Today marks 30 years since Argentina invaded the Falklands.
I wish I knew more about this "splendid little war," since all I have heard is generic bits about the timeline and the cultural impact on Britain and Thatcher's government. |

There is quite a lot to learn and it is indeed a very interesting campaign. I've had the privilege of knowing a few blokes who served in the war and they have some very interesting stories to tell. I'd recommend 'An Ungentlemanly Act' as a film to see on the Argie invasion, 'The Falklands Play' on the diplomatic angle and the plethora of documentaries and shorts that are available on Youtube from British reporters. It was a war that saw a lot of interesting events - employment of modern anti ship missile spawning the rebirth of close in defence - the triumph of the Sea Harrier - the first ship to be sunk by an SSN - longest bombing raid in history to that point - the salvation of the RN's carrier and amphibious forces from planned cuts - Britain showing that it would respond to aggression and could do so victoriously at the other end of the earth |
