It also hosts special productions of Casa Mañana Musicals, and presents Performing Arts Fort Worth's "Hall Series", a popular array of eclectic entertainment.

It is characteristic of the classic European opera house form. An 80-foot diameter Great Dome, artfully painted by Scott and Stuart Gentling, tops the Founders Concert Theater. Two 48-foot tall angels sculpted by Marton Varo from Texas limestone grace the Grand Facade.

1. 'Grease’ is frothy, fun homage to the ’50sBy STEPHANIE ALLMON

sallmon@star-telegram.com

FORT WORTH — Hopelessly devoted fans of Grease won’t mind that headliner Taylor Hicks spends roughly four minutes onstage. Or that he doesn’t appear until almost two hours into the musical, in the middle of Act 2.

But Soul Patrol devotees might feel cheated. Hicks, who’s billed as the big star of the national tour of Grease presented by Casa Mañana that started Tuesday at Bass Hall, plays Teen Angel, who sings one song in the show — Beauty School Dropout.

But oh, what a cameo appearance it is: Decked out, Elvis-like, in a sequined suit, he descends from above a burger joint in an ice cream cone, then sings, hip-shakes and even blows his signature harmonica before heading back into "that malt shop in the sky." In a hilarious homage to, well, himself, Frenchy (a baby-voiced Kate Morgan Chadwick) declares to the 2006 American Idol champ dreamily, "I voted for you."
There’s a lot to like about this production of the beloved musical about high school friendships, jilted sweethearts, and all things cool in 1959. With its colorful set, frilly petticoats, upbeat choreography and live music by the "Grease Band," the show is one frothy, fizzy soda pop of energy.

Generally, the women in the cast outshine the men. Allie Schulz is stellar as the brassy Rizzo. And Erin Henry as the perky Patty Simcox will remind you how much you loved or loathed student council members.

But the leads, Eric Schneider as Danny Zuko and Emily Padgett as Sandy Dumbrowski, seem peculiar casting choices. Schneider just doesn’t give off that legendary Travolta-cool vibe; he seems sort of geeky. And Padgett’s exceptionally well-trained voice brought too much vibrato to some of her songs, including a Summer Nights that fell flat on the audience. Still, the two have sweet chemistry together, and Padgett sizzles as the "sexy Sandy" at the end.

Be sure to arrive early — you don’t want to miss Vince Fontaine’s (Dominic Fortuna) "warm-up act" that’ll have you singing and dancing along to some classic tunes.

Theater review: Casa Mañana's 'Grease' sizzles

11:29 AM CDT on Thursday, September 3, 2009

jtipping@dallasnews.com

FORT WORTH – American Idol winner Taylor Hicks is being touted as the star of the current tour of Grease, and he's fabulous in his one scene. But the real star is director-choreographer Kathleen Marshall's updated production, which brings both fizz and sizzle to a show we've all seen a million times, either at the movies or onstage.

Grease – which first debuted on Broadway in 1972 and has been revived twice, the last time in 2007 – was the anti-High School Musical before HSM even existed. The whole point of the show is the vicarious elation we feel when virginal Sandy turns party-girl wicked. With their smoking and drinking, fast cars and leather, these kids would utterly terrify the HSM gang, and Marshall makes the absolute most of all the naughty innuendo.

The cast for this tour, presented by Casa Mañana, is superb, with standout performances by Eric Schneider and Emily Padgett as Danny and Sandy, bolstered wonderfully by all the T-Birds and Pink Ladies in their respective cliques. Padgett, especially, has a beautifully sweet soprano that will soon chase any lingering thoughts of Olivia Newton-John from your mind.

This production is the first stage version to include songs from the 1978 movie version, including "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "You're the One That I Want." The original music holds up better, though, with particularly exuberant takes on "Greased Lightnin'," "Shakin' at the High School Hop" and "We Go Together."

"Born to Hand-Jive" remains a visual treat, and Brian Crum (as Doody) has a thrilling Act 1 showstopper with "Those Magic Changes." Also excellent are Allie Schulz as Rizzo, David Ruffin as Kenickie, Kate Morgan Chadwick as the hair- challenged Frenchy and Bridie Carroll as Jan.

As Teen Angel, who helps Frenchy through her beauty-school crisis, Hicks has the best entrance in the show, emerging from a gigantic ice-cream cone suspended above the stage, and the production even works in a couple of sly Idol references.
This is an amazingly well-oiled Grease. It's definitely the one that you want.

SOUL PATROL MEMORIES:

1. DipaHart:

just saw Grease...it was good and so was Taylor Hicks! Got to see him up close! Felt like we were at Idol!!!

2. AlexneedsJK: Taylor Hicks sang in Grease. The musical was awesome!

As audiences go, I would have liked to hear more enthusiasm - but the cast got standing ovations at the end and the crowd seemed engaged, laughing along and giving solid applause for these hard-working, talented kids.

After the show, we mosied on out to the balcony overlooking the lobby, thinking we'd have to wait a bit to see Taylor. But there he was, already signing and leaning across the table for pictures with everybody who wanted one. They had a huge line and the merch-chick was selling his CD out of the box in the crowd faster than she could pull them out. yea!!!

4. Shalie

After the show, they announced that Taylor would be signing CD's in the lobby. My first thought was, meh, that will be too hard and too long of a line, etc., etc., but we got out and somehow fell right into line, bought our CD's and he was signing them for us in a matter of a few minutes. I was completely shocked that it was so easy. I really don't think I have ever gotten an autograph by a celebrity or waited in line for anything like that so I really enjoyed the rush of doing it. I felt like a teenager again. :) We all got signed CD's and our picture with him and I have to say that he is super nice. Very normal, wanted to know exactly how to spell our names, and did not hesitate at all to pose for a picture. He seemed like he almost enjoyed it. I was completely impressed with him. Here are all of our pictures with him. I am SO SO glad that I threw my old, OLD small camera in my bag yesterday morning, although, this is the time I wish I had my big one! That's how it usually goes.

And to my surprise, Taylor Hicks (season 6 American Idol winner) was starring as the Teen Angel! He had an amazing voice and was perfect for the part (in my mind) because he loves to ham it up and get his groove on as he sings. After the performance was over we also had a mini Taylor Hicks showing as he sang a couple other Grease songs as well as a single from his new album. All in all, it was a great night!
