What separate circumstances would lead to a situation with the following? - A single Virginia encompassing both West Virginia and Virginia - A single Carolina encompassing NC and SC - A single Dakota encompassing ND and SD |

I don't know off the top of my head, but one Dakota might have happened if the Democrats were in control of Congress at the time of admission. The Republicans admitted a bunch of states to bolster their power. But that could block admission altogether. Some other ideas: - New Mexico and Arizona as one state. Taylor considered this in the late 1840's. - Texas and New Mexico as one state (to the Rio Grande), with Arizona getting the rump. |

What about the reverse of this, whereby there are a few more American states? Would a division of Northern and Southern California be viable at some stage? If so, what would be the results? |

It's really a question of how many more you want. The premise is easy. |

I'll do a quick count of required state names.

Would be hard to divide California early. I think they insisted on keeping it together when they applied for statehood to control the gold deposits. If some means of detaching the south is found, it could conceivably result in a secession attempt during the Civil War. That would be interesting. |

Something in the 1880-1900 period is what I was thinking of. |
