Since 1926, Proctor's Theatre, a historic, beautifully restored theatre located in the heart of downtown, has presented the very best in entertainment for New York's Capital Region. Proctor's Theatre is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally built as a vaudeville house, Proctor's Theatre has seen its stage graced by such legendary performers as comedians Red Skelton, George Burns and Gracie Allen, magicians Harry Blackstone Sr. & Jr., and bandleaders Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Glenn Miller.

The Mainstage is a beautifully restored historic theatre listed on the National Register of Historic Places and located in the heart of downtown Schenectady. As the premiere performing arts facility in New York State's Capital Region, The Mainstage presents the very best in entertainment. Known for presenting the national Broadway touring productions, Proctors also presents popular performers, world-class singers, side-splitting comedians, electrifying dance programs, world reknown classical productions, including opera and symphony orchestras, plus family and children's programming.

The early 1900s were a time of great prosperity in Schenectady. Theatre magnate Frederick Francis Proctor opened his first theater in Schenectady in 1912, near the Erie Canal. As the city thrived, Proctor sought to build a larger, more magnificent theater to accommodate and entertain the growing audiences. On April 14, 1925, ground was broken for the "new" Proctor's Theatre at its present site.

Throughout the 1930's and 40's, the city and the theater business thrived, as the Golden Age of movies and the Big Band Era brought record numbers of people out to the shows. After World War II, the fortunes of both the city and the Theatre declined. Television became increasing popular (and available), and the movie industry and Proctors suffered. By the 1970s the Theatre was taken over by the city, and was closed for unpaid taxes. Proctor's seemed destined to go the way of so many of its contemporaries - destroyed by the wrecking ball. But a group of concerned citizens formed the Arts Center and Theatre of Schenectady to save the Theatre from destruction, and purchased the Theatre from the city for the sum of $1 in 1979. After some much-needed renovations, the Theatre reopened with a sold-out performance by magician Harry Blackstone, Jr. , whose father had played at the Theatre several decades earlier. In 2003 Proctors embarked on an exciting new $30 million expansion.

'Grease' role comes naturally to 'American Idol' winner

By MICHAEL ECK, Special to the Times Union
: Thursday, January 21, 2010

Gray-haired "American Idol" star Taylor Hicks was only 2 years old when the classic film version of "Grease," starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, was released in theaters.

He does remember, though, as a young musician, singing the title song and "You're The One That I Want" in bars and at weddings.

Now Hicks is starring in a touring version of the 2007 Broadway "Grease" revival, which actually -- for the first time -- fuses songs from both the original show and the film into one live production.

Hicks isn't playing Danny Zuko, though. He's Frankie Avalon rather than John Travolta, meaning that he plays Teen Angel, the benevolent soul -- a "rock and roll father figure" as Hicks put it -- who tries to help Frenchy with her high school predicaments ("Beauty School Dropout").

Hicks says that Broadway wasn't in his original world-domination plan, but he also says he won't soon forget the June night in 2008 when he took his first bow on the Great White Way.

"That was an amazing experience. I'll never forget it. It's one of those things that will always live on in your mind."

Hicks says his notoriously rabid fans, "The Soul Patrol," have been very supportive of his foray into theater, and he also offers them a treat at all performances of "Grease."

"I actually perform a song as part of each encore, so the show does have a concert feel at the end as a bonus."

In addition to his road gig with "Grease," Hicks is also pushing a new album, "The Distance." It's the first on his own Modern Whomp label.

Hicks, unlike most "American Idol" contestants, was actually a professional musician before he became an "Idol." He says the move from being on a major label to having his own imprint is freeing, and he hopes to one day include other artists ion his roster.

"Grease" opens at Proctors on Tuesday and runs through Jan. 31.

2. Marissa from Fly 92

Last night and through the weekend, the Broadway musical, “Grease,” is at Proctor’s Theater in Schenectady. I had the opportunity to see it last night with some peeps and it was just as good, if not better than when I saw it in NYC back in’08.------

-----Taylor Hicks is the “Teen Angel.” Widely promoted as the “star” of the show…he doesn’t come out until halfway through the play, after the intermission. But, when that ice cream cone opened, he definitely hammed it up. “Frenchie” even commented, “ohhhh…I totally voted for you!!!” in her high pitched squeak.

----After all was said and done, we had the opportunity to get backstage ------. It’s always cool to see the set up close and personal. I mean, I could’ve hopped in the giant ice cream cone, but I held back. But, it is fun to know that since Taylor Hicks is kinda chillin’ in that thing 5 minutes before he actually appears to the crowd, he’s making phone calls.
