With a PoD no earlier than September 2, 1945, have Chiang Kai-Shek's Nationalists win the Chinese Civil War and consolidate control over China. Bonus points awarded if Mao flees to Taiwan and establishes a breakaway regime there. |

The main proposition is very difficult indeed, with only a slight chance of military success in the Northern Campaign for the KMT. It would be next to impossible for Mao to flee to Formosa, as that would require access to ports in Southern China as well as the acquiescence of the USN. |

Is it just plain hopeless? What about the absence of a Berlin Air Lift and greater U.S. focus on preserving the KMT through aid? |

It doesn't change the fundamental incompetence of the KMT command, the endemic corruption and the better image that the Communists had among a not insignificant section of the Chinese people. A larger US focus on aid will be matched by a larger Soviet focus on aid and the spoils of Manchuria. By the time that the nature of the postwar power relationship with the Soviets becomes apparent, it is too late to do anything in China. |
