Had to start it off that way. I LOVE that all guitar arrangement of Ozzy Osbourne's Mr. Crowley. Performed by Brasilian guitarist Oziel Filho aka Oziel Zinho.

Anyways, the point of this thread is my boredom... I'm bored and I love guitar.. So why not?

So, any one play guitar? I've been playing for a couple months off and on, not too serious yet. I just play for fun. I play by ear and when I cant figure it out or if its too complicated I user Tuxguitar. It's free and reads Guitarpro files so I like it.

I myself have a pretty crappy guitar right now lol But it was cheap and I wanted one. It's a First Act ME-502. I saw Slash playing one so it cant be too bad.

Songs I'm learning or play for fun:
Melodies of Life from Final Fantasy IX
Aeris' Theme from Final Fantasy VII
Remembrance Ballad by Atreyu
18 and Life by Skid Row
Paradise City and Sweet Child O Mine by Guns N Roses
Triptych (Only version I've seen is by Funtwo)
Search For Light by Eduardo Ardanuy

and the one I know/play most is Isabela. Composed and performed by Oziel Zinho

I've been playing guitar for around 4 and a half years now. I started on electric, but lately I've mostly been playing acoustic. I know a few full songs, but most of the time I just learn a riff or two.

I've written some stuff too, but nothing special really. Generally I spend most of my time just jamming with friends and stuff, not playing anything in particular.

Everything
I don't have a guitar, but I could think about getting one for Christmas. But I might choose acoustic. Mom said it's the best one to learn.
...Then I'll probably go onto electric.

Ah, perfect!

I want to learn to play:

So, I really want to learn to play the guitar. However, I have no clue on where to get started as far as what type of guitar to get. I want to learn to play the electric guitar and acoustic guitar. Is there a different though, unless of course you get like a 6-string versus a 12-string? Also, would learning how to play Bass be with it also? Is there a difference between an acoustic-electric guitar and an acoustic or electric? Sorry for the numerous questions. I figured this would be the second best place to look (music-specific place would obviously be better), but we have plenty of musicians here. Also, if you have taught yourself, is it hard? Thanks to anyone who answers! :)

^It's better to start off with acoustic because a) it will make it easier to learn the electric (since the string gauges are bigger, it allows you get used to proper fretting and everything) and b) it's cheaper so if you decide you don't want to keep up with it, you didn't just waste hundreds of dollars on gear.

Once you learn to play guitar, bass would be easier. But I wouldn't recommend trying to learn them both at the same time, that's just unnecessary.

An acoustic-electric guitar is just an acoustic guitar that plugs into an amp. For all practical purposes, it's a louder acoustic guitar. It's only really necessary for an acoustic guitarist who is going to gig.

Teaching yourself is hard, but if you're dedicated then it's definitely possible and it's certainly more rewarding!

Anyway, I'm self-taught and have been playing for seven years or so. My main guitar is a Fat Strat and my main amp is a Hot Rod Deluxe 212. I like playing both acoustic and electric, it really just depends on my mood. I occasionally will play along with a song I like, but I very rarely sit down to learn another artist's song. Most of the time I just fiddle around with my own stuff. It's definitely my favorite activity though. =]

Thanks! Any suggestions for good brands, say, under $500?

Going for an acoustic, one of the best pieces of advice I've ever been given is to check out a local brand of guitar. When you walk into a guitar store, it's very easy to walk in and pick up a Fender or Gibson because they're popular brands. The problem is though, that since they're already popular, they don't have to try as hard, so to speak. The local brands churn out top-quality instruments because it's the only way they can make a name for themselves. I have a local brand acoustic that cost less than $200 and it sounds just as good if not better than Fenders and Gibsons that cost more.

So I'd recommend going into the store and trying out a few different brands to see what feels right for you, but don't disregard a guitar because you're not familiar with the brand. That said, for beginner's acoustics, Takamine, Yamaha, and Washburn make some good instruments for a very reasonable price ($200 - $300). :)

That Isabella song is pretty sweet, nice Ibanez too. He plays a lot like Steve Vai, I bet thats who he looks up to in guitar. ( Seeing as he uses the Ibanez too )

I have been playing for around 2 years, I mostly play like Kevin.

My favorite songs to play are Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne and Nothing Else Matters - Metallica.

I also like playing Cannon D ( Rock Version )

I have a Dean Dimeback myself, its a pretty nice one. I don't really care too much for acoustic though.

I'd definitely agree with you on this one. I've got an acoustic guitar that's not local to me, but it's a Canadian brand. Cost me $450, but it sounds just as good if not better than anything else I've played that was way more expensive.

One thing I would suggest is going to a smaller shop if there's one near you, they're generally nicer, and willing to throw in some stuff if it's your first guitar and whatnot. When I bought my first (which was an electric), I paid for a guitar and an amp, and the guy gave me a cable, strap, 15 or so picks for free, which I doubt would have happened had I gone to the larger place that's near here. :) As long as they've got a guitar you like of course.
