This reviewer is a Taylor Fan , I am guessing He/she sure has loads of favorites: http://myidol.americanidol.com/wgm4/blog/2009/05/28/taylor_hicks__the_distance_cd_breakdown This is an American Idol blog: Written by : wgm4 Taylor Hicks - The Distance: CD Breakdown Thursday, May 28, 2009, 07:49 PM PST [General] Let me start off by saying that Taylor is one cool cat. This is a great slow dance album, with some fun dance tunes. He definetly has grown and I love the R&B sound mixed in with some nice cool Jazz, that makes you feel like going out on a Friday night to the local Jazz club and listening to the sounds of the city. 1. The Distance - I love this song. He mixes some different sounds in and it blends well, and his vocals are great. The lyrics are nice as well. 2. What's Right Is Right - Great first choice as the first single, his vocals are amazing and really smooth, and this does prove why America voted for Taylor to win Idol. I love the trumpet in this song, and the lyrics are beautiful. This a song for lovers. 3. New Found Freedom - One of my favorites, and this should be the next single. It could be a big hit for him. I love the lyrics, very inspirational, and the music really makes the song as well. His vocal's are amazing and powerful. 4. Nineteen - Another one of my favorites, very sad and beautiful, with a great message behind it. I would love to see this as a single. His vocal's are beyond amazing. 5. Once Upon A Lover - I absolutly love the music arrangment and his vocals just pop and turns the song on it's head. This song makes me feel like I'm in Italy, at a sidewalk cafe, and dancing with a gorgeous italian guy. The lyrics are great as well. 6. Seven Mile Breakdown - The music adds a lot of tension and makes the song come alive, and I do think of New Orleans when I hear this song. His vocals are wow, hot. The lyrics definetly make the song. 7. May Be You Should - I love it when he sings the ballads, he has a wide range and it's nice to hear him use his full range and voice. This song is a nice cool breeze that dances like the waves crashing on shore and the feeling that sparkles like the stars in the sky. 8. Keeping it Real - Fun song to dance to, and the lyrics are catchy and current. Another one of my favorites and this could be a hit. His vocals are great. 9. I Live On A Battlefield - I love this song, this is a favorite as well. The lyrics and the arrangment really make the song. His vocal's are great and is a great mix to the music. 10. Wedding Day Blues - Ex husband done wrong so he writes a song to tell her off and get her back for all the wrong she did to him, but he still ends up getting the girl in the end. Love this song, and I love the vocals and the lyrics. 11. Woman's Got To Have It - Taylor is a great vocalist and this proves it, I'm not too sure why this was turned into a duet for him and Elliot, because Elliot can't sing and Taylor proves to be the better singer here. I do like the lyrics though, but I would have dumped Elliot for someone else. |

Here are excerpts from a review of The Distance that was fairly well received. review of The Distance by KevinTRod Jun 5, 2009 Rating: +2Title: The Distance Artist: Taylor Hicks Producer: Taylor Hicks Label: Whompa Records Parental Advisory: No If You Can Only Buy One Song Make It: Nineteen The Distance" is, to be fair, not a bad album. There are some cool blues/soul tracks in here, with highlights including the title track, "Nineteen," and "Woman's Got To Have It" (a duet with fellow Idol finalist Elliot Yamin). These tracks, while not "blow you away tracks," are at least musically interesting and thoughtful. Probably the best track on the album is "Indiscriminate Act Of Kindness," a seven minute track about kindness and how simple acts of it make all the difference in the world to some people. It's smooth, thoughtful, and great to listen to. It would have made a great opening track. Sadly it's a bonus track if you buy the album from Target, so most people won't hear it (and thus most reviews don't mention it). So if you buy this album buy it from Target (man, I'm starting to feel like an unpaid spokesman right now). Despite all my complaints about "The Distance" though I have to admit it's an interesting album if nothing else. In a day and age where artists like Hicks can't make it on the radio without singing something bubbly his new album comes off as a breath of fresh air at times. It may not be very memorable in the long run, but it has a seedy charm that will likely make it a favorite for many people. And while I didn't mention it as a highlight, it's hard not to tap your toes to his eccentric "Seven Mile Breakdown." |

Why this has come out now, I am not sure. Perhaps it was one that I missed and is now being reintroduced on the internet. Regardless.........it' a good review. http://newmusicreviews.net/taylor-hicks-the-distance-album-review/ Taylor Hicks - The Distance - Album Review November 25, 2009 by Willis If You Think You Know the Music of Taylor Hicks, “The Distance” Will Show You a New Side Taylor still knows how to deliver a song and grab the listener, as Rod Stewart once said of Taylor, “by the balls”. “The Distance” is listed as a pop album. Taylor infuses his own soulful take with his Modern Whomp Sound and in my opinion it can best be described as Americana music. The CD “The Distance” takes the listener on a journey through amazing story songs of love, humor, heartache, the effects of war and growing together as one. The title track “The Distance” is a rocking tune that will have listeners dancing to the beat. The message is clear. “We are all the same - if we build that bridge together, we will all be in a better place and the distance between us all will be gone one day. “What’s Right is Right” is the second track and is the first single available for download on iTunes. This is a soulful love song than many can relate to, capturing the old R&B sounds of the past. Taylor reminds us how wonderful it is to know that someone is there beside you through rough times as well as the good times. You can view the video at Yahoo Video Premieres. “New Found Freedom” the third track is another rocking tune that will get you on your feet. This song is a feel good song of freedom in leaving the past experiences behind while keeping your head held high. The gospel tones in this song give a very spiritual sound to the listener. “Nineteen” track four, was originally performed by Waycross, but Taylor Hicks puts his soulful voice into it to make it his own. With the recent events shaping today’s world this song will find a place in everyone’s heart. “Once Upon a Lover of Mine” track five on the CD is a song that will get you swaying and grooving to the Modern Whomp beat that has become Hicks’ trademark. “Seven Mile Break Down” track six, was written by Taylor’s close friend Wynn Christian from Spoonful James. Another toe-tapping song that Taylor delivers in his own way making you want to listen again and again. “Maybe You Should” track seven is the sad love song I have been waiting to hear from Taylor Hicks. The song is about a guy remembering how great they had it at one time but painfully aware those if she can walk away; forget what they felt and what they built together, -than maybe she should. Taylor’s voice and delivery will touch you deeply. “Keepin it Real” track eight, is Modern Whomp at its best, true and fun. The beat and the lyrics will keep you moving and smiling. Taylor does his own harmonica solo which fans have all come to love. “I Live on a Battlefield” track nine is a song was written by Paul Carrack/Nick Lowe and made famous by the Pointer Sisters. Taylor brings this song back to the forefront of music and the beat will get you dancing and wanting more. On “Wedding Day Blues” track ten, Taylor shows his true grit and humor. You will be laughing before the song comes to an end. This song would do well as a video. “Woman Gotta Have it” track eleven is the final track on the album. First sung by Bobby Womack, but in my opinion, Taylor’s voice and delivery makes this much better than the original. Hicks does an amazing collaboration with Elliott Yamin. These two soulful sounding men are amazing together and this song will be loved by both Taylor and Elliott fans and will attract new fans. So my assessment of this CD is that Taylor Hicks went out on his own, created his own label, worked his butt off looking for the right songs and nailed it. It’s clear that Taylor Hicks put his own personality and creativity into the making of this CD. Taylor has shown growth both as a musician and as a songwriter. |
