Birmingham's 'American Idol' winner Taylor Hicks making his way on Broadway

By Alec Harvey -- The Birmingham News The Birmingham News

Taylor Hicks hasn't had a home since he left his Southside apartment in 2006 to compete on "American Idol." "I have a downstairs den," he says of visiting family in Hoover. "All of my stuff is in a storage unit."

Taylor Hicks is still amazed at what's happened to his life.

And he's not talking about going from virtual obscurity to winning "American Idol" in 2006 or putting out two CDs -- "Taylor Hicks" and this year's "The Distance."

Now, sitting at an outdoor table at Vestavia Hills' Diplomat Deli, Hicks is talking about his stint on Broadway and on tour as Teen Angel in "Grease."

More on Hicks A few more tidbits from Taylor Hicks:

• On his post- "Grease" life: "It's up in the air," he says. "I do want to write another record ... but if the right role comes along, I'll take a look at it."

• On "American Idol": "I do follow it. I keep up with it. I like it."

• On Paula Abdul not returning as a judge:"I think Paula brought some great entertainment value to the show," he says before pausing and grinning. "And that's all I'm going to say about that."

• On "Idol Rewind," a behind-the-scenes show that this year looks at Hicks' season: "We all got back together to do it," he says. "I feel like it was just yesterday."

• On his "Idol" season-mates, which included Chris Daughtry, Kellie Pickler, Ace Young and Katharine McPhee: "I text everyone from that season," he says, adding with a laugh, "That's my favorite season."

• On his work ethic: "I've done 450 ('Grease') shows since June of last year," Hicks says. "I've been out sick twice."

• On his fans: "I get humbled every night," he says. "It's not how many records you sell or how many shows you do. It's about how many lives you can touch."

• On the "Grease" opening night party at Rogue Tavern: "I think the cast is going to get a big ol' dose of Birmingham music with Frankie Velvet and the Veltones."
"I never thought in a million years that I'd be putting on makeup every day for one-and-a-half years," says Hicks, who plays Teen Angel in the national tour of "Grease," which opens in Birmingham Tuesday.
It's happened so much, the singer known for his gray locks jokes that he's pre-conditioned to flinch around showtime, even on off days, when no one is fiddling with his hair.

Hicks has owned the role of Teen Angel -- who urges beauty school dropout Frenchy to go back to high school -- since joining the musical's Broadway cast in June 2008. He's headlined the tour since it started in December and is contracted through June 2010.

In "Grease," Hicks is able to perform a single from "The Distance," and he's played in clubs along the tour route, adding to his legions of fans known as the Soul Patrol.

"The 'Grease' fans and the 'American idol' fans, they're kind of one and the same," he says. "A lot of 'Idol' fans are 'Grease' fans."

Hicks says his "Grease" stint is a "small step toward TV and film acting."

"I'm still learning," he says. "This is perfect, because it's kind of a concert and a Broadway show all in one."

Not surprisingly, Hicks got his acting start -- as he did his music start -- in Birmingham.

"The only two plays I'd been in before were Christmas plays," he says. "I played Santa Claus both times."

His Santa Claus days behind him, Hicks is enjoying the smallish but memorable role as Teen Angel, played by pop star Frankie Avalon in the film version of "Grease." Hicks also appears and performs during the curtain call, and he stays to sell and sign copies of "The Distance."

"By the time the tour is over, we'll have hoped to hand-deliver 40,000 records to people all over the country," Hicks says. "Those people don't forget that."

;wh Great article, OBG!!! I loved it!! It's hard to believe that Taylor's done 450 Grease performances since June of last year ~~ especially in addition to all the other appearances and performances he is doing at the same time!!

Wow! Taylor must have a really strong constitution and tons of stamina ~~ I pray the Lord watches over him and grants him continued success, happiness and robust health! :ld

Way To Go, Taylor!! :ht
