Could the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 have brought down the Chinese government, leading to liberalization in China and possibly reunification with Taiwan along the lines of what happened in Germany?

No, I can't see it happening. There wasn't the groundswell to back up the students as there was in East Germany.

In addition, the East German collapse was helped by the collapse of the wall, a result of a bureaucratic mistake.

Interestingly enough, the man responsible for the opening of the GDR's borders died today.

That's why the topic came up actually, Basil mentioned it to me, the fellow's death, and we got talking about it.

Pity. I should like to have seen the protests succeed, at any rate. What do you suppose would have happened to the political situation in China had they not been crushed? If they'd occurred later, would the events in Europe have had any impact?
