The proclamation of the German Empire at Versailles is usually said to have followed the Prussian victory in 1871. However, Wilhelm I was crowned emperor on January 18; Paris was still under siege at the time and didn't surrender for another 10 days. The heaviest phase of the bombardment didn't even begin until a week later. This is very curious to me, even if most of the French armies had been defeated already. |
