First Reactions to New Single; Unofficial-but interesting!

Out of curiosity, I took my own unofficial poll today-first reactions from people on the single.

First-I recorded the snippet from Amazon on my small minicamcorder and "snuck" it in to work with me. Then, at random, I would ask my workmates, or vendors to listen to it and give me their reactions--good or bad. Initially I did not tell them it was Taylor-but just from knowing how I talk about him some of them figured it out-surprisingly when I asked them for their opinion-they gave it honestly!!!

My first "victim" was Mattie-our pricing clerk. She got in the groove on the first hook-closed her eyes and started swaying. She asked me if it was "you and your choir hooking up--that was smooth and spiritual"--I started laughing.
When I told her it was Taylor's new single-her eyes got so wide--"You're kidding? I knew he was cute but I didn't think he had THAT much soul!!" She spent the rest of the morning humming the hook.

Next was Jamie-stock crew. He listens to more "aggressive" music but knew it was Taylor and said "That's really good-for that style". (To Jamie-that meant it was good stuff!)

Then we move to Jay in produce-he laughed "Sounds like a commercial" which made ME laugh-when I told him about the prospective Hallmark marketing thing. He further said "Taylor can really groove man!!"

Several others came up with "That's pretty good-when's the single coming out?" which led to me giving them a wallet size pic of dreamhrts banner as a "reminder" about the CD.

Two bread vendors come in-Buddy and Don. Buddy is a redneck who likes Styx-and LOVES to flirt and hardly ever plays it straight with anybody. When HE heard it he thought and said "Hmm-sounds like some good old southern blues beer drinkin' music to me! Whoever it is has got some soul!!" When he found out it was Taylor his mouth dropped open so wide it covered his whole lanky face. (Buddy is ALWAYS teasing me about Taylor and teasingly saying he's gonna whup him next time he comes around)--and his reaction? Well, let's just say I can't print the words in polite company but it was all good. He didn't tease me any more the rest of the day!!

Don-the other "doughboy" is a talented singer in his own right and is a music expert like Taylor. I often discuss music aspects with him. He LOVES good blues harp music. He picked up the hook and put his OWN phrasing on it almost immediately-Just from hearing that little piece twice he almost had the lyrics down verbatim and SOUNDED GOOD singing it!! He riffed pretty well. He was very impressed and said it was traditional old school and classic-and "you can't go wrong with this stuff. I haven't heard anything that good in a while. I'd REALLY love to sit and talk music with Taylor sometime."

Chuck the Coke delivery guy commented that it was "really good" and said that he liked Taylor because "he's one of the few Idols constantly working and keeping himself out of trouble".

The WORST reaction I got from anyone is very ironic. A young beer delivery man stopped me in midplay and was backing away from it vehemently-saying "I love all kinds of music and if that's Taylor Hicks then I'm disappointed. He can do better. Its too old school and old fashioned"--and couldn't understand why I was laughing when he walked away to merchandise the order.

The final reaction you'll appreciate most of all. A vendor delivering dry ice is steeped in old school soul-well versed with Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, and all Taylor's favorites. His young son (a preteen) is also in love with these old songs. He knew it was Taylor, and said "My son's birthday is March 11. I'm gonna get this CD for him for his birthday"--then started humming the hook--asked me to play it again several times-with a light in his eyes that told me that he was hearing the best music he'd heard in a long time. When he left he told me "Now THAT's MUSIC!!"

Interesting day don't you think?

Just thought you guys would be interested in this. It WAS kinda fun-and if "He's too old fashioned" is the WORST comment-then I don't think our boy's doing too badly!! Thanks for reading!

Well OBG , that sure was impressive. I am thinking that those people would have been bopped on the head if they had said anything too criticial. LOL I am also thinking that most of what they said was heartfelt.

Thanks OBG, that was a fun fun read . You do good work !!!!!!

Don't know if it is the hook or not, but the single has something that I find melodically pleasing.

That was really fun to read, OBG! I'm very impressed with the reactions! I hope you "unofficial" pollis indicative of future reactions!!

Thanks for getting this! It's very cool to know "non-Taylor fan" reactions!
I am intrigued with the organ sounds...it reminds me of gospel...my first reaction was "gospel soul"....

Whatever it is, I like it!

Well since I work with these guys daily they all know me-so when I told them I wanted their opinions good or bad-I guess they took me seriously--and it ended up being an interesting little sidebar to an otherwise routine day.

Besides, the boss was away all day!!

Glad you guys are enjoying it!! I enjoyed doing it!
