What if California had swung for Hughes in the 1916 United States Presidential Election? How would a Hughes Administration have handled the world situation in 1916? Might there be Progressive calls for reforming or abolishing the Electoral College due to Wilson losing the electoral vote while winning the popular vote by a large margin? |

He certainly could have won, given the relatively close results. I'd have to dig out more information on the party platform that year and Hughes' own positions to answer more thoroughly. The Electoral College would very likely remain as-is. One would have to wonder whether Roosevelt would try to exercise more influence in a Republican administration. Assuming the Germans reinitiated submarine attacks on schedule, there wouldn't really be time for a different lead-up with the Preparedness Movement. What would clearly be different is the postwar settlement and the League of Nations, if there were such a thing. |
