Not only was the King one of the inspirations for Hicks' singing but also for that fancy footwork that gets his Soul Patrol fans on their feet. "I'd look at myself in the mirror, and that's where I got those moves," Hicks said by phone last week from Chicago, one of the stops on his 53-city tour. "And I threw in a little bit of Elvis. It was just studying and watching all of those greats, like Elvis, Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke, and loving their music that influenced me." That means you can expect plenty of high-energy soul from last year's American Idol when he takes the stage at North Fork Theatre at Westbury Saturday night. And he also promises plenty of those happy-feet dance moves that leave the Soul Patrol intoxicated but prompted "Idol" judge Simon Cowell to ask, "Taylor, are you drunk?" when Hicks performed Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" on the show. "I thought some of the criticism I got from Simon was unfair. I knew I just had to leave it up to America. But Simon did congratulate me when I won," he said. Despite having to endure Cowell's zingers, Hicks still has nothing but gratitude for the show. "Learning how to perform under pressure like that every week really helped me to become a better performer," he said. Hicks also doesn't seem fazed that his self-named disc, which debuted at No. 2 in December on the album charts, was nowhere to be found on Billboard's Top 100 this week, while fourth-place finisher Chris Daughtry's album, which spent several weeks at No. 1, is still in the No. 4 spot after 18 weeks. "I think the record-buying public and the TV audience might be a little different," he says. "My job isn't to compare numbers. My job is to go out and play the best music to my fans." Lovers of Gray Charles, as Hicks' fans affectionately call him, can expect him to perform about 18 songs Saturday night, including his latest single, "Just to Feel That Way." As he does after every show, Hicks will be on hand to meet and greet his fans. "I'm very grateful to the Soul Patrol. It's a big demographic, a variety of people of all ages, which is cool. You want that as an artist," he said. Following the tour, which is set to wrap in mid-May, Hicks will then get ready to promote his autobiography, "Heart Full of Soul," which arrives in July. While penning his life story at age 30 may seem as premature as those gray strands, Hicks' book will travel down the 10-year road to "Idol," with stops in Nashville, where he struggled to get his music career going, and Hollywood and his "Idol" experiences. In between the music and book tours, there's something else Hicks said he's looking forward to: "I'm going to sleep for a week." Review: Taylor Hicks gets by with help from fans at the North Fork Theatre BY J. EDWARD KEYES Special to Newsday April 9, 2007 Like most pop concerts, the one that took place at North Fork Theatre at Westbury on Saturday was populated by stars and by fans. The tricky part came in trying to figure out which one was which. If you went by what was printed on the ticket, the star was Taylor Hicks, the 30-year-old winner of last year's "American Idol," an Alabama native and owner of the most awe-inspiring eyebrows since Sam the Eagle. Technically speaking, "Idol" was Hicks' second shot at stardom. He released two albums independently -- one in 1997 and another eight years later -- and spent countless months kicking around the club circuit and generally doing very little to accelerate his own celebrity until he turned up on TV in early 2006. That's where those fans come in. Their fevered weekly voting ensured Hicks' "Idol" victory, which in turn scored him a major-label record contract and enough clout to headline his own national tour, which is how he ended up on stage at a sold-out North Fork Theatre. Hicks' acolytes take their adoration seriously: Christening themselves The Soul Patrol, they turn up in articles about Hicks as often as he does (See? There they go again). They express their devotion on Internet message boards and voice sharp concerns when Hicks appears on stage with notorious scoundrels like Snoop Dogg. And can you blame them? In a way, they had as much to do with Hicks' stardom as he did. Fortunately for them, Hicks understands what it's like to be a fan. Saturday night's show started with the in-house PA system playing The Bar-Kays' "Soul Finger" -- the whole thing -- and much of the remainder could best be described as a raucous romp through Hicks' record collection. Luckily, he's got great taste. He and his airtight seven-piece band segued an extended, spirited rendition of Huey "Piano" Smith's "Rockin' Pneumonia" into a simmering take on The Meters' "Hey Pocky A-Way." They tagged a bit of Otis Redding's "Sad Song" to the front of "Heaven Knows," and sprinkled the rest of the set with reverent quotes from such soul chestnuts as "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man" and Les McCann's "Compared to What." They were the kind of choices only someone thoroughly versed in R&B would be canny enough to make. In fact, you could argue that Hicks is a better fan than he is a star. This characterization has a downside: As a vocalist, Hicks is still just passable. He doesn't have much in the way of dynamic or tone, and he has a tendency to holler when he's going for the high notes. But it also has its virtues: For most of Saturday's show, Hicks was content to vanish into the band, just another soul lover dancing giddily and goofily to the music. When quitting time came at last, Hicks simply slipped backstage, offering only a small wave and a slight smile. Not the kind of exit a star makes, perhaps, but it suits a fan just fine. SOUL PATROL MEMORIES: courtesy of dianec1. Can't say I knew much about Taylor Hicks but my son and daughter both wanted to go to this concert because they loved him on AI. Well, you can teach an old dog new tricks! What everyone has said previously is true. This man ROCKS the house and then some! It was a fantastic first concert experience for my kids. I must say, I enjoyed the fact they were exposed to many styles of music. With all the stuff out there I don't want them to listen to - I am proud of their musical choice. We are trying to get tickets to another concert. It was a blast! 2. Being from New York and close to the city, I thought I've seen everything. But Taylor Hicks really showed this jaded city folk that concerts can still be enjoyed in an old fashioned way. The man simply evokes charm and passion. Most of all, he CONNECTS with the audience... this is something rarely seen in performers nowadays ( especially those who mask their shortcomings with light and smoke props ). Taylor does none of that -- this is one pure acoustic, joyful concert. CATHYM20063. L. Hanrehan says: Just saw him at Westbury, Wow what a performer, the man is on fire! So glad he won American Idol but the way he is now he would even beat his idol performances out. He takes command of the stage and wraps you around his finger. He is overpowering and the music is just so good and he the best performer around today, please don't miss him, you won't regret it. courtesy of dianec |
