It really bugs the shit out of me when you people say ZB is 'dying' just from a few minutes of clicking around. Brandon told me recently that registrations for ZB are actually doing rather well. Not all boards get added to the directory, and sadly the converted boards haven't been added just yet.

What a super attitude to take! :)
Go Nicolaaaaaaaaaaaa.

Rawr! :P

i actually think ZB is gaining alot more members than dying.

I agree and kind of disagree with Nic on this one. People shouldnt be so quick to judge.

A forum is like a business. If you do not give something to your members that is unique, they will leave it to find a bigger more active board. Considering the key factors in any business is either accessibility, quality, price, or uniqueness, what most forums can only achieve is uniqueness and quality.

Accessibility is nothing really, beyond the fact that you can see the forum when you're a guest, or not. Price... people don't sell stuff on a FREE forum board usually.

Uniqueness and quality. I was leading one of the biggest MechQuest (AE Game) fansite for a few months. I got the members, and I offered them things not even the AE Forums could. We had Guides that they didn't, Prizes they couldn't offer, an opportunity to become something that they surely couldn't offer. It's all about that. People need to be motivated to be on your forum.

Let's give a coding forum for a shot. If you start your own ZB Coding forum, you will probably not be successful. Why? Because there are forums like these that, unless you have better coders than them or more codes than them, you will most likely not turn out alright.

Why do you think newer games with a good leader that start a Guild quickly end up being the best? Well for one thing, they were the FIRST to bring that opportunity to the game. They were the first elitist group of people, therefore they have an upperhand on a matter of activity.

Some reasons forums die are that most people don't successfully use the "energy" involved with a new forum. If you can get 20 people to join your forum within the first week, those 20 people will be active as long as you keep the energy going. People who don't take that sense of energy in a new forum and mold it into activity quickly, will see those 20 people leave fast, and with it probably the only chance to make it active to begin with.

Another reason a forum dies is the advertisement of it. If you have no way to spread the word of your forum fast, it will probably die. You need some way to get the word out quickly and efficiently. Without this, your board will likely die.

This is all "likely," there are chances that something pops up, or a certain member gets on your board that can influence it greatly. But people don't treat a forum as a business, they treat it as a "fun" place to be or something. If you start off with that attitude you won't be determined enough to do anything to make your members motivated. The forum admin must not only find his motivation to keep things fresh and new on the board, but he must also find a reason for its member to stay on the board. If a member has no reason or motivation to stay there, then they will leave.

It's a simple (and complicated) as that.

There are a lot of things that are prettier in ZB, but there are things about IF that I just can't do without. So I'm afraid I'm not a fan yet.

However, regarding sites in general...

Lately I've found them to be more and more disorganized, lacking good leadership, and generally rude to new members. Perhaps when making a board was more difficult, only the truly dedicated made them. Now, it seems that everyone can put one up. Organization that resembles a labyrinth, broken links, and an unwelcoming membership are not conducive to keeping new members. Without new members, the board can die.

Let me give you just one example

I thought I might like to experience a Harry Potter rp site. It sounded like a nice diversion. I visited several and signed up and started to play. Yes, I made some mistakes and unintentionally broke some rules. Or, not understanding things, I would post questions in the section set up for that purpose.

Now, I'm 50 years old and I tend to be very polite when asking questions, but most of the time I received only rude and intolerant replies. Often I was told that I should have looked here or there to find the answer before asking. In a site with about 3 feet of Categories and Forums and subforums, "here" or "there" was not readily apparent to the new member. Suggestions for making it easier were attacked as attempts to "take over the board" The veteran members on the board played in their own clique and were not very willing to interact with newer members, leaving the new members to try to play by themselves.

One "feature" I think ZetaBoards lacks that InvisionFree has is being able to switch to other softwares.

I agree with you though. Many people these days aren't as open or caring to new members. There is a large negative attitude and cliques are becoming more and more apparent. That is hurting some forums, which is not good. :(
