Ultimately it ends with an atomic bomb being created by the joint US-British-Canadian program in 1945, or if the United States does not enter in late 1941 / early 1942, the spring or summer of 1946. Although delayed, this is still ahead of the muddled German project and the nonexistent Soviet project, due to the greater suspicion toward Communists in the West and the inability of certain operatives to pass on nuclear information. However, much of London and SE England are flattened in the meantime by bomber and V-2 raids. Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich, Moscow, Leningrad, Stalingrad, Kiev, Vladivostok, and other major cities are destroyed by B-29 nuclear attacks in 1946 from bases in England and the Philippines. The Nazi-Soviet alliance suffers about 100 million dead and the loss of most of its industry and collapses. Within short order, every major nation left in the world is a democracy, and the United States is the sole remaining superpower. The world hails the possibility of a new golden age under freedom. By 1950-55, the democratic states of the West are back to squabbling amongst themselves again. Somewhere, Thucydides is seen shaking his head. |

If they try to use gas, they face a far greater threat than mere atomic annihilation - RAF anthrax attacks in a vastly scaled up Operation Vegetation. That will make areas uninhabitable for centuries, not just decades. Axis air defences wouldn't be able to cope with concentrated high altitude night attacks without huge changes in a number of areas. |
