Taylor Hicks

American Idol winner performs at Harrah's

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

Taylor Hicks isn’t the kind of guy who waits for things to happen or makes excuses when life throws him a curve ball. Even if his recording studio was in his kitchen and he had to hand deliver copies of his self-produced, handmade albums door-to-door to get his music out, he’d do it. If he had to stick CDs in the windshield wipers of every car in the Walmart parking lot, he’d do that, too.

But Taylor Hicks had a Plan B. He knew that being in the right place at the right time would jump-start his career in a big way. So when opportunity came knocking, Hicks not only opened the door, he kicked it in.

His personal twist of fate came when he was in New Orleans to audition for "American Idol," the night before Hurricane Katrina hit on August 29, 2005. With his flight cancelled, he was given a free airplane voucher. Taylor quickly used the ticket to travel to Las Vegas, where “American Idol” auditions were also being held.

Millions of Americans watched that Plan B unfold on national TV in 2006—week after week—as Hicks became the main storyline of season five of “American Idol.” They saw this Alabama boy pour his heart and soul into every song he performed. He was a little different than the typical “idol”. He had a little age and experience under his belt and he knew how to play to a crowd—both those in the audience and those watching at home.

From the start, Hicks’ material on the mega-hit show set him apart, with a unique take on Southern soul, R&B, country and blues—songs he was more than a little familiar with.

Not only did Hicks win, he made television history when audiences made the finale of that season of “American Idol” one of the most watched TV programs of the decade. People who had never voted for a contestant before, voted for Hicks. It was Hicks’ stage that evening and his world hasn’t stopped spinning since.

Less than three weeks after Hicks’ “Idol” win, his debut single, “Do I Make You Proud,” entered at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, Pop 100 and Single Sales charts, with first-week sales over 190,000 units.

Since then, Hicks’ self-titled album, released in 2006, was certified platinum, debuting in the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200.

Hicks has also performed with artists like Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg, Gladys Knight, Earth Wind and Fire and The Allman Brothers.

Through his own record company, Modern Whomp Records, Hicks released his first independent album, The Distance, in 2009, which includes the popular roadhouse single, “Seven Mile Breakdown” and the soulful, “What’s Righty is Right.”

In 2009, Hicks dipped his toes into a new venue—Broadway—where he performed in the hit musical Grease. Fans urged him to visit their hometowns with the show, so he went on a national tour for 18 months visiting cities across America and Canada. Hicks was featured on Jimmy Fallon’s Blow Your Pants Off album, which took home the 2013 Grammy for Best Comedy Album.

In June 2012, Hicks began his residency at Bally's Las Vegas, bringing the Alabama-flavored roadhouse vibe to the Las Vegas Strip. A year later, he earned a year-long extension at a larger venue, Paris Las Vegas. With that contract came an exclusive commitment to perform at Caesars Entertainment properties across the country throughout the year (of which Harrah's Laughlin is one). He is currently in the studio working on his first country album.

We caught up with Taylor Hicks via a phone interview last week. Here's his take on...

•First country album
Hicks: I'm in the studio working on it now. I've done four or five songs for the record so far. There's no name as yet, but I'm writing and collecting songs now. I've got a lot of songs that I've written—quite a bank of material— but in the song world, you have to put the best songs on the record.

I'm working predominately in Nashville and I love that I'm working with a lot of great people and being in a part of that area of the South where I'm from. I love the music that comes out of here.

•Paris regular...
Hicks: I couldn't be happier with my residency at the Paris Las Vegas. It's only what every entertainer dreams about—to be a part of the landscape, the history of The Strip. It's an honor for sure. I do five shows a week. I'm off Sundays and Wednesdays. I love performing and if I could do it seven nights a week, I would. Burn out? No, not for me. I enjoy working. I love what I do and I'm blessed that I get to do it.

•Vegas stories
Hicks: Words can never tell…

•Live show...
Hicks: Obviously you have to give them songs they know, no matter what. So my show consists of songs off my records, cover songs and audience favorites from "American Idol." I have a four-piece band with me and I get to play a lot of different instruments—the organ, harmonica and guitar. "Idol" was strictly singing, so I love that I get to branch out playing with different instruments. I love to bring the harmonica out during the set.

I'm looking forward to coming back to Laughlin. I've played there before and I loved the crowds. Harrah's is a great stop on this journey of music that I've been taking

•Mastering harmonica
Hicks: Persistence—which can be said for anything—the persistence of learning and playing as much as you can.

•Harmonica idol...
Hicks: I love Delbert McClinton.

•On Al Yankovic doing a Hicks parody of "Do I Make You Proud" with "Do I Creep You Out"
Hicks: It looks like I've made it (by having Yankovich target him)…I was very amused and very honored at the same time.

•Of all the artists you've performed with, is there one particular one that stands out as your favorite?
Hicks: I think there's been a bunch of them and everyone of them have been special, but I think the most special is a tie between Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg.

•New projects
Hicks: I'm looking at TV and film roles right now. I've always got my ear to the ground for those types of things. I've got a lot on my plate right now.

•Life after "American Idol."
Hicks: I'm proof positive there is success after "Idol." It's based on reinvention. I've reinvented myself a few times—enough for people to still be interviewing me. When you do this a long time—I've been performing professionally since I was 17—and believe in your vision as I did and it materializes, as crazy as it sounds, that transition from obscurity to fame is very easy. I just knew down deep inside that it was going to happen and I was preparing very early for this to be my calling, because I believed that it was.

•Success
Hicks: I don't think you're ever prepared for all the different facets of success, but the one thing that greases that wheel is hard work. I'm probably running at about the 230 mark of shows I've done this year. I have to work that hard and I'm still earning my way. I feel like I have unfinished business in my profession. The only opportunity to create luck is to play as many shows as I can and work as hard as I can.

If you want to succeed in this business, cover all your bases first. Learn how to play your instrument(s), sing really well and perform as much as possible—and write your own stuff. I did all those things before I decided this was the career path I would take. If you haven’t covered your bases, someone else has.

Yeah, I find time for myself. Decompressing is equally important, but there is a record on the horizon so there's no rest for the weary.

NOTE: The following was Taylor Hicks' response to an interview we did with him during his last visit to Laughlin...

•Soul music...
Hicks: I was going through an emotional time as a kid—on an emotional roller coaster and that’s when I discovered soul music to be just that, a roller coaster. There were similarities in the music and in my life—I just identified with it. I was lucky to have found it—first the blues and then soul, building a foundation.

After that, I discovered Lefty Frizzell and Ray Price. At a very early age, I knew there was a reason I was digesting all this music. I don’t think too many kids around that time were listening to Ray Price. They were probably playing with Transformers or something. Maybe they thought I was a little crazy. I think I still am. You have to be a little crazy to be in the business I’m in.

2. grayhair

65 minute show. NO encore. :-(
Black shirt with red roses.
Not sold out, but pretty decent crowd.
Pretty much the standard songs and tags.
Audience mostly "mid-America" types, not a little glamorous like in Las Vegas.

3. Jen @imjustjen1974

Had a great time at the @taylorhicks show tonight in Laughlin. Great voice and very nice guy!

4. OCTaylorFan

I sat in front row center and loved every second. He moved around the stage a lot, talked a lot
more than usual, and sounded fantastic!

WoWWWWWWWW

I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Loved the variety of music.
Would have wished the performance was longer felt like I was a little teased.
All the musicians are really talented would highly recommend to anyone. Even
purchased his harmonica and he played it for us now how lucky is that!!!!

Favorite moment: When he ad libs music just rolls out of his mouth and
is so lyrical.
