GIF images will sometimes seem to be a lesser quality, or jagged because GIF file format cannot render semi-transparent pixels. Those are replaced from a similar color from a 256 color pallette, further lessening the smoothness of the rendered GIF image. JPG is generally the best file type for photographic images, and PNG for text/graphic images, but loses quality on each re-save. PNG is virtually loss-less and can support transparency, where as the JPG file format cannot. So to get a better quality on your image, save it as a PNG file If you are working with animations, you will have to use GIF file format for crossbrowser viewing. You can create animations in PNG, but they cannot be viewed by all browsers. You can view them the current version of FireFox3, however. To get the best quality on your GIF images, go to your preferences and choose the highest level of rendering. [Gimp 2.6: Edit > Preferences > Tool Options > Scaling: choose Cubic for most applications. ] Also use your feathering and antialiasing controls when creating your images. [I'm assuming you are a windows user...these are instructions related for that operating system] There is an installation guide in the download from photocomix site that will guide you through the windows installer steps. The bug-fix download is listed on the same page...2nd link in the quoted file below. I don't believe Gap 2.4 has been updated for 2.6 yet, but it will work with 2.6 for the most part . There is a bug fix file you can install to help it along. This read-me file may give you most of the information you are looking for:
