Nov 9, 2009 11:45 am US/Central Q&A With Grease's Sandy: Do Blondes Have More Fun?By Sara Boyd
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ―

Though she may not come out and say it, based on Lauren Ashley Zakrin's first two stage production roles, it seems blondes just might have more fun.

Zakrin, who's starring as Sandy in the national tour of "Grease" -- which heads to the Orpheum Theatre Nov. 18 -- just finished her role as the understudy for Elle Woods in the first national tour of "Legally Blonde the Musical."

Before that, she competed with other musically gifted blondes on MTV's "Legally Blonde the Musical: The Search for Elle Woods."

Zakrin took a few moments out of her Sandra Dee preparations to talk about everything from being a pink-clad lawyer to performing with "American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks.

WCCO: What is it like playing Sandy in "Grease" the musical?

Zakrin: Playing Sandy in Grease is an absolute blast. I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to explore a new character with such charm and innocence. I am really enjoying myself.

WCCO: You were a finalist on MTV's "Legally Blonde the Musical: The Search for Elle Woods." What was that experience like for you?

Zakrin: Being on the reality TV show was one of the most challenging yet educational experiences of my life. At the time, I was very young and inexperienced, so it helped me to mature into a young woman and grow as a performer. As stressful and terrifying as it was, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I wouldn't be where I am today without it.

WCCO: You appeared as Elle Woods more than 60 times during the first national tour. What is the best part about being on stage? The most nerve-wrecking?

Zakrin: It is such a blessing to be given the opportunity to take such a difficult character at a young age, and be able to embrace it and make it my own. I learned so much about comedy, emotion and connecting with your fellow actors by having a hands-on education with Elle Woods. The only part that always made me nervous was the fact that Elle doesn't get a bathroom break during the whole show. Let's just say I have an itty bitty bladder!

WCCO: A lot of people are the most familiar with "Grease" the movie. How does "Grease" the musical compare? How is it different?

Zakrin: Well our production of Grease is based off the original stage production storyline, with a few of the movie songs thrown in. Either way, if you loved the movie, you will definitely have a blast with us.

WCCO: What is one thing you've learned about performing in a Broadway musical?

Zakrin: In the past two years I have learned so much about discipline and dedication to your craft. Being a stage actor requires so much focus and passion, and it has been so wonderful finding my path as a performer on stage.

WCCO: Do you have any pre-performance rituals?

Zakrin: Before just about every show, I plug in my humidifier, do some vocal warm ups and drink my special concoction of water, apple juice and honey. And before I get on stage, I always pop in a cinnamon Listerine strip.

WCCO: "American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks is appearing in a few of the shows. What's he like to work with?

Zakrin: He is great! He really brings a fresh and unique energy to the show and he is very funny backstage.
WCCO: Who's the better blonde? Elle Woods or Sandy Dumbrowski?

Zakrin: Well, Elle Woods certainly has a better hair style! But of course the two characters are so drastically different, there really is no comparison. They are both so much fun.

WCCO: What would be your dream role in any musical -- past or present?

Zakrin: Right now I am looking forward to the day that I get to originate my own character in a new show. Fingers crossed!
