Most attention is focused on the Templars, for reasons of their rather dramatic end and the myriad legends and conspiracy theories that have grown up around them. My personal thinking and opinion on the Templars and Hospitallers is in the main positive as they fulfilled a number of roles in Outremer and across Europe and were somewhat more ordered and disciplined than secular knights. The Hospitallers fought valiantly to defend their holdings against the Turks in later days. The Templars did play a role in commercial development with their banking systems. |
