What is the earliest possible date in non-ancient times that we could see a "United Kingdom" emerge in the British Isles? And, from that, the path to an early British Empire? For argument's sake I will define two essential features of the British Empire as being a robust Royal Navy and some overseas colonial presence, either in the Americas, Africa, or the Mediterranean. |

Why not just do the reverse in a sense, keep the personal union but give both countries some reason to actually take the next step earlier? It is difficult to say exactly what may do the trick, perhaps Cromwell merges them and then, like other things, they decide its just simpler to keep it that way? The reasons for the union, from my recollection, were largely due to the greater advancement of England and how the advantages of being tied to that would benefit Scotland. Perhaps more success in the wars vs Spain, more opportunities opened in India and the new world, faster economic expansion in England? Perhaps then an earlier defeat of the Dutch trading fleet meaning an earlier take over by English hulls? Earlier acquisitions in India? These are all sort of vague at the moment though.
