April 10th - German troops march into Zagreb, Independent State of Croatia is formed. It is neither independent, nor a state, and it is hardly Croatian.

The darkest 4 years of our history begin.

April 21 - The Battle of San Jacinto (180 years)

One of the most important battles in American history and probably least well-known outside of certain areas.

They shall grow not old, as we who are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning
We will remember them.

May 28, 1991 (25 years) - formation of the Croatian National Guard, which will later be transformed into the Armed Forces of the Republic of Croatia (celebrated as the Armed Forces Day)

The day of the first parade of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Croatia is symbolically assumed to be the date of the formation of the modern armed forces of Croatia. On May 28, 1991, the (then still Socialist) Republic of Croatia presented forces separate of those of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, marking the end of second Yugoslavia.

One word: JUTLAND.
A colossal battle.

Pity there aren't many good naval simulators out there in that period.

On this day, 25 years ago:

Following the bombardment of Banski Dvori (then the official residence of the President of Croatia) by Yugoslav attack planes, the Croatian Parliament held a session in the basement of the INA building, the headquarters of the Croatian oil company.

There, the Croatian Parliament unanimously decided that, with the expiration of the Brioni Agreement, all ties between the Republic of Croatia and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia were null and void. Croatia declared its independence.

So, happy birthday Croatia!

The Story of the City

Posted Image

I refrain from my search for all the justice and truth, I refrain from all the attempts to let ideals arrange my personal life, I refrain from everything that until yesterday I considered essential for some good beginning or a happy end. I would even try to refrain from myself, but I cannot; for who will remain if we renounce ourselves and flee into our fears? Who will inherit the city? Who will guard it for me when I am gone, while I am searching in the ash heaps of the human spirit, while I am alone, staggering without myself, wounded, tired, feverish, while my eyes begin to wax before my personal defeat?

Who will guard my city, my friends, who will carry Vukovar from the dark? There aren't shoulders stronger than mine or yours - and therefore, if it isn't too much for you, if there still remains in you a youthful whisper, join us.

Somebody has ravaged my parks, the benches that still have your names carved into them, that shadow beneath which you gave and received your first kiss - somebody has simply stolen it all, for how do you explain that not even a Shadow remains? That store window in which you admired your personal joys is no more, that movie theater in which you saw the saddest film is gone; your past has been simply decimated - and now, you have nothing. You must build anew. First, you must find your roots, your past, and then your present, and then, if you still have the strength - invest it into the future.

Do not be alone in the future. Do not worry about the city, it has been with you all this time. Only hidden - so that the murderer cannot find it.

The city - it is you.

Siniša Glavašević (1960-1991)

The Fall of Vukovar - 11/18/1991

One of the saddest moments of Croatian history. May glory be theirs for eternity!

1848 – Franz Joseph became Emperor of Austria.

It seemed a good juxtaposition with the last post.
A young man who took upon his shoulders the weight of an Empire in a time of revolutions - and an Emperor who would finally find his eternal peace in a time of war.

One of the relatively recent developments in historiography I am most glad about is the reevaluation of the House of Habsburg in general, and Franz Joseph in particular. They were, at least previously, generally all described as inept inbreds whose rule often involved more luck than skill. Only in the last several years (especially due to the obvious interest in WWI) has that image begun to change.

Franz Joseph was a man who made many mistakes during his reign. But he was a man who solemnly and sincerely tried to do his best, and in the best interest of his country and his many peoples, and who was personally very affable, pious, honourable and modest. He had, throughout his reign, suffered terrible losses, both as a monarch and as a private person, and yet he endured all his sufferings; he kept on going because of his sense of duty, responsibility and faith.

In my opinion, his likeness is (or at least should be) an inspiration and a role model for every gentleman there is left today.

All I can say, or better put, quote, is the Croatian version of the Austro-Hungarian anthem, which ends with these verses:

[Oh God,] Make our happy days numerous,
And let us share them with the House of Habsburg;
Let its power be forever indivisible
From the glory of the Croatian crown!
