The grand opening of the Long Center took place on March 28, 2008. The Long Center is an important achievement for Austin. Its impact reaches well beyond providing space for arts organizations. It will help define the character of the Austin community for generations to come. The Long Center for the Performing Arts will be an important entertainment center for Central Texas. Its design, location, and generous early support combine to create an exciting cultural and economic resource for Austin. The Long Center will contribute to the economic future of Central Texas, playing a role in the recruitment of new corporations and employees to our area, revitalizing downtown, increasing tourism and educational opportunities, and further boosting Austin’s image as one of the nation’s “best cities.” Designed in the classic performance space tradition, the Michael & Susan Dell Hall is a grand concert hall seating 2,400. The Parterre, Mezzanine and Balcony levels wrap around the interior walls of the hall to form boxes at each level. A commitment to acoustic excellence places the Michael & Susan Dell Hall in a prestigious group of performing arts centers across the United States. Everyone really seemed to enjoy Taylor Hicks who was playing Teen Angel (in other words, he was the dude who sings "Beauty School Drop-Out" to Frenchie). I had never seen Grease live, and I love musicals, so I was all teary with happiness (really!). I'm a fan of the movie, but some things in the movie just didn't make sense to me (like why does Danny dance with ChaCha at the school dance and why are the T-Birds so mad at the rival gang?). The musical explained things better. The only bad thing? It still ended is still the same. Boooo. Why does Sandy have to get a make-over and start smoking for Danny to not be ashamed to be her boyfriend? I thought cheerleader Sandy was perfectly delightful. 2. valeah: Saw Grease with @lizzens. Taylor Hicks was Teen Angel. IT WAS PRETTY HILARIOUS. Outside at the long center before Grease w/Taylor Hicks courtesy of understandblue3. Jokes aside, Taylor Hicks doesn't have to worry about people getting his name wrong. Certainly, not in Austin, where the American Idol winner likes any excuse to make a stop. "It's one of my favorite cities in the world," he said. "Live music, great food, college town, college football atmosphere, and it has its own identity." Hicks is in Austin to continue his run as "Teen Angel" in the national tour of Grease. He says combining acting with singing is nerve-racking, but thinks the role is a perfect introduction to Broadway theater. "The Teen Angel role doesn't really stray too far from my personality, as is." The season five winner of American Idol is also promoting his new album The Distance. An appropriate name, when you consider this singer has lived life on the road for almost four years. "No address right now or not had an address since February of '05," Hicks lamented. The singer's travels are no secret to some fans. The contest winners crowded the KASE Studios for an up-close and personal performance. Margaret Reilly racked up many a mile following his summer tour. "Just within driving distance, I don't fly. There are some people who fly all over the country and go to his concerts, " she said. Patty Rardin cast some of the 63.4 million votes that helped Hicks win American Idol on May 24, 2006. "I wish he could have played for hours, but i know he's busy. It was awesome, awesome," she said after hearing Hicks sing three songs. Taylor Hicks will be starring as Teen Angel in the national tour of Grease at The Long Center in Austin through Sunday, October 18. He sings the single, Seven Mile Breakdown, from his new album, The Distance, during the encore.
