Ontario Children's Aid Society: Investigating unethical spending by Jill Hopkins I must admit that I am totally appalled by recent allegations of questionable spending practices of employees of the Ontario Children's Aid Society. Apparently certain supervisors have been spending government funding on luxury vehicles and all expense paid vacations to exotic locations. And this money was earmarked to provide assistance to our most vulnerable and needy citizens - children whose parents either cannot or will not provide for them the necessities of life. For quite some time now, the ombudsman of Ontario has been lobbying to have the power to investigate and resolve complaints and criticism surrounding the children's aid society. All other provinces are regulated by the government in addition to being funded by it; Ontario's society however remains a private institution. Nonetheless, they are funded by both the federal and provincial government to the tune of billions of dollars a year. However, they answer to no-one and are accountable to no-one. I have a child with severe disabilities who I have placed voluntarily into the care of the Ontario Children's Aid Society. I did as much as i could for her and when the resources ran out or wait times were impossible to contend with, I turned to the society for help. So she lives there with visits home each weekend. She is doing well and we hope to have her home soon to remain. My issue (today) involves Halloween. My daughter and workers at her home informed me that there was no money in the budget for Halloween costumes for children residing in care. I not only sent her money to get a Halloween costume, I donated a box full of Halloween costumes and decorations from past years to be used by the other children in the group home. I really did not think it was that big an issue until these recent allegations of wrongful spending arose. In my opinion, Halloween is one of the big three; that is one of the celebrations during the year which children especially most look forward to participating in. But, now I am just curious as to how many Halloween costumes could have been purchased for the price of a Lexus SUV or an all-expense paid trip to Jamaica. The current procedure involves the Children's Aid Society investigating and resolving complaints against themselves. So, if anyone out there agrees with me that the ombudsman should have the power to investigate, resolve and discipline where a government funded organization falls short of the mark, please write a letter to your MPP. I can not imagine an organization getting funding from the government and other charitable institutions and are not regulated. This is the reason why I heard a lot of complains regarding the abuses commited by CCAS/CAS. I agree that the ombudsman should have the power to investigate, resolve and discipline where a government funded organization falls short of the mark. I will write to our MPP.
