Firstly, what would be the consequences if it went decisively either way?

Secondly - and this is a long shot - has anyone else ever seen a film about this? I seem to remember very well a period drama featuring this argument being conducted and the final silent scene of a Negro slave sweeping the empty courtyard afterwards.

I think this was it: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0243192/

I spent my teenage years in very esoteric pursuits.

SepĂșlveda took a more secular approach than Las Casas, basing his arguments largely on Aristotle and the Humanist tradition to assert the Indians were naturally predisposed to slavery, and could be subjected to bondage or war if necessary.[1] Las Casas objected, arguing that Aristotle's definition of the "barbarian" and the natural slave did not apply to the Indians, who were fully capable of reason and should be brought to Christianity without force or coercion

Interestimg...

Its hard to say, I could see it going a lot more viciously, had the one fellow won who was arguing they should be enslaved. It is interesting to think the other way though, but I can't imagine it would convince any of the settlers to not defend themselves if they came under attack.
