Newark Idol winners named• July 27, 2009 A nine - year old girl from Elk Neck Elementary School and a 17- year old St Marks High School student each won their age group in the 3rd annual Newark Idol competition hosted at the Holy Family Church Summerfest 2009. Over 20 contestants performed during the semi-finals held on Friday, July 10 at the annual carnival held on the grounds of Holy Family Church on Chestnut Hill Road. Performing live in front of a packed crowd each contestant sang their hearts out to earn a spot in the finals. The singers were judged by four judges and their scores were combined with the audience vote. Rather than calling in as they do on American Idol people voted by casting a dollar – a – vote into the contestant’s voting container. Money raised goes toward the general fund of the Holy Family Catholic Church. During the Finals held on Sunday evening the singers performed again in front of the cheering Summerfest audience. Starting with a clean slate the singers were ranked by the judges and their scores were combined with the money earned that night in the audience dollar vote. Michelle Lecza won the under the age of 14 grouping with her performance of Memory from the Broadway show “Cats”. This was her third year competing and her first win. Michelle said she’d like to be a professional singer or an actress. “I just like to sing for fun”, Michelle says. Her favorite singers are Gretchen Wilson and Taylor Hicks. Ian Johnstone literally ran out of the kitchen to sing during the semi finals since he was a volunteer working in the food tent. Ian had many fans from St Marks High School who cheered him on. Ian made it to the Finals, but changed his semi final song Back to School to Peace Train for his Sunday performance. He also played guitar while he sang. Each winner received a check for $500 and was declared this year’s Newark Idol. http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20090727/COMMUNITIES0701/90727016 |

So you were 14 when you first saw Taylor? I have to admire your taste in music, but I am sure that your tastes are eclectic. I have always wondered why American artists have been internationally accepted into the musical community, while , we in the States, know very little about music from other countries. It is better now that the internet has made our world "smaller", but I still am not aware of "music stars" from other countries. Does New Zealand have any groups or individuals that are just adored in that country? Do you have copies of Taylor's 5 CD's ( In Your Time, Under The Radar, Taylor Hicks , Early Works and The Distance).?? |
