This fully functional theatre/concert hall features continental style seating . It's excellent acoustics and sound capabilities make it ideal for concerts, Broadway presentations, the Symphony, Ballet and Opera as well as a business conference or general session.

As the patriarch of the Orlando Venues entertainment facilities, the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre has seen many changes over the years as the City of Orlando flourished around its classic brick façade.

Constructed in 1926 for approximately $175,000, the facility was originally known as the Municipal Auditorium, or “Muni Aud,” to Orlando natives.
The renovation efforts in 1975 also brought a plethora of technical improvements that enhanced the internal functions and acoustics of the venue. Finally, in May of 1978, the Municipal Auditorium received its new name, Mayor Bob Carr Municipal Auditorium, in dedication to Mayor Robert Carr’s service to the City of Orlando.

Today, the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre hosts some of the largest and most popular Broadway and theatrical touring productions in the country.
The Bob Carr Centre will be replaced in 2012 by the Dr. P. Phillips Orlando Performing Arts Center, which was approved in 2007 along with the new Orlando Events Center and improvements to the Citrus Bowl. It is unknown what will happen to the Bob Carr Centre after its completion.

THEATER REVIEW

You can find fun in 'Grease'
'American Idol' winner Taylor Hicks, as Teen Angel, leads a fine supporting cast in the Broadway touring production at Orlando's Bob Carr.

August 27, 2009

Now 30-plus years old, the Broadway musical Grease still has a lot of fun left in it. Just look beyond the spotlight to find it.

It's in the way DJ Vince Fontaine (Dominic Fortuna, broadly funny) looks aghast when dowdy Miss Lynch drapes a hand on his chest. Or how Marty (Kelly Felthous, a blond Betty Boop) has to look at a string of 20 photos to find the current guy of her dreams in "Freddy, My Love."

Grease's magic is certainly not in the story. This is the cartoonish kind of show in which such few plot points that exist are either dropped — Did Frenchy go back to high school? — or dismissed in five words. "It was a false alarm," Rizzo says. After all, you don't want a teen pregnancy interfering with the hand jive.

Eric Schneider, the actor who usually plays Danny, is not appearing in this week's Orlando performances. Opening-night understudy Mark Raumaker has Danny's underlying nice-guy demeanor but lacks John Travolta's suave coolness as well as his clear falsetto.

Though it might seem unfair to compare the stage actor to the movie star, how can you not when Travolta's Danny and Olivia Newton-John's Sandy became cultural icons? This revised version of the original staged show, in fact, strives to evoke the film, cutting some of the play's songs to make room for the movie hits "Sandy," "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "You're the One That I Want."

Sandy, as written for the stage, comes across as such a priss, you might wonder what Danny sees in her. Emily Padgett is game about her stick-in-the-mud role, but doesn't generate the warmth that Newton-John emanated and never really shows the desperation to be accepted that Sandy hides under her good-girl exterior.

Taylor Hicks as Teen Angel sings his one song, "Beauty School Dropout" with comic aplomb, all raised eyebrows and goofy grins. Just in case you forgot how he made his name, a gratuitous American Idol reference is oddly tossed into the dialogue. Hicks fans will want to stay after bows: He performs his new radio single, an unusual final curtain call.
The main supporting cast brings the show its spark. Brian Crum is endearing as Doody and has a strong, lovely voice. His "Those Magic Changes" number is a knockout of music and staging. Will Blum and Bridie Carroll bring great comic timing to a very funny "Mooning."

David Ruffin puts the muscle in muscle car as auto-lovin' Kenickie. Sneering, preening yet surprisingly vulnerable at play's end, he's a force to be reckoned with. When he leads the transformation of an old clunker to a teen boy's motorized dream, the play truly finds its "Greased Lightnin.'"

2. Central Florida Future

Hicks is hopelessly devoted in Grease
Former Idol star gives goofy performance

American Idols Talyor Hicks goes back to high school not as a real student but as a performer in Grease, the first Broadway musical in the FAIRWINDS Broadway Across America Orlando 2009-2010 series. Hickss famous name earned him a third casting in the playbook, right under Eric Schneider starring as Danny, and Emily Padgett playing the role of Sandy.
Albeit his minor role of Frenchys Teen Angel, Hicks outwardly goofy and quirky representation of his character seemed to go along with the rest of the casts performances. Each performers behaviors and antics gave an individualistic touch to each character making the presentation a unique showing.
There were several humorous retorts from Rizzo, funny giggles from Frenchy, and sometimes-questionable gestures from the bad boy T-Birds that gave the entire presentation a light and carefree attitude just like back in high school.

The entire cast had bona fide accents and their voices matched the original voices from the stars in the 1978 movie with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. I was extremely impressed with the songs from Danny and Sandy, such as Summer Nights, and "Youre the One That I Want. If you closed your eyes it was almost like the movie was playing.

The stage was simplistic with minimal props. However, not much was needed when your eyes were focused on the performers and going back and forth from the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies. The choreography and dancing was satisfactory. Many times the cast members were out of sync with one another, but their smiles made up for it when it was clear they were genuinely having fun.

The costumes reeked of the 1950s. The girls wore tight, flashy, black leggings and poodle skirts and the guys wore leather jackets and rolled up blue jeans.

Overall, Grease was a lively, hand-jiving good time. It gained extra acclaim especially due to the unexpected encore performance by Taylor Hicks singing a song from his new album, which gave the musical an energetic and extraordinary ending.
