Got no money in the pocket. You don't get rich working overtime. But as long as you can't buy the springtime in Virginia. I ain't gonna worry, No I ain't gonna worry, Ain't gonna worry my mind. -Ray Charles April 15 Sunday 7:30 ![]() THE BIRCHMERE 3701 Mount Vernon Ave. Arlington, VA 22305 ( DC area ) 703-549-7500 TICKETS: SOLD OUT! SEATING CAPACITY: 500 HOTELS AND RESTAURANTS: THE BIRCHMERE: This long-running establishment has continued to be one of the best places in the Washington area to see acoustic folk and bluegrass artists perform live. Light rock bands have also been known to take the stage. The performance space includes a stage, tables and a dance floor. The 500-seat hall has a roomy feel to it and provides an excellent setting for live performances. Birchmere serves typical pub fare—burgers, sandwiches, steaks and pasta. The Birchmere is unique in the area for providing a comfortable and relatively small (500-seat) setting, where you sit and listen to the music (there's not a bad seat in the house) and order food and drinks. The Birchmere got started 30 years ago, when it booked mostly country singers. The place has expanded over the years and so has its repertoire; there are still many country and bluegrass artists, but also folk, jazz, rock, gospel, and alternative musicians. The menu tends toward American favorites, such as nachos and burgers; I recommend the pulled-pork barbecue sandwich and the chili.” ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() OPENING ACTS: Toby Lightman SETLIST: Opening: Toby Lightman Gonna Move Give Me Tonight Compared to What - Goin Up The Country (Canned Heat ) - Traveling South The Deal Dream Myself Awake Wherever I Lay My Hat Just to Feel that Way Hell of a Day - Inner City Blues ( jam ) My Friend Medicated Goo Heaven Knows The Maze - Use Me ( Bill Withers ) - Want Ads ( Honey Cone) The Right Place The Runaround - Willie Brown Blues ( Ry Cooder) No Encore MEDIA: A TEACHER IN THE HOUSE..PERHAPS! From washingtonpost.com April 14: NAMES AND FACES For Hicks, the Year of the Hoarse -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stardom will wreak havoc on your vocal cords, a hoarse Taylor Hicks told us yesterday. "This schedule can get to you sometimes," last season's "American Idol" winner said. "There's not enough hours in the day to get really solid vocal rest. I've got to be extra careful." Hicks, 30, is currently touring to promote his major-label debut album and will stop at the Birchmere on Monday. While he says he loves "being a working musician and having the phone ring," he doesn't even have a permanent address at the moment: "My job is all over the country, and for me to be spending money on a place is not very smart." A busy work schedule has kept him from scoping out this season's "AI" contestants, and he pleads the Fifth when it comes to controversial contestant Sanjaya Malakar. Up next for the pop star: A memoir due out in July, recording another album, and a possible reunion with his ninth-grade English teacher (and former Laura Bush press secretary), Susan Whitson. "I talked to her and sent her an e-mail," he said. "I hope she's going to come out." From the Richmond Times-Dispatch: Interview with Taylor Hicks Taylor Hicks plays the Birchmere this Sunday and Monday Richmond Times-Dispatch Apr 12, 2007 TAYLOR HICKS Q. How are you enjoying Milwaukee? A. I'm actually going to the post office right now. So, how has the tour been so far? Great. The crowds are great. Of all the finalists, you were the most experienced as far as recording and touring, so with that background, is touring now any different for you? I'm riding instead of driving -- that's always a good thing. But I never minded driving. It's grueling. It's tough. I've made it my life for the last 10 years. Do you think you're comfortable with the fame that the show has brought? We'll see. This will be my first trip to the post office since I won the show. I think I am. I just stay grounded and keep everything in perspective. Are members of Limbo playing with you? The organ player is. I've got a couple of gigs with those guys in the next few months. But I have a different band on the road. Nice of you to lend some of them to Elliott last summer when he played the State Fair of Virginia. That was cool; it made sense. I told him that -- use Little Memphis. Have you heard his album or talked to him recently? I haven't heard the album but have talked to him in the last couple of weeks. I've been very busy. I hear you're doing [Hall & Oates'] "She's Gone." Any particular reason for that song? We tried it a couple of nights ago. We're always on the bus traveling and playing and learning new music and writing. It just came up and it stuck. Tell me about your live show -- I assume you're playing as well as singing? It's an eight-piece soul band. I'm a live performer, play guitar, harmonica, blues harp. I'm more than the performer that you saw on the show. Will you be playing songs from your pre-Idol days? Yes, playing some from "Under the Radar" and "In Your Time." I saw the People magazine story last week about your weight loss. That's gotta be killing you to not eat the stuff you've been used to -- I know it would me. It's been quite an active year. What's been the hardest thing to resist? Chocolate cake is very enticing . . . REVIEW: Here's the Washington Post review of Taylor Hick's concert at the Birchmere : Concert Review: Taylor Hicks By Catherine P. Lewis Taylor Hicks may not have the looks that are expected from an "American Idol" winner or sing a style of music that is pop-radio-friendly, but the Birchmere's sold-out crowd hardly seemed to care. In fact, Hicks himself seemed thrilled to indulge in his personal favorite genres on Sunday night, as his soulful croon massaged a snippet of Bill Withers's "Use Me" into the end of his song "Heaven Knows" (whose piano riff is itself a homage to Hicks's hero Ray Charles). Hicks's overpowering backing band of seven musicians left very little room for subtlety, as much of the evening's music was performed at a constant high volume. To his credit, Hicks boomed over even the loudest instrumentation: his smooth, smoky voice carried the thunderous "Dream Myself Awake" and the Jackson Browne-ish "The Deal." While the merits of hearing every word could be debated (such cheesy lyrics as "I can't get enough of you, baby!" might have been better drowned out), Hicks was wholeheartedly committed to every onstage move. And his fans loved him for it. From a killer bout on the harmonica ("The Runaround") to his trademark awkward, jerky dance moves during a cover of Traffic's "Medicated Goo," he induced squeals of delight around the room. Those moments showed his genuine flair for entertaining, but a few quieter, subtler songs could have given him the versatility of a true performer. SOUL PATROL MEMORIES: 1.I attended my first ever Taylor Hicks concert at the Birchmere Sunday, April 15 and it was outstanding and SOLD OUT. Taylor walks on the stage and the audience is immediately mesmerized -- we watched his every move and anticipated his actions. You know there must be other people there because you hear drums, sax, piano, guitars, bass, but all you can see if Taylor. His every move is smooth as molassas, his every nod to the band is quickly picked up and interpreted, and the voice is unbelievebly rich and vibrant. Taylor sang 15 songs last night -- including 4 songs he wrote on his first album Under The Radar. All were perfectly performed and sung -- his voice a beautifully rich tenor that reached the apex on The Right Place -- it was like Taylor was voicing a personal pleaa to each and every listener. He also played the harmonica -- not as much as usual -- but when he began the Run Around, everyone knew what would be next and the crown exploded. 2. I went to the Birchmere April 15th. Great show!!!! This is my observation, there were all age groups, from small children to grandparents. From the looks of some of the group in my area, they were mesmerized by the performance. I know I was and the videos coming out shows why. He is simply amazing, I took a person with me who had only seen the AI Taylor and various videos, his only complaint was he wished the show had lasted longer. This was from a person who went in with an open-mind and no pre-concieved ideas of what a performance of Taylor's would be. My only regret was I missed getting tickets for the Monday night show! Taylor Hicks is the consummate performer, singer, writer, and entertainer. If you have a chance to catch one of his concerts on this tour -- be sure to get there. You won't be dissapointed and you can say you saw the next great entertainer's career get launched! You can bet the next tour will be even better (and more expensive).
