Only complaint? Too short, these guys could go all night.

2. MAGIC!!!! THAT IS TAYLOR HICKS!!!!
First Taylor concert I saw and am lucky to have tickets in Joliet April 25th and am trying to get to HOB in Las Vegas.

YOU HAVE TO SEE TAYLOR IN CONCERT!!!! As good as everyone's comments are seeing Taylor in person, on stage, live is HOT HOT HOT.!!!! He has so much charisma and engery and his singing is everything you will love. The guy can do anything. Play guitar, harmonica, keyboards (a little bit) and keep the audience eating out of the palm of his hand. The fans were moving and a grooving and enjoying themselves as much as Taylor was on stage. HE HAS TO HAVE A DVD COMMING OUT SOON!!! You can tell the man is ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC and is sincere. RUN....DON'T WALK TO YOUR NEAREST TAYLOR HICKS CONCERT YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT...AND I KNOW YOU WILL KEEP GOING BACK FOR MORE!!!!

3. Blew the roof off of a packed House of Blues in Chicago. What a great live performer. There hasn't been anyone that crazy on stage in James Brown. Loved, loved, loved it. I want more!

4.
jensenholmes says: Fantastic! I was at the HOB in Chicago that night. What an electric evening. I watch Hicks perform like some James Brown throwback. And I think, *this* is our American Idol? Well holy god, who knew America could ever pick a genuine article? If you haven't seen a Taylor Hicks concert, put aside your preconceptions and go.
