By: John Tuckness

Taylor Hicks, winner of American Idol Season Five, will be bringing his Paris Las Vegas Headliner show up to Harrah’s Reno for a special exclusive limited engagement. Taylor will perform inside the legendary Sammy’s Showroom for five consecutive nights.

From the start, Taylor’s material on “American Idol” set him apart, with a unique take on southern soul, R & B, country and blues. More than 63 million votes were cast and nearly 37 million viewers tuned in to crown Hicks the Season 5 winner of “American Idol,” making it one of the most watched television events of the decade. The applause hasn’t stopped since he stepped off that stage. Less than three weeks after Hicks’ Idol win, his debut single, “Do I Make You Proud,” entered at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, Pop 100 and Single Sales charts. Coinciding with the single release, a cover story named Hicks as People Magazine’s “Hottest Bachelor of the Year.”

Hicks is no stranger to Reno as he did a week long stretch last September at Sammy's Showroom inside Harrah's Reno. The show got rave reviews from examiner.com This time around should be even better.

Heart Full of Soul: Taylor Hicks returns to Harrah's Reno

Jun. 26, 2013

http://www.rgj.com/article/20130627/ENT/306270004/Heart-Full-Soul-Taylor-Hicks-returns-Harrah-s-Reno?nclick_check=1

It was 2006 when Taylor Hicks became a star, beating Katharine McPhee to take the title of “American Idol” on season five of the popular TV show.

However, even before Hicks became a household name, he was a fairly successful musician, touring venues throughout the southeastern United States.
By the time he appeared on “American Idol,” Hicks had spent more than a decade playing concerts and club dates with stars such as James Brown, Tom Petty, Jackson Browne and Widespread Panic, among others.
Now, Hicks is bringing his talent to Reno right around the Fourth of July. The “American Idol” will take the stage Harrah’s Reno, performing five nights in Sammy’s Showroom, July 3-7.
At age 29, with his signature salt-and-pepper hair — not to mention his signature take on Southern soul, R&B, country and blues — Hicks became the oldest contestant ever to win the crown of “American Idol.”
During a phone interview with Best Bets, Hicks explained how his age and experience worked in his favor for the TV show.
“Being a little bit older definitely helped,” he said. “I had spent time performing and, you know, learning my job by playing as many places as I could, and having that experience was key.”
Besides consistently touring and performing, Hicks also had experience recording two independent albums, which were released in the years prior to his appearance on “American Idol.” The albums, “In Your Time” and “Under the Radar” were later compiled and released by Vanguard Records as “Early Works.”
On top of having more experience — and more gray hairs — than most of his fellow “American Idol” contestants, Hicks said the other factor that set him apart on the show were the song choices he made, such as Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” Stevie Wonder’s “Living for the City” and Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock.”
“You have to pick songs that a lot of people know and that people can sing to even when they’re not watching the show,” he said. “You want to keep the audience’s attention, so having songs that are really popular is a smart move.”

The combination of great songs and Hick’s vocal talents not only won him the title of “American Idol,” but also won him a huge group of loyal fans, who dubbed themselves the Soul Patrol.
“Soul Patrol is a legion of fans that I’m very blessed to have,” Hicks said. “I consider them to be a lot like Parrotheads [Jimmy Buffet fans], and I really appreciate the opportunity I had to build such an amazing fan base during the show.”
Less than three weeks after his win on “American Idol,” Hicks released his debut single, “Do I Make You Proud,” which entered at number one on Billboard’s Hot 100, Pop 100 and Single Sales charts. The hit song even generated a parody by Weird Al Yankovic, called “Do I Creep You Out.”
“Never in a million years did I think I’d get parodied by Weird Al Yankovic, but I was very appreciative of him doing that — it definitely draws attention to your song,” Hicks said. “It’s one of those things you just have to embrace, for sure.”
Around the same time Hicks’ hit single was released, a People magazine cover story named Hicks the “Hottest Bachelor of the Year.” Continuing the 2006 winning streak, Hicks’ self-titled album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and quickly went platinum.
The following year, Random House published a book by Taylor Hicks, called “Heart Full of Soul: An Inspirational Memoir About Finding Your Voice and Finding Your Way.” For his next project, Hicks performed on Broadway in 2008 and then on a national tour in 2009 as Teen Angel in the hit musical “Grease.”
Also in 2009, Hicks released a new album called “The Distance.” The record featured the singles “What’s Right Is Right” and “Seven Mile Breakdown,” the latter of which Hicks performed when he returned to the “American Idol” stage during in 2009.
“Right now, I’m working on a soulful country record in Nashville and excited to be releasing that soon,” Hicks said. “I also have a headlining residency in Las Vegas.”
The popular Las Vegas show began in 2012 at The Indigo at Bally’s Las Vegas, later moving to the larger showroom of Napoleon’s Lounge at Paris Las Vegas, where he’s the featured entertainer through 2013.
“I never thought I would be a part of the historical entertainment landscape in Las Vegas — to be part of that is a real honor,” Hicks said. “It’s very interesting, because the crowd is on tour, not you.”
However, Hicks said he’s looking forward to heading north to perform at Harrah’s Reno once again.
“I played at Harrah’s Reno about six or seven months ago, and I’m definitely looking forward to coming back,” Hicks said. “I’ll be doing some of the songs from ‘American Idol,’ some of my famous showtunes and songs off my past record.
“It should be a really great show,” he added. “I’m just really excited to out there and play again.”

American Idol winner Taylor Hicks rocks Harrah's Reno (Photos)

BY: JOHN TUCKNESS

On Wednesday July 3, 2013 American Idol Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks rocked the legendary Sammy's Showroom inside Harrah's Reno. This was the first night of five shows he's doing in Reno over the 4th of July weekend. Tickets are available at Sammy's box-office or on line at Ticketmaster.

Attendance was very good for this show, the "Soul Patrol" is very much alive and well.

Taylor Hicks is an American singer who won the fifth season of American Idol. Hicks got his start as a professional musician in his late teens and performed around the Southeastern United States for well over the span of a decade, during which he also released two independent albums. Upon winning Idol, he was signed to Arista Records, under which his self-titled major label debut was released on December 12, 2006. His energetic stage performances and influences derived from classic rock, blues, and R&B music had earned him a following of devout fans, who have been dubbed the "Soul Patrol." He performed on Broadway in 2008 and on national tour in 2009 in Grease playing Teen Angel, the role originated by Alan Paul. The new CD, The Distance, was released March 10, 2009, with the first single, "What's Right Is Right", going to AC adds January 27, 2009. The second single was confirmed to be "Seven Mile Breakdown" via his Myspace page. In May 2011, Taylor Hicks opened ORE Drink and Dine restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama’s Crestline Park. Birmingham Magazine readers voted ORE as Birmingham’s “Best New Restaurant” in the fall of 2011. ORE Drink and Dine re-opened as Saw's Juke Joint, a barbecue and live music bar, on October 30, 2012. On June 14, 2011, Taylor Hicks performed at Bama Rising: A Benefit Concert For Alabama Tornado Recovery at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center. According to Billboard, the Bama Rising benefit concert raised an estimated $2.2 million for Alabama tornado relief efforts. On August 30, 2012, Taylor Hicks performed "Takin' It to the Streets" at the closing night of the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida.

Hicks is the first Idol winner to secure a long-term residency in Las Vegas. He began his residency at Bally's Las Vegas in June 2012 and moved to a larger venue, Paris Las Vegas, in January 2013. He also plays all the Caesars Entertainment venues across the country.

Current members include, Taylor Hicks (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Brian Less (keyboards), Cody Farris (guitar) and David Keith (drums).

Hicks' set lasted over 60 minutes and went like this,

"Country Living", "Takin' It To The Streets", "Maybe You Should", "Back To Louisiana", "In the Ghetto". "Nineteen", "Gonna Move" and "Seven Mile Breakdown".

Hicks had the crowd of over 300 dancing in the isle's. He told many great stories about his time on American Idol. One in particular was when he talked about judge Simon Cowell, Hicks said that during commercial breaks while taping the show he and Cowell would go out back and smoke Kools. On the night they were doing Elvis songs, Cowell suggested that he do, In the Ghetto, Hicks ended up doing the song and it turned out to be one of his biggest hits. He also said when a judge tells you to do a song, especially Simon Cowell, you do it.

There was also a fan meet & greet before the show, Hicks took photo's, signed autographs and chatted to everyone there. He made sure he got the chance to talk to everyone, a very classy guy indeed.

This is the second time this examiner has seen the show, it seems to get better each time. Be sure to catch the show while Hicks is in town, you won't be disappointed.

A great time was had by all.

Sammy's Showroom inside Harrah's in downtown Reno is a very nice place to see a show, great views, sound and lighting. All of the greats have played there over the years, including Taylor Hicks. It is a very intimate venue with not a bad seat in the house. If you really want to "see" a show, then Sammy's Showroom is the place to go !!!

As with all this examiners reviews and feature stories, "The Photos Are What It's All About", so check out the photo slideshow and enjoy the show.

The concert was awesome. If there was one thing I would recommend it would be to have the concert last longer, it was only an hour long.
