Nice review OBG. I enjoy The Distance ( song ) , so I am not sure what you meant by , "Beginning with the Springsteen styled title song "The Distance" . Certainly it is not the voice ; as Taylor's is a joy to listen to and Springsteen's, not so much, for me. Also not being a Springsteen fan, I am not conversant with his style so would love to know what you meant by this. I am ever learning about music from folks like you who seem to take pleasure in many different artists performances. IT IS DEFINITELY THE VOICE !!!! |

Ok-I meant stylistically. I had heard Taylor mention in some interview that "The Distance" (the song) was kinda a "Born in the USA" style-meaning Springsteen-I THINK! |

I'm with you Mouser - don't get the Springsteen connection - I guess if Taylor said it then that was the style he was going for. JMO but I can only hope he doesn't channel BS, he is not my favorite rocker at all! ??Question?? - Does anyone else think MYS is country? I do - right from the first time I heard it. A lot of people think it is AC - and admittedly not being a country music listener my opinion may not be accurate. It's sounds like a heart breakin', losing sleep, she's gonna leave me, tear jerkin' ballad. That sounds like country to me! BTW he does a marvelous job and if country does play it, well color me country!

Powderpuff~I think MYS kinda 'teeters' on the edge of country. It definately eats away at my heartstrings. Taylor just has a unique way ~ a 'natural' way of delivering the message within his songs. |

thanks for your reply GR8....if you listen at the very end of the song there's a strain of a steel guitar. I equate steel guitars with country. Also the plucking of acoustic guitar strings too. If some of the stuff that is played now is considered country...I just can't believe MYS wouldn't qualify. Country audiences love a good tear jerker! and he delivers with such simplicity and intensity. I know a lot of people who grew up listening to rock n roll who have now gone to country because of what has happened to with contemporary music of today. Rap, hip hop, cotton candy pop and the fact that the Britneys and Mileys and JayZs of the world dominate the music landscape, it's no wonder that there was no where much to go but country. I don't listen to a lot of country...sorry, but those corny ones get to me...but there are a few that I do like- example Tim McGraws had a hit with "Live Like You Were Dying". Now there's a song. pp edited to correct spelling - pp can't spell today! Edited by powderpuff, Apr 3 2009, 04:03 AM.

Powderpuff and Gr8fulhrt : Mike Reid who wrote "Maybe You Should" with/for Taylor lives in Nashville now , I believe. He is a country type writer. Maybe that explains the vibes you are getting.
