What are the implications of a surviving Imperial Iran? I'm thinking of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Saddam's rule and foreign policy, what direction the Shah would take Iran as it reaches near great power status, and wider implications for Israel, the Middle East, and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. |

Iran will not get near great power status. It will be a strong medium power, but caps out there. |

That's the qualifier near, but yes, a strong middle power would do. In terms of paper military strength it would be on par with or even stronger than some of the great powers, but it would be reliant on foreign suppliers and have a rather atypical resource base to draw on. It seems Imperial Iran would be somewhat akin to a stronger version of the RoK. |

I'd put it around the level of a Super Korea/unified Korea, but not a top level medium power such as Japan, Canada or Australia. The broad implications would be a military build up in reaction to Afghanistan, complete backing against Iraq, no Iran-Contra affair or hostage business and a recast Middle East. |
