I am still too overwhelmed to write this in full, but I will try. This was without a doubt the BEST Taylor Hicsks show of all time! First of all, here is the complete set list: Here is the complete set list from Martyrs. 1. Soul Thing 2. Give Me Tonight 3. Heart and Soul 4. Heaven Knows/Maze 5. Compared to What 6. What's Right is Right 7. Gonna Move 8. Lowdown 9. The Deal 10. Womans Gotta Have It <correction...on original list but conflicting reports as to whether it was sung> 11. Runaround 12. Great tag of "Love Light." ENCORE: Naked in the Jungle Superstition Original Encore was supposed to be: The Right Place Badge OK...here goes. The opening band was awesome. They played til almost ten pm. The Taylor chant began, but eased off as people saw it would still be a while. We had gotten to Martyrs at 7 pm and so we got right up front. Taylor arrived and apparently went back to either rest or grab a bite to eat. At about 11:20, he literally EXPLODED onto the stage. We were right at his feet, which never stopped moving...lol. The pure Joy of being in a club again in his own show was evident in his huge grin and continued playfullness with the fans. He was at the top of his game, wild and crazy, and so into this that it swept you away instantly. Josh Smith and Brian Gallagher were there, and the rest of the band was new to me. All were amazing, especially the keyboard player. Taylor was in his element and the cast of "Grease" was in the house! We got cowbell, we got tamborine, we got harp, we got guitar...we got Taylor at his best ever! He wore bluejeans, black shirt and shiny jacket, brown snakeskin boots. He was looking and sounding the finest I've ever seen him. We were hoping for Sweet Home Chicago, but that didn't occur. When the fans yelled, he responded kidding back. It was so very good to see him so happy up there! Oh and the few who tried recording, especially during his performance of the single, got told by Taylor in the middle of the song to "Get That Camera Out of Here." You can bet not a single camera appeared after that. OK on to the single...AMAZING, STUPENDOUS, SOULFUL, OUTSTANDING, MOVING, SMOOTH AND SILKY...Did I leave any descriptives out? LOL...I was mesmermized by it and the way he sang it. He didn't announce that it was the single...just said let's try this song and see how you guys like it. We knew what was coming and it was WELL received and done to perfection. The atmosphere was small and intimate...no matter where you were, you could see and hear. Taylor's mic was center and Josh was next to him on our left, and then came Brian G. Keyboard on the right. Taylor's appreciation of this band was in abundance and he played and goofed with the keyboard player all night. It was excellent! I have really not seen Taylor so relaxed and smiley as he was tonight....everyone was remarking about it. After the show, he came out to the side door by the bar and greeted fans, so we were able to say hi and tell him how absolutely fantastic the show was. He smiled a lot and seemed genuinely pleased to hear how much everyone enjoyed this. This is what I can say....there were fans who had been to only a few shows and there were fans who had been to tons of show. EVERY PERSON IN THAT PLACE WAS FREAKIN BLOWN AWAY! I thank God for the privilege of being at this show and I thank Taylor for the time of my life! If this night had never ended, it would not be enough . |

Wow. I'm glad you had such a good time, Gypsee. Thank you for your glowing report. How was the turnout for the show? Was WRIR the only new album song presented? Edited by hdey, Jan 18 2009, 05:06 AM.

Wow, James Taylor ( rock ) or am I misinformed on "Woman's Gotta Have It"? Wouldn't have thought Taylor would do that . I would have given my opposable thumbs to have seen that show; well maybe not as I need them to use my hair dryer, but I am soooooooooooooo thrilled that Taylor was soooooooooooooooo thrilled and that the audience was soooooooooooo thrilled . Am soooooooooooo eager for the single and CD to be released. We've waited , what seems like sooooooooooooooo long for it. Thanks Gypsee for giving us sooooooooooooo much to read and smile about. |

Thanks so much, Gypsee, for the wonderful recap. Surprised he only did the one new song, but thrilled about the band and the set list. Compared to What? Oh, YEAH! Would you say the overall feel of the show was different than his solo tour? If so, in what ways? This is not exactly a quiz. I really only have one post? Oh, I am lame.

He played to a full house, only did one new song. Mouser, Woman Gotta Have it was on th setlist, and I am honestly trying to remember if he actually sang it. A lof of the night ran together for me, but what stands out was the reception he got and the excitement he generated. |

Thanks for your recap! I was there but I am back by the bar (still a great view). We go there around 8:15. The opening act was really good (but we wondered by they didn't play longer?) It was cool to see guys from that band stick around for Taylor. It was also weird to see Josh Smith walking around before Taylor came on. He was talking to guys from the opening act. When Taylor (as Gypsee said) exploded onto the stage the place want crazy! He sounded amazing and seemed to be so happy to be performing live! He at one point said that they were going to play longer than the bar probably wanted him to and that it would probably cost him some change. He gave everything he had to each and every song. The Grease cast and crew were by us and we curious to see him. In no time they were dancing (Frenchy) along with him. The lighting guy (who we were also by) said that his set list originally had him signing more for the second set including "The Right Place" and "Badge". He didn't know why they changed it up. He was brought in by Taylor to do the show and was also with him during him summer concerts in 2007. Caught a glimpse of Taylor by the kitchen door in a t-shirt after the show. He looked gorgeous! I have seen Taylor everytime he has come to Chicago and I also have to admit that this was just a different Taylor. Just thrilled to be there and doing his thing. I was told at one point not to take still photos. So I stopped. The guy who took tickets was walking around telling people to stop. I love every song. Especially "What's Right is Right". He seemed to love performing it! Heck I loved them all! As I watched him I thought man he must have really been stiffled on Idol but I am so glad he put up with it so I could eventually see him in all his glory! Can't wait for the next concert for the new album. By the way, I feel that $40 was a steal to see Taylor as Taylor was meant to be seen!! |

I bet the Grease cast was amazed. When I went back with everyone else to say hi to Taylor, I saw the guy who played Vince Fontaine. I said hi and he said....Cast Lady! LOLOL....I am never going to live that one down. He seemed really happy to be at this show. I surely hope NO PHOTOS OR ANY MEDIA show up on any site. A lot of those standing with us were watchful and many told people with cameras to stop. I do think some folks snuck some media, but hopefully not of the single. Taylor gave us a very special gift last night....to honor his wishes is a BIG way to say THANK YOU! |

The still photos I took are for me only. I don't even know how to transfer them anywhere. I actually saw alot of people taking pictures. I had the view from the back so I could see the crowd. I originally thought still photos were okay but like I said when the guy told me no pictures tonight then I stopped. There probably didn't want still photos as with today's cameras it is hard to tell whether you are taking a picture or video. I had a feeling someone would try to record his new song and am glad Taylor noticed and told them to stop. |

Todd Hembrook and the Hemispheres were great fun. Check them out here: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=45597729 They threw their tshirts out into the crowd....lol. Bill Will also threw a few water bottles out when he was placing them for the show. Taylor had tshirts for sale to the left of the stage, but he was so riverting, none of us wanted to leave our place to get one. I was so tired at the end, that I forgot about buying the one I wanted, the brown one with the stool. Oh and I got to try Chicago pizza....yummm! |

He seems by all accounts to be so happy to be back in his real element - and this is just the beginning of his road back to touring again - how exciting!! |
