Our local news mentioned the upcoming Alabama tourism ads-they used two "older" pics of Taylor from the last time he was in the Montgomery area- Can any of you figure out what the events were? I can-cuz I was at BOTH of them-- According to the video, the new ads will be filmed this week- Hmm-June 9th-I feel a vacation day coming on- Here's the video: http://www.wsfa.com/global/Category.asp?C=151146&clipId=&topVideoCatNo=93080&topVideoCatNoB=97608&topVideoCatNoC=153813&topVideoCatNoD=92106&topVideoCatNoE=95084&clipId=4846414&topVideoCatNo=14994&autoStart=true |

I think that shirt was the Regions two years ago? The other was a charity event, I think, but I'm blank. Thanks for keeping us informed on the Alabama front of the oil spill. We look forward to seeing the ads Taylor will do. It is sometimes very hard to find the silver lining in the clouds, but it may be there. I hope the people along the Gulf Coast can find theirs. Perhaps a stronger more diverse tourism will emerge from this disaster. |

Was this news report done before or after this new ad campaign was halted. I think June 9, 2010 was the old date for Taylor to film the new ads and that was postponed. I surely hope they do one focusing on , as they said, things other than the beach. ![]() ![]() |

Well the news report appeared on both the 6 and 10PM news last night-so I am guessing that the NEW ads are being done-since BP is footing the bill for this why not use the money? The pics are: (1) Closeup during the media portion of WSFA's coverage of the Music Hall of Fame event where Taylor got his award-this was downtown at our local Civic Center- (we were there of course) (2) The golf photo was from the 2007 Navistar LPGA Golf Tourney in Prattville, Alabama-(15 miles north of here)-again Jazzy and I trudged the course with him- That's the day I realized how GOOD teal looked on Taylor-and came up with the colors for the MSP-(do you blame me???!!!) But the point is is that Taylor is trying to help as best he can-which is part of his nature-and why we are fans! |

I am glad to hear that the ad will be done. There are so many things to see in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida that do NOT require going to the beach.................... highlighting those attractions will hopefully help the tourist trade this summer and fall............ According to an article in the Times Daily.com , Taylor has already filmed several different commericals and the emphasis will be determined by the conditions of the beaches. http://www.timesdaily.com/article/20100606/NEWS/100609844?Title=Study-looks-at-impact-of-oil-spill-on-Alabama American Idol winner Taylor Hicks, a Birmingham native, volunteered to help, according to Sentell. He added that Hicks shot several commercials to air, depending on beach conditions. |

I'm not surprised that Taylor offered to help out with the commercials. He seems to always be very supportive of the people in his home state. Never forgetting where you came from is a very grounding trait. |

An article posted today , June 6, 2010 states that these ads should begin airing in TWO WEEKS. Note that BP gave the Department of Tourism 15 million dollars to make these commericals. They're not popping up anymore now that oil is hitting the shore and officials are advising folks to stay out of the water. "Out of an abundance of caution we're taking these actions to try to protect people's health," says Alabama State Health Officer, Dr. Don Williamson. But that doesn't mean the state's efforts to get you to the gulf are stopping. "There's a lot of things to do when you go to the gulf coast that don't involve going into the water," says Lee Sentell, Director of the Alabama Tourism Department. He says despite the bad news of oil washing onto the shores, the beach is still a hot spot. "Practically every hotel or condo has a nice swimming pool, there are nice restaurants, there's a lot of great seafood, there's great shopping." New television ads coming out in a couple weeks will feature celebrities like Taylor Hicks and Jimmy Buffet's sister--who owns a restaurant on the gulf coast. They'll encourage people to see what the area has to offer out of the water. It's an effort to keep tourism dollars flowing in to Alabama. "They're going to be very candid and acknowledging that we have some challenges right now," says Sentell. BP gave the department $15 million dollars--some of which will go to pay for the new ads. They also gave money to the other gulf coast states. While he expects a 20% decrease of folks coming to the beach he hopes the advertising will help. But tourists are on the fence especially since getting in the water is out of the question. "If you can't play in the sand and the surf, stay at home and spend your money locally," says Kyle Glover. "You don't want to drive three and a half hours if you can't really get on the beach," says Nicole Esco. Sentell hopes the ads will serve a dual purpose. First, to simply get folks to the beach. Secondly, encourage them to help support the restaurant and shopping industries hit hardest by the oil spill. Sentell says the ads will cost roughly $200,000 dollars to produce. They should be airing within the next two weeks. KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN OBG. |
