Bally's Bikini Beach Bar gives you plenty of excuses to party during the day By LEE PROCIDA, Atlantic City Insiders June 5, 2013 http://www.atlanticcityinsiders.com/nightlife/bally-s-bikini-beach-bar-gives-you-plenty-of-excuses/article_7fb15a74-cdee-11e2-967a-001a4bcf887a.html This seaside scene remains the same After a three-summer run as Sammy’s Beach Bar, the beach bar at Bally’s is back to its original self, but little is truly changing at the oceanfront establishment now in its 10th season. It will be open daily through Labor Day, featuring a wide variety of drinks and entertainment, with bar staff dressed in their trademark bikinis. And, while the outdoor bar scene has gotten more crowded in recent years, there remain only two, completely open-air bars on the beach in Atlantic City that will be open every day this summer — and this is one of them. It’s a mixing pot under palm trees The beach bars in Atlantic City are probably the most diverse places to party in the city. You truly never know who you’re going to see, with people of all ages, races, nationalities and attitudes. That is probably because practically anyone can feel comfortable there, and when it’s warm out, people just want to enjoy the outdoors. This also makes the beach bar one of the most carefree places to drink and have a good time in the city. Every day brings something different Like they have for years, each day of the week here features a different entertainment theme and different set of drink specials. This year, Monday is Latin night, Tuesday features a special guest each week, Wednesday is reggae night, Thursday is rock star karaoke night, Friday is rock ’n’ roll night, Saturday is Top 40 night and Sunday is industry night. Each night also has at least four different drinks on special. The entertainment is real, and even more fantastic In addition to the rotating styles of cover bands the bar brings in each summer, it is hosting some nationally known acts, with Fuel on June 14 for a full band acoustic set, Howie Day on July 19, and Sugar Hill Gang on July 27. As for its regular slate of acts, bands start between 7 and 9 p.m. on weekdays, and around 1 or 2 p.m. on weekends. The booze is as refreshing as the breeze One of the hallmarks of the beach bar is its specialty cocktails and frozen concoctions that are perfect for cooling off in the sun. Its specialties this year include the Jersey Fist Pump, the Jersey Blueberry, the Flip Flop, the Dirty Banana and the Bikini Breeze. They range in price from $9 to $13 each, feature all sorts of alcohol and sweet additives, and are an easy route to your own mini-vacation DIRECTIONS: ![]() MEDIA: 1. Taylor Hicks says, " I’m thrilled about my performances at Bally’s Blue Martini and Bikini Beach Bar in Atlantic City and to be on the East Coast. I’m excited to play for fans and share my unique blend of country, Southern soul and blues with the Bally’s audiences.” 4. Atlantic City Weekly Soul Patrol Alert: Taylor Hicks Is Coming The season five 'American Idol' champ will present free shows at Bally’s Bikini Beach Bar and Blue Martini Lounge starting July 18 By Lori Hoffman Jul. 10, 2013 When he won the fifth season of American Idol in 2005, Taylor Hicks knew that the white-hot spotlight of instant fame would not last, but he was prepared. After all, he had been a working musician for more than a decade when he won the title over a particularly strong group of performers including Katherine McPhee, Chris Daughtry, Elliott Yasmin and Kellie Pickler. Hicks is currently under contract with Caesars Entertainment and has a regular gig at the Paris Las Vegas where the top ticket price is $70. As part of a tour of other Caesars properties across the country, Hicks takes up residence at Bally’s Blue Martini Lounge and Bikini Beach Bar Thursday to Saturday July 18-20 and July 25-27, doing a one-hour set from 10-11pm at the Blue Martini and performing at 1-2pm Friday and Saturday both weekends at the Bikini Beach Bar. All the shows are free but seating is limited and you must be at least 21 to attend. You can bet the most eager fans will be members of his legendary fan base known as the Soul Patrol, in honor of Hicks’ blue-eyed soul style of blues and rock. Atlantic City Weekly had the opportunity to chat with Hicks this week about his casino tour. When you won American Idol, you understood that the “15 minutes of fame” would not last and more than most contestants you were prepared for that. I’ve always wanted to be a career artist and entertainer. I knew that at a very early age. I started performing professionally at 17. Idol for me was the ten-year overnight success story. I was blessed to have that Idol platform when it was the only game in town. You are currently touring other Caesars Entertainment properties across the country. Under that wonderful umbrella of Caesars Entertainment I get to travel to a lot of their sister properties and Bally’s in Atlantic City was the perfect fit. Tell us about the music you will be presenting in your Atlantic City shows. A lot of the music is favorites from Idol and some of the music from my albums and a couple of Vegas show tunes. And I’ll be working in some new material from the upcoming country album that I’m working on in Nashville. The new album sounds like an interesting direction for you to take your career. I’m putting together a soulful country record. Being from Alabama, country music was always a part of me growing up. I consider myself a very roots-oriented musician and artist. When you think of roots you think of a lot of different styles of music. I hope you don’t mind this question. Have your dance moves improved? I thought they were pretty good to begin with. Some people might not know that you have something in common with Bruce Springsteen and Sir Paul McCartney, that you were part of a Grammy winning comedy album Jimmy Fallon’s Blow You Pants Off, which are musical numbers compiled from his show. We all reveled in that compilation. You never think in a million years that you will be part of a Grammy winning comedy record before your own record. It’s something you are just proud to be a part of. I think the world of Jimmy and his comedic and musical taste. It was a really fun thing to do. Have you kept in touch with your Idol class? That was a group that we can now call vintage since so many have continued their success including Katharine McPhee, Elliott Yasmin, Chris Daughtry and Kellie Pickler. I do keep in touch with everybody. A lot of texting and different times of the year I’ll see them at private functions and concerts and at the Idol finale. Have you had a chance to watch American Idol recently? With all the changes and the ratings slide, do you think the show will survive? What is still great about American Idol is that the basis of the show is the contestants, not the actual show itself. As Idol changes the basis of the show is still the talent so I think it will be just fine. You performed twice in Atlantic City in 2007. Is this your first time back since then? It is. I’m looking forward to it. Atlantic City is a wonderful place to perform. Obviously the history of entertainers goes back a long time there and it will be nice to be back. 5. Delaware County News Network Taylor Hicks brings his Las Vegas show to Atlantic City July 18-27 July 12, 2013 by Joe Szczechowski Singer-songwriter Taylor Hicks knows that no matter what he achieves over the course of his career, he'll always be thought of as an “American Idol” winner. And that's okay with him. “I'm very blessed and fortunate to have come off of the biggest platform that ‘American Idol’ has ever had,” the 36-year-old Birmingham, Alabama native said in a recent telephone interview. “At that time, Idol was the biggest, and really the only game in town.” Hicks was the winner of American Idol's fifth season, which took place in 2006. It remains the highest-rated season in the show's run thus far. It also stands out for producing more successful recording artists than any other season. In addition to Hicks, other contestants that year included Katharine McPhee, Chris Daughtry, Bucky Covington, Kellie Pickler, and Elliott Yamin. In the seven years since, Hicks parlayed his American Idol success into three albums, several worldwide tours, an autobiography, and a role (as Teen Angel in “Grease”) on Broadway and a subsequent national tour. He began a residency at Bally's in Las Vegas in June 2012. Because of Hicks’ popularity, the show has moved to a larger venue in Paris Las Vegas, and Hicks’ contract has been extended through December 2013. As part of his contract with Caesars Entertainment, Hicks is bringing his show to Bally's Atlantic City. Hicks will perform shows in both the Blue Martini Lounge and Bikini Beach Bar Thursday to Saturday July 18-20 and July 25-27. He’ll play a one-hour set from 10-11pm at the Blue Martini and perform 1-2pm Friday and Saturday both weekends at the Bikini Beach Bar. While tickets to see Hicks in Las Vegas cost $45-$78, all of his Atlantic City shows are free! However, seating is very limited and you must be at least 21 to attend. “I enjoy the intimate setting of these venues that I'm playing at Bally's in Atlantic City,” Hicks says. “I think people really like the opportunity to see a show in an intimate setting and that type of ‘up-close-and-personal’ atmosphere. I grew up learning my craft by performing in smaller musical settings and venues for years, so it's something that I look forward to. I think it's a nice change of pace.” Hicks was already a seasoned musician by the time he auditioned for American Idol in October 2005. As a teenager he taught himself to play harmonica, guitar, and organ. He formed his first band while in college. In 1997, he independently recorded his first album, “In Your Time,” a collection of both studio and live tracks that showcased his soulful voice and blues-roots style. In 2000, he moved to Nashville to pursue a music career, but left after a year when no label would sign him. Hicks moved back to Alabama and resumed his independent career. His popularity grew to the point where he was tapped as an opening act for artists like James Brown, Tom Petty, Jackson Browne, Snoop Dogg, and Keb Mo. He recorded, produced, and independently released a second album, “Under the Radar,” in 2005. After his American Idol success, he was signed to Arista Records. His first single, "Do I Make You Proud" debuted on the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and was subsequently certified gold. His self-titled national debut album followed in December 2006. The album debuted at the number two spot on the Billboard 200 chart, but couldn't sustain its momentum. Critics gave it mixed reviews and the album sold only moderately well. Hicks was dropped by Arista records in 2008. Undaunted by the experience, Hicks independently released a follow-up album entitled “The Distance” in March 2009. He returned to performing, which has generally been acknowledged as his strongest asset. Even critics that gave his albums mixed reviews recognized Hicks’ skills as a live performer. Continued... “I think that's a testament to the result of playing as much as you can,” Hicks says. “That's what happens when you do about 250 shows out of 365 days a year.” Just for fun, I asked Hicks three questions regarding his opinion of other live performers. The best artist he personally ever saw perform live? “The Allman Brothers,” Hicks said. “I had the opportunity to sit in with them a couple of years ago. And the spinoff of that would be Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi.” What about an artist he never got to see live, but wished he had? “Led Zeppelin.” And finally, what artist surpassed his expectations, or surprised him by how good he or she was? “Feist.” Hicks says the residency in Las Vegas has only sharpened his own performance skills. “I've had the time to really hone in my show here in Vegas because I perform it five nights a week,” he says. “I've been performing with this band for quite some time, so we’re pretty tight. I try to keep the production of the music is great as it can be everywhere I go.” Continued... Some members of Hicks’ fan base, known as the “Soul Patrol,” come to see him multiple times during the year in Las Vegas. To keep things fresh, for both them and himself, Hicks changes the set list every few months. His shows always include favorites from his American Idol days, music from his albums, and a couple of Las Vegas show tunes. When not performing at one of the Caesars properties, he takes his band out on the road for more conventional concert appearances. “The music changes with the different crowds and venues that you play,” Hicks says. “Obviously want to take some of music from the show in Vegas, but I think it just depends on the crowd and the time and what's going on at that particular moment. That's why I love to have a large bank of songs to pull from.” Hicks says he's currently working on a new album, which he is recording in Nashville. He calls it a “soulful country record,” and says it will feature both his own songs as well is outside material. “You obviously want to collect and sing greatest material that you can,” he says. Whether you write it or you don't I think is secondary. I love writing, I like to co-write and I also like to collect and listen to other songwriters’ material. I'm in the studio now working on it and I will release it when it's ready. I know it's been a while since I've released music, but I also think that you want to be patient and try to find the best songs that you can.” Whether the album will be released independently or on a major label is yet to be determined. For now, Hicks says that he’s enjoying taking his residency shows around the country to various Caesars properties. He says if he were offered a residency extension beyond 2013, he would readily accept it. When asked about the eclectic nature of his post-American Idol career, Hicks chuckles. “I like to call it the Willie Nelson effect,” he says. “Willie is just Willie, and I'm just being Taylor. You have to blaze your own trail and be your own person. The more of an individual you can be in this business, the better off you are.” http://www.delconewsnetwork.com/articles/2013/07/12/entertainment/doc51e025546b28f699798968.txt?viewmode=fullstory 6. Taylor HIcks is Coming to Atlantic City credit to Bally AC 7. examiner.com Taylor Hicks, a soulful singer and true southern gentleman July 15, 2013 By: Carla IvesSubscribe http://www.examiner.com/article/taylor-hicks-a-soulful-singer-and-true-southern-gentleman?cid=rss . .If the name Taylor Hicks brings back memories of the fifth season of “American Idol,” you’re not alone. That win skyrocketed the southern gentleman to fame and fortune. The soulful singer has been very busy since that amazing night. He's coming to Bally’s beginning July 18 and singing. . . get this. . . for free. Recently, Taylor took time out of his busy schedule to speak with Examiner.com. We talked about his American Idol win. I asked him why he decided to audition for the show and found out it wasn't actually planned. I’ll let Taylor tell the story. ““I was one of the last taxicab rides out of New Orleans fleeing from Hurricane Katrina. The cab took me to West Monroe, La. I rented a car and drove home to Birmingham. Southwest Airlines gave me a free ticket anywhere in the country. On a whim, I decided to use that ticket to go to Las Vegas. I got in very late in the evening. When I got into my hotel room, I got a phone call from my brother telling me that auditions for American Idol were being held at the Convention Center in two hours. The rest, as they say, is history.” Since that win, Taylor Hicks has released three albums and is now working on his first all-country album which should be ready by mid-2014. Growing up in Birmingham, Ala., Taylor is perfectly comfortable with country music. Some of his early country music influences were Ronnie Milsap and T. Graham Browne. But it wasn't just country he listened to. There was the soul of performers like Ray Charles and Otis Redding, as well as the rock music of Bob Seeger and Van Morrison. Add an 18-month tour with the show “Grease” playing Teen Angel on Broadway and in 52 markets across the country, you have one multi-talented and multi-faceted performer. So out of all that, which genre does Taylor Hicks place himself in? Taylor calls himself a “roots-oriented artist.” Taylor has been playing and singing for a long time. He started out playing the guitar. He then added harmonica and organ. He’s also a songwriter and a published author, having penned his autobiography “Heart Full of Soul.” We talked about that, why he wrote “Heart Full of Soul” now and not later in life. Again, I’ll let Taylor tell you. ““I think one of the greatest things about having the ability to write -- the platform that I came from was such a -- it was a very -- it was really -- let me try to rephrase this. Winning American Idol at that time was such a -- it was so nice to, you know, be -- to have your own words heard. So for me, I think writing -- there were a lot of different people writing about me. This was a way I could tell my own story. “To a certain degree, I wanted my story to be an inspiration to a lot of people who might want to look into how I broke in, how success happened at my age. A lot of people just wanted to know my side of the story.” Taylor told me he’s proud of his most recent accomplishment, that of being the first “Idol” to have a theater in Las Vegas. Taylor has his own showroom at Paris Las Vegas and he absolutely loves it. He told me he is very proud to be associated with a great company like Caesars Entertainment. We were running out of time, so I asked Taylor about his dreams for the future. He talked about mentoring, taking l the experiences and education that he’s been able to garner throughout the years and help out and up-and-coming performer. He got that giving spirit, by the way, from his grandmother. Enjoy the show! .. 8. Atlantic City Weekly Ad ![]() 9. nj.com / New Jersey American Idol winner Taylor Hicks performs free concerts at Bally's Atlantic City July 25 - 27 By Whitney Ullman/NJ.com NJ.com July 24, 2013 NJ.COM: How awesome is it to be performing in Atlantic City? HICKS: I've always heard that the one thing someone should do before they die is visit the boardwalk in the summer. And I am super excited about performing in Atlantic City during the peak season. Most performers are there for one or two nights and can't enjoy much, but you'll be there for awhile, so you'll get to walk around and see some sights, have people given you advice on what to do? HICKS: I'm just pulling into town from NYC, I've gotten a couple of good restaurant recommendations. That's the great thing with my deal with Caesars Entertainment, I travel outside of my Las Vegas residency so I get to visit sister properties, like Bally's in Atlantic City, and really be able to experience what that particular city has to offer. What has life been like since American Idol? HICKS: I consider it like staying on a rocket ship. It obviously changed my life. I've always wanted to be an entertainer and being on the platform of American Idol at that particular time, I was very blessed to have my career launched in the way that it was. Would you ever consider being a judge on American Idol or any of the other popular singing competition shows? HICKS: I would. Obviously, going through the season that I went through, being the biggest American Idol they ever had or that any reality or talent show has ever had, I would love to do that. I would love to give my 2 cents. Who do you keep in touch with most and do you hang with any of the contestants? HICKS: Yes I do keep in touch with a lot of folks that I see. I talk to the winners a lot more than some of the other folks, just because I see the winners more often during the course of the year...Everybody is kind of family and it's always great to see everybody. You gotta love your Soul Patrol fans, how did that originate and what do you love most about them? HICKS: Well I'm just very excited to be able to have the legion of fans that I do. They are just very loyal, and to have that fan base is very special. If you weren't singing what would you do? HICKS: Probably be at the beach. One of your most recognizable assets besides your voice is your beautiful gray hair, you are so young, how come you chose to keep it? HICKS: You have to embrace some things about yourself, and obviously that's one of them. I've been embracing gray hair since...high school and I don't think that anything's changed since then. Inquiring minds want to know, are you in a relationship? HICKS: I'm very happy. Is there anything else you want fans to know? HICKS: I'm really excited about being in the studio right now, working a country album in Nashville...it has a soulful country vibe...I'm looking forward to releasing it soon. http://www.nj.com/atlantic-city-entertainment/index.ssf/2013/07/american_idol_season_5_winner_taylor_hicks_gives_free_concert_at_bally.html CAST OF CHARACTERS: Taylor Hicks Brian Less - keyboard Cody Farris - guitar SETLIST:* compilation Levon In The Ghetto - Yes We Can Can (Pointer Sisters) - Hot Fun in the Summertime’ (Sly & the Family Stone) - Movin’ on Up Back To Louisana On and On Angel From Montgomery ( Bonnie Raitt / John Paine ) Country Living Hallalujah I just Love Her So Takin' It To The Streets Seven Mile Breakdown - Do I Make You Proud credit to Mac Hold Onto Your Love Back To Louisiana Love The One You're With - Everyday People - Fire on the Bayou Main Street What's Right is Right Nineteen New York State of Mind *thanks to soulman22, THN, jonibug, Marybeth, ATF SOUL PATROL MEMORIES: credit to ATF1. You're the best. credit to sara8382 credit to Tricia at the Bikini Beach Bar 7/20/13 credit to Calvin Standfield at the Bikini Beach Bar 7/20/134. jonibug Guess I should mention that they had chairs in the Blue Martini last night....something they should have done Thursday night and I'm sure there would have been a lot more people there. Last night the room was nearly full....of course, weekends are always more crowded at Casinos, etc. All three shows we saw were great....no "new" music .... Taylor's guitar playing is very good now and because there was just the three of them, you could actually HEAR him playing! Nice!!! 5. Cheri Fun times in Atlantic City @taylorhicks ! 2 awesome Taylor shows in 1 day. I really enjoyed talking to you after the shows too: 6. Outtake from THN's review : For full article & photos click here: http://ontapblog.wordpress.com/2013/07/21/taylor-hicks-in-atlantic-city-review-preview-with-photos-video/ The audience was engaged early in both sets by Taylor’s relaxed manner and comfortable chatter about his American Idol run and post Idol experience. 7. Linda T Regarding DIMYP, no "strategy" involved. During the middle of the show while Taylor was talking on stage, the guy behind me yelled out "Do the Proud Song!!!" LOL -- he couldn't quite come up with the name. Taylor acknowledged him and said not just yet but he would do it. And he did.....as his tag in the middle of 7 MB 8. Coder The music this pass weekend was the best and I feel it is the best shows I've ever seen Taylor perform. He was full of energy and talking to the crowds. He looked happy and repeatedly said "And It Is Free". Lucky for all of us to see Taylor perform "free"! credit to Coder credit to Tammy Krebs credit to Kelsey Lawn redit to Louise Uznanski credit to Allison Guy photographing his Navy shirt while Taylor sings Nineteen 9.
