There is a new activation system. To make it where you don't have to open firebug and refresh each time manually, right click the icon and hit "On for all web pages." Then, instead of using the close button (X) use the minimize button on any page. Just avoid hitting the close button and it will work like it used to.

I should note that when you open the browser you may have to repeat the process. I dunno, firebug 1.3 was so much better than 1.4, but 1.4 is the only compatible one that works with FF3.5
