I get up in the evening, and I ain't got nothing to say
I come home in the morning,
I go to bed feeling the same way.
I ain't nothing but tired,
Man, I'm just tired and bored with myself.
Hey there baby, I could use just a little help.

You can't start a fire, you can't start a fire without a spark.
This guns for hire even if we're just dancing in the dark.

ALL ABOUT SOUL

'Idol' winner Taylor Hicks lets the music breathe
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 04/6/07
BY CHRIS JORDAN
GANNETT NEW JERSEY

Gray hair, goofy dance movies and white-guy awkwardness seemed to make Taylor Hicks the antithesis of "American Idol" material. But thanks to a trunkload of charisma and an old-soul voice, he's the 2006 champion.

Talk about swimming upstream.

"I'm swimming upstream with a dream," Hicks said at the onset of his first post-"Idol" headlining tour. "It is a dream. It comes true every day. I'm very thankful, but I feel like I have a goal. I feel like I have a calling to bring that feeling and that soulfulness back to the forefront of music."

Classic '60s R&B and soul are the wellspring from which Hicks draws his inspirations. While there are several contemporary artists also inspired by the classic '60s R&B sound — John Legend and New Jersey's Jaheim come to mind — Hicks is perhaps more closely identified with the era.

"First off, that music is real — it's not processed," Hicks said. "It's a live band with
live horns. Nowadays, there's a lot of tracked material and the music on a track is very prompt — there's no room to breathe. The music that I'm doing in this tour breathes soul."

Hicks is on the road through May and will make a stop Tuesday at Sayreville's Starland Ballroom.
"I got eight pieces, including myself," Hicks said. "I'm not selling the music short —
it's what I do. I played in small get-ups my whole life, and now I have an opportunity to play in a big get-up and not leave any note behind.

"This is the best live music I've ever played in my whole life, and I've been doing it a
long time."

Hicks was born in Birmingham, Ala., and discovered music as a child. His life to this point has been spent largely on the road playing the roadhouses of the Southeast.

"I honed my craft that way," Hicks said.

Hicks won the "American Idol" title last May. Since then, he's had a No. 1 single, "Do I Make You Proud," was named Hottest Bachelor of the Year by People magazine and released his self-titled Arista debut, at a No. 2 bow, in December.

The Soul Patrol, Hick's boisterous fan club, is no doubt happy.

"I'm going to be performing in all the music venues and small theaters and small clubs all over the country from the Beacon (Theatre in New York City) to the Fillmore (in San Francisco)," Hicks said. "All of the places I think good live music dwells."

1. I was fortunate to be at last night's show at the Starland. It was my first show...ever. I had a wonderful time, coming away with an even greater respect for that man's talents. Taylor and his band were amazing. Taylor seemed really happy, the crowd was awesome.... by barbjay

2. wow. Whats awesome about Taylor is you never know what to expect and his energy is amazing. I felt like I got a workout just watching him. This show is right up there w/ my favorite Stevie Nicks/Don Henley show and The eagles hell freezes over tour. I'm 37 and I love his style of music takes me back to when we had good music.

3. By eagles Pros: Crowd Was In To It, Engaging Stage Presence, Great Encores, Great Lighting, Great Sound, Perfect Set List, Taylor was INCREDIBLE !!!
Best For: Everyone
I still have chills, the show was so great. It was general admission and I got to stand right next to the stage on the guitarist side. Taylor was 15 feet away from me all night, I still think I was dreaming. Cannot wait to see him again, cannot stop playing his music. YOU ARE AWESOME TAYLOR !!!!!!!!!!
