Central Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85004 602-252-8848 Every major city, and most minor ones, have museums. The Heard Museum is unique, however, not only in the exhibits that are displayed, but the style and grace with which it displays them. I never tire of visiting the Heard Museum, with its more than 32,000 pieces of cultural and fine art. There are permanent exhibits, like the famous Barry Goldwater collection of Kachina Dolls, as well as special exhibit year-round. Some of the special annual events include the World Championship Hoop Dance Contest which is held each February, and the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market each March 2. - Wazee's in Peoria ![]() 9750 W. Peoria Ave. Peoria Az, 85345 (623) 972-2667 Don't let the exterior stop you from going inside. Wazee's is located in one of our many deserted strip malls, and there is no permanent signage on the building yet. When you go inside, though, you'll get a much different feel. The huge open spaces are for future entertainment, like a bounce area for little kids. The main attraction right now is, of course, laser tag. It's a colorful black-light setup with fog and booming music. There are two levels, and up to 36 people can play at a time. Bring or group, or go with your family. No one gets hurt, no one gets messy. After your laser tag session have some fun with 9 holes of cosmic golf. Again, glow-in-the-dark equipment and black-lighting make this a unique course -- I believe it's the only cosmic miniature golf in the area. Of course, there are the video and arcade games, a redemption center and snack bar. The owner tells me that just last night they brought in Makoto, and that it was a big hit. What is Makoto? The manufacturer describes it as "a cross between “Whack-A-Mole” and “Simon.” You stand in a triangular arena where there are three towers, and you try to score points by hitting targets on the towers. It's fun, and -- don't tell the kids -- it is actually good for both physical and mental fitness. I can't wait to try it! It's going to be take-your-breath-away hot on Saturday. Wazee's would be a cool place to spend the day, and a cool way to support a new local, family-owned business. MEDIA AND REVIEWS: 1. Arizona Living 'Grease' breathes new life into Hicks' career by Randy Cordova - Oct. 19, 2009 12:00 AM The Arizona Republic Taylor Hicks took over the role of Teen Angel in "Grease" on Broadway in 2008. Then he went on the national tour, which is where you'll find him through June. The 33-year-old "American Idol" winner is pleased with the role, which has been reshaped for his personality. Don't think crooning and Frankie Avalon; instead, this Teen Angel plays the mouth organ and sings with a bluesy Alabama soul. Hicks even does a number at the end, offering a tune from his current disc, "The Distance." The hard-working performer called - on his birthday, no less - to talk up the show. Question: How are you enjoying musical theater? Answer: I'm loving it. It's the best of both worlds. I get to perform as Teen Angel and as a singer-songwriter at the end of the show. Q: It's such a different take on the role. Most people think of someone like Frankie Avalon in the role. A: I knew I didn't want to copy anybody else in the role. I wanted to make sure it was signature. Q: How did you do that? A: I wanted to make sure that Frenchy went back to high school. And then I made it more rock and roll. It's kind of like he's descending from Rock and Roll Heaven now. Then I have the harmonica and the R&B horn lines. It's like the role was tailor-made for me. Q: After your own gigs where you do what you want onstage, is it hard doing the exact same thing night after night? A: As a working entertainer, steady work is always a good thing (laughing). This is just a wonderful way to reinvigorate the fan base and to travel the country and let people see me in a different light. That's what makes the show appealing. Q: Do you see more acting coming your way? A: I think if the right role came along, I would definitely think about it. Another Broadway role, or TV or film. Teen Angel - this is the perfect role for me. I get to understand acting from kind of a firsthand experience. This role fits my personality. Straying too far from your personality is where you get into trouble. Q: So many Idols have turned to theater. Is it a natural fit? A: It is a great springboard to get into theater. It is also kind of the go-between acting and full-on acting. People who come off the show obviously have musical chops. Then being in a visual medium, doing things like choreography . . . I think Broadway is the next step. http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/arizonaliving/articles/2009/10/19/20091019hicks1019side.html SOUL PATROL MEMORIES: 1.
