Dead horse needs to be beaten repeatedly; Correcting an erroneous report by the media

I just posted this at the NFF site, in response to the recent article/interview by the Ohio paper (May 12th, 2010). I feel very strongly about this, particularly at this juncture in our boy's career. I'll bring the link over separately, if y'all need it. Thanks!

I really hate to beat a dead horse but obviously, it needs to be beaten. I left a comment at the site to this effect:

Thank you so much for this great interview/article on Mr. Hicks. I feel compelled, however, to point out an error. Arista Records did not drop Mr. Hicks. The separation was mutually agreed upon. The label itself rushed to correct this error publicly, after Entertainment Tonight had erroneously reported it as a "drop." Thank you for letting me correct this. I'll add that if any of your readers want great, classic music, real music made in the human heart & soul, they should check out Taylor Hicks' music in stores & online (Target, Wal-Mart, amazon.com, iTunes, etc.).

In my heart of hearts, as Taylor goes forward, I think we all need to correct this falsehood that Taylor was dropped. People read this tripe and believe it, because reporters fail to do their homework. We need to right these wrongs. Don your suit of armor and ride into battle for our boy ... or at least, correct these stupid errors. Please.

Here is the link, friends, to that article/interview. You have to register at the site, and it's a pain in the butt to keep doing this for every article, but Taylor's worth it:

I also become disturbed when I see something in print about how Taylor was 'dropped' by Arista. It is obvious, that some interviewers are more interested in what will ignite the readers ~ draw their attention; just to complete their assignment.
And then, there are those who just want to keep 'stirring the pot', whether it be true or false.
People can be funny creatures. :duh

Thanks, Kaitlin, for doing battle for Taylor! You are right. It is always assumed that a label "drops" an artist when it may well be mutual, as he and Arista announced.

What our favorite music blogger says is that big labels are dead and often points out the advantages of independent labels. Taylor told an interviewer recently that (I am paraphrasing) it is relative...for a big label you must sell x number of albums to make x amount. For your own label you only have to sell x number of albums to make the same x amount. He has a much bigger piece of the pie! Which I believe he has also said. (paraphrasing again!)

He also has total control! Many artists are going in this direction. Our artist has the wherewithall and acumen to do it all himself. Bravo for Taylor!

You gals rock, Gr8tful & san! I was born with a suspicious nature. I do wonder why Entertainment dropped that lie ... what was that motivation, assuming it was not pure half-assed reporting, hmmm ... and then it took the label a full week to correct it publicly.

Taylor is to be commended and respected mightily for staying true to the music and taking the harder route to get there. For not compromising or allowing himself to be pimped, as so many so-called artists have done.

I have been reading this post for sometime wondering if I should reply to it or not.....all I have to say is I totally agree with the fact that Taylor seems to be the name that is dropped when it comes to dissing Idols. Not only with information, that isn't totally accurate but also with false opinions that the author twists so it sounds factual. However, this is nothing new and has been going on forever and will continue....It frustrates me that this continues to happen to Taylor and breaks my heart to his name dragged through the mud over and over again, I used to write these so called writers to correct the information, and found out that in most cases it just added to the fire, because they would continue to bash him. So, instead of ending up in a back and fourth email argument, I have decided not to read the articles that portray Taylor falsely. I talked to a friend of mine who works for a certain Internet company, and was told that they target certain topics and names that have a big response/search online. They do this to get people to read the article and bring people to their sight. So as much as it kills me not to respond, I am happy to see that others are taking the time to correct this misprints, however, it really doesn't solve the problem unless the author is 'man/woman enough to print a retraction.' Just imagine how Taylor, his family, and close friends feel when they read this crap.......I am sure it hurts and I am sure they wish they could get the word out, however, Taylor as a person has stayed very true to himself and those that love him as a musician and a person know the real truth and we have to support and back him 100%. I know, I know what you are thinking........I am telling you not to support these so called Taylor basher writers and try and correct them, but in the end I am telling you we need to support Taylor 100%. I guess what I am saying is use your best judgment when replying to an article......some are honest mistakes while others are just said to be mean (TMZ for example)......I hope no one takes this the wrong way.....I am truly a die hard Taylor fan and will support Taylor anyway I can always and forever........

Thanks for your reply, hootiegal. To tell you the truth, I used to respond to every single negative thing and/or outright lie I'd read about Taylor in the beginning. At that time, the editor of one of the papers that had printed such drivel responded to me, asking if he could print my rebuttal. But he did it in such a way that made me think, "You're only looking to stir the pot with my response." So I let him stew in his own pot. :lm I didn't give my permission to reprint my words, and from that day on, I've done as you've suggested, which is to pick my battles.

I picked a huge one last year, and well deserved, with the moderators of a certain fan board whose initials are BB. Let me rephrase that. They picked the fight, with Taylor and his musician friends; I just finished it. The lies told about me in return were simply that, lies. I can and will take it on the chin for Taylor. I see red when he's disrespected.

I answered the author in question (re this thread) because he made the statement about the label dropping Taylor. This statement says a lot about him as an artist, IMO, and it's false. It's such a small statement and yet it speaks volumes. What galls me is why the label took a full week to correct this publicly. If they'd corrected it immediately, there would not be this erroneous assumption floating around out there, still.

I'm more protective of Taylor Hicks than I have ever been of any other human being. And anyone who really knows me will tell you that, if justified, I will jump to their defense and crush the aggressor. Why I feel this way about Taylor, even I don't know. I just do; my gut tells me I must protect him, and so, I do, in my own small way. I'll continue to do as you've so wisely suggested and as we've both learned: to pick and choose our battles. This is one battle for which I'll don the suit of armor. Someone hand me my joust. :-)
