I've been looking for a neutral biography of Douglas MacArthur for some time and was wondering if anyone can make some suggestions. He was a very controversial man, and historians tend to gravitate toward hagiography or vitriolic condemnation when assessing his life. Many fall in the latter category today.

I expect I know what Simon's opinion will be, as an Australian. ;)

Dont know any biographies. But I rate him just as high as I do Patton: very low.

MacArthur was a good shogun. His wartime record is rather less proud. I'll have a look through my sources.

Inchon worked pretty well.

Just my random statement-of-fact-without-qualifications-or-much-examination-for-the-day.

Inchon was a good victory, hard fought and difficult tactically, but it was a very straightforward option strategically.

Lots of people opposed it because it was too crazy from what I remember.

Combined naval-land operations seem to fascinate me. Dieppe, Inchon, Nelsons operations in the Mediterranean and Baltic (apparently his unused plans for Cronstadt were the ones modified for use in the '50s), Long Island, not to mention Normandy.

Apparently they are bringing combined operations in for the newest Rome Total War. Combined battles for the 1700-1820 period would be amazing... They included bomb vessels in both Empire and Napoleon but they were just more of a nuisance than anything as they only have sea battles and the bomb vessels would just sit around and try to set your rigging on fire.

Oh, apparently Nelson also was considering assaulting Cadiz and the combined fleet in 1805. Seems he thought rockets might do some damage.
