A very nice blog entry explaining "Early Works" to a tee.

Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue

Taylor Hicks to release Early Works

Taylor Hicks will be releasing a CD of his early works August 19, 2008.

The track list is comprised of ten original songs and two covers from his first two independently recorded albums, In Your Time (1997) and Under the Radar (2005).

Since Taylor appeared on American Idol in 2006, fans have been driving prices for copies of the long out of print In Your Time to astronomical levels on eBay. With an extremely limited supply and huge demand, copies sometimes sold for over $500. Because of that market, fakes sold by bootleggers soon made up the majority of In Your Time CDs sold on eBay. Despite the risk, fans still bought, wanting to have a piece of history and to own their own copy Taylor’s first album of original songs and his famous cover of “Georgia”. Taylor Hicks did make a few more copies of In Your Time that were sold during his 2007 concert tour and through his fan website, but for most of America this is still an undiscovered treasure.

Under The Radar was released in 2005. Taylor was working his ass off to get this album some attention when American Idol came knocking, and he suddenly found himself with as much attention as he could handle. Some fans who had discovered him on AI searched the internet for info about Taylor found that this album could be purchased from exactly one small independent record store in Birmingham, Alabama. And they did purchase it, by phone, by mail, or by internet. The songs from this album became well known and well loved to the few who knew about it. But again, for most of America, this album and these songs remained unknown.

Fans know that these songs have come a long way since these albums were recorded. Anyone who has been to see a Taylor show over the last few years probably knows the evolved forms of these songs better than the originals. We are now used to the dynamic live versions, jazzed up or slowed down, sprinkled with tags and harmonica riffs. But the original versions have a special place in our hearts.

August 19 the rest of America will have a chance to hear and enjoy Taylor’s musical past. I think they might be surprised by what they hear.

It shouldn’t take the new fans long to catch up with the rest of us.

This is a nice look back at these two original albums. I remember that Laser's Edge had a FEW of In Your Time right after Idol and I ALMOST bought one...I KNEW I would regret it if I didn't. Well, now, I do...not for the monetary value...I'd just like to have an original one.

I have both. I purchased 'Under The Radar' from Laser's Edge & 'In Your Time' at the Portland, Oregon concert. The plus on the latter is Taylor's autograph is on it & now the jacket adourns my bookshelf & a couple of sweet Soul Patrollers prop it up. Nice Addition! ;wh
Oh Yeah ~ I've also pre-ordered the 'Early Works' & can't wait for it's arrival! :thumbsup

America is starting to discover Mr. Hicks, I believe!

I did buy a signed "In Your Time" at one of the concerts...but it's not original.
I've made my Amazon order for Early Works and remembered a Barnes & Noble gift card I have...I think more Early Works would be a good purchase with that!

I’m In A Taylor Hicks State Of Mind

.... Now, Taylor Hicks bluesy style may not appeal to all the listeners, but I loved it. However, what I loved even more so was his phenomenal vocal artistry. Additionally, his voice sounded extremely focused and resonant - check out the circular mouth and relaxed jaw and you will get what I mean.

He focuses and projects his voice so well, highlighting the progression of his technical skills. Hopefully, this will be an ongoing presence in his future performances, as it will certainly stimulate him to increase the dynamic possibilities of his vocal gifts.

I loved when he mentioned the “circular breathing” element in reference to his saxaphonist - looks like Taylor is becoming very astute in the benefits of diaphragmatic breathing.

Wow, what a great technical analysis of Taylor's singing.
This lady knows her stuff and to hear her praising Taylor this way is compelling. :music note
Wonderful find, mouser.

Hey there's a rumor that on the Early Works CD is a new version of Georgia that's not on any of his other albums. Anyone know if there is any truth to that?

Here's the quote I'm referring to:

Quote:

Taylor Hicks is releasing a compilation CD, Early Works, due out August 11th. The CD will include songs from In Your Time and Under the Radar, plus a version of “Georgia” that was not included on any other previously-released Hicks CD.

I got that info from here: http://www.foxesonidol.com/cgi-bin/ae.pl?mode=1&article=article2451.art&page=1

Also saw that Lubiana but my interpretation is: the author of this article got the date of the release incorrect, so I am assuming that she also got the Georgia information incorrect. Perhaps she was given the assignment by her "editors" to write something on Taylor and she did, not really knowing what she was talking about. This happens all the time and is frustrating because it makes you wonder what to believe from the press .
Because Billy Earl McClellands name is attached to the track list and he is part of the original track list, I am inclined to think the song is the same minus the rough cuts that were due to bad production on "In Your Time".

Just my thoughts................... I just think this writer lacks facts but wrote her piece anyway. Donna Reynolds is a practiced freelancer and should be able to get her facts straight.....

Of course, I know nothing officially and anything I say is just speculating along with everyone else.

Very simple--Hannah Home BBQ-Taylor was referring to Jeff Lopez' circular breathing on the saxophone as he was singing "NY State of Mind" on May 10 of this year--his first "hint" about Broadway-the next Friday he made the announcement:

Taylor is "all over the place" vocally and musically with this song. HIs facial expressions are priceless and tell their own story; and his body language adds to the plot................. Awesome performance
